Creatività, design, estetica ed etica, legati da un unico filo, quello della sperimentazione. È questo che ha portato Yair Neuman a fondare nel 2012 il suo studio e, in seguito, il suo progetto di moda: Wires Glasses. Occhiali da sole che, oltre a essere personalizzabili e dallo stile inedito, sono animati dal saper fare degli artigiani dello Zimbabwe e dalle tecniche all’avanguardia a disposizione del designer nel suo opificio londinese, luogo dal quale ci racconta come è nato Wires.
Creativity, design, aesthetics and ethics, linked by a single thread, that of experimentation. That is what led Yair Neuman in 2012 to found his own studio and, later, his fashion project: Wires Glasses. Sunglasses that, besides being customizable and unique, are animated by the know-how of the Zimbabwean artisans and the latest techniques available to the designer in his London factory, from where he tells us how it came Wires.
Yair, sei sempre stato in contatto con il mondo della moda e del design. Quale di questi due aspetti ti ha convinto a fondare Wires Glasses?
- Avevo semplicemente bisogno di un paio di occhiali da sole per il mio viaggio in Spagna. Questa necessità, mi ha portato a creare il primo paio di Wires: ho iniziato a sperimentare in studio, creando qualcosa di diverso rispetto a un paio di Ray Bans. -
Yair, you have always been in touch with the world of fashion and design. Which of these two aspects has convinced you to found Wires Glasses?
- It was a need for sunglasses that made me create the first pair of Wires. I just needed sunnies for my trip to Spain and it was more exciting to mock something up in the studio than go and by a pair of Ray Bans. -
Questo progetto si articola su due basi: connettere Londra con Harare (in Africa) e di unire il tuo stile con la particolare manifattura della capitale dello Zimbabwe. Come avviene questo processo?
- La particolare tecnica africana di lavorare e produrre i fili è la principale ispirazione che ha fatto nascere Wires, e ne è il principale elemento. Ogni montatura viene poi con parti in stampa 3D che creiamo qui a Londra, e per me è un’interessante combinazione tra ciò che è innovativo e ciò che appartiene alla tradizione. -
This project consists of two bases: connect London with Harare (in Africa) and to unite your style with the special manufactory of the capital of Zimbabwe. How does this process work?
- The special African craft of wire making was the inspiration for Wires and it's the main element in them. The frames are then completed with 3D printed parts we create in London and for me it's a valuable combination between old and new, traditional and cutting edge. -
Come sei venuto a conoscenza delle capacità dei locali?
- Qualche tempo dopo aver realizzato i primi disegni ho incontrato Jimmy Saruchera, che è oggi il mio business partner. Jimmy mi ha introdotto alle persone e alla cultura artigianale dello Zimbabwe, che ora lui gestisce direttamente in loco. -
How did you hear about the capacity of locals?
- Soon after I started developing the designs I met Jimmy Saruchera who is now my business partner. He introduced me to the local Zimbabwean craftsmanship and now manages the production there. -
Sul vostro sito, sottolineate l'importanza della qualità del lavoro che comprende un lavoro sicuro e un business etico. Come mai questa scelta in un mondo sempre più orientato al profitto facile e cieco?
- Non penso che noi, come società, abbiamo davvero necessità di avere un altro paio di occhiali. Così come sedie o lampade. Esistono già abbastanza prodotti di design nel mondo. Tuttavia, a Wires cerchiamo di focalizzarci sia sugli aspetti legati alla produzione che quelli legati al risultato finale: non è un progetto legato solo al design dell’occhiale o al profitto ma anche alle persone che vi lavorano e in quale modo lo fanno. -
On your website, you stress the importance of the quality of work that includes a secure job and an ethical business. Why this choice in a world increasingly oriented to the easy and blind profit?
- I don't really think we as a society need more sunglasses. Or chairs or lamps. There are enough great designs in the world. With Wires we're trying to focus on production aspects as much as we focus on the end result: it’s not only about the design and looks but the craft and people behind it. -

- Prima di tutto, Lily ha un grande intuito per i dettagli e gli aspetti estetici. Mi confronto spesso con lei su questi temi e lei è sempre in grado di darmi un feedback importante. Inoltre lei tiene molto agli aspetti riguardanti la filiera produttiva da intendersi come un processo corretto, trasparente ed etico. E questo è un altro obiettivo del brand. -

- Firstly, Lily has a great eye for detail and aesthetics. I consult with her on many design decisions and she provides valuable feedback. She is also very dedicated to turning supply chains fair, transparent and ethical which is our goal as a brand. -
