se fosse andata male sarebbe stato un segno del destino,
e sarei tornata indietro…
Sono tante le volte che abbiamo vissuto o sentito raccontare il cliché dell’innamoramento estivo. Tra le sue caratteristiche universali ci sono certamente la durata, piuttosto breve, e l’intensità. Di rado, infatti, una storia di qualche settimana trascorsa sulle dune dorate di una spiaggia, limitrofa o remota, porta con sé conseguenze anche nei mesi e negli anni successivi. Quella che Marta Lock scrive nel suo ultimo romanzo Dimenticando Santorini, va contro corrente, sfugge alle regole tacite di questo tipo di flirt.
There are so many times that we have lived or heard about the summer love clichés. Among its universal characteristics there is certainly the duration, rather short, and the intensity. Indeed, a story of a few weeks spent on the golden dunes of a nearby or remote beach brings with it consequences even in the months and years following. What Marta Lock writes in her latest novel Dimenticando Santorini, goes against current, escapes the tacit rules of this kind of flirt.
Jade e Damian, i protagonisti della storia, sono due giovani adolescenti che conoscono la passione reciproca in una delle isole più conosciute della Grecia: Santorini. Lei, americana, vede in lui la via di fuga da una vita passata ad assecondare la famiglia, ma anche da se stessa, da quella sua continua passività nei confronti di tutto e tutti. Questa voglia di scappare, però, viene disillusa quando è lei stessa ad annunciare al ragazzo di dover andare via, di tornare negli Stati Uniti. La vacanza è finita. Il distacco è duro, traumatico, ma l’ultima opera della scrittrice originaria di Terni fa incontrare nuovamente, anni dopo, i due: finalmente Jade reagisce e torna in quel luogo colmo di bei ricordi.
No, questo non è il finale. Lock, abile nel gestire l’intreccio, fa incontrare alle due anime, che nel frattempo si erano create una vita loro, pur ricordando senza sosta il loro passato comune, il destino. Questa entità li unisce, ma li separa nuovamente, è infatti il loro antagonista. Perché? Cosa devono dirsi che ancora non hanno osato esprimere? Dimenticando Santorini continua in questo modo fino al termine, quando qualcosa avviene, e in modo definitivo.
Jade and Damian, the protagonists of this story, are two young teenagers who know each other's passion in one of Greece's most famous islands: Santorini. She, American, sees in him the way of escape from a lifetime spent supporting the family, but also by herself, from her continuing passivity towards everything and everyone. This desire to escape, however, is disillusioned when herself is announcing to the boy that she has to go away, to return to the United States. The holiday is finished. The detachment is hard, traumatic, but the last work of the writer from Terni makes see them again, years later: Jade finally reacts and returns to that place full of good memories.
No, this is not the end. Lock, skilled in handling the weave, meets the two souls, who in the meantime have created their own life, while still remembering their common past, fate. This entity unites them, but separates them again, it is their antagonist. Why? What should they say they have not yet dared to express? Dimenticando Santorini continues in this way until it’s over, when something happens, and definitively.
Marta Lock ritorna in libreria con un volume meno complesso rispetto agli altri livres de voyages come Notte Tunisina, la sua opera prima pubblicata del 2011, e Ritrovarsi a Parigi del 2013. In questo caso, infatti, il lettore può riconoscersi più facilmente tra gli eventi raccontati, o perché li ha vissuti in prima persona, o perché il contesto rientra a pieno nel nostro immaginario comune, almeno all’inizio. Il romanzo, edito da Talos Edizioni, è dunque un’opera che si presta a essere letta (o vissuta) in questa stagione, magari proprio su un’isola dell’arcipelago greco. - Le pagine sono animate da una scrittura chiara, nitida e lineare -, scrive Massimo Pedroni, critico letterario, che ha curato la prefazione. Ed è così, come tutti i romanzi di Lock. E questo in qualche misura aiuta il filo del racconto a rinnovarsi fino alla fine, in antitesi con la storia di Jade e Damian, per nulla semplice, nitida.
Tranne l’aspetto dell’amore, che, come sempre, è lì, e non va via, neanche quando a separarlo sono miglia di distanza.
Marta Lock returns to the library with a volume lesser complicated than the other livres de voyages like Notte Tunisina, her first work published in 2011, and Ritrovarsi a Parigi in 2013. In this case, the reader can recognize him-herself more easily between the events reported, or because has lived them in first person, or because the context falls full into our common imagination, at least in the beginning. The novel, edited by Talos Edizioni, is therefore a work that can be read (or lived) this season, perhaps right on an island in the Greek archipelago. - The pages are animated by clear, sharp and straightforward writing -, writes Massimo Pedroni, literary critic, who edited the preface. And they are, like all the Lock novels. And this to some extent helps the thread of the story to renew itself until the end, in opposition to the story of Jade and Damian, for nothing simple or sharp.
Except for the look of love, which, as always, is there, and does not go away, even when separating it are miles away.
