Maurizio, hai studiato ingegneria informatica a Torino dopo un’infanzia e un’adolescenza trascorse sull’isola di Favignana in Sicilia. Dove e come nasce la tua passione per l’arte visiva in generale, e quella fotografica in particolare, in questo arco di tempo?
- In famiglia siamo sempre stati dei creativi: mio nonno era un pittore, mio padre ha sempre cercato di essere ingegnoso in tutti i suoi lavori. Da piccolo ammiravo con quanta passione ricercasse l'armonia nelle sue composizioni, dal sistemare il giardino piuttosto che riparare una tettoia. La ricerca di equilibrio sotto forma di luce e colori oggi sono il fulcro dei miei lavori. -
Maurizio, you studied informatics engineering in Turin after a childhood and adolescence spent on the island of Favignana in Sicily. Where and how did your passion for visual art in general, and that of photography in particular, arise in this period of time?
- In the family we have always been creative: my grandfather was a painter, my father always tried to be ingenious in all his works. As a child, I admired how much passion he sought for harmony in his compositions, from arranging the garden rather than repairing a shed. The search for balance in the form of light and colors today is the fulcrum of my work. -

Qual è, se c’è, l’obiettivo del tuo fotografare?
- Trasmettere un sincero stato d'animo. Spero che chi guarda i miei lavori possa percepire un'emozione reale, molto probabilmente una sua interpretazione di ciò che rappresento, perché la interpreterà in relazione al proprio stato d'animo. Il mio obiettivo è fornire un'anima alla foto, affinché lo scatto "viva" dentro l'osservatore. -
What is the objective of your photography if it is there?
- Transmit a sincere mood. I hope that those who look at my work can perceive a real emotion, most likely an interpretation of what I represent, because he or she will interpret it in relation to their mood. My goal is to provide a soul to the photo, so that the shot "lives" inside the observer. -
Studiando le tue foto, vengo colpita dall’intensità dello sguardo che esprimono i tuoi soggetti. Quanto conta l’aspetto scenografico quando ti appresti a scattare?
- Di solito gioco molto sul legame che hanno soggetto e ambiente. Il mio lavoro spesso coincide nel dare un ruolo alla protagonista creando comunicazione con ciò che la circonda. Solo quando l’entità umana abbatte questa barriera e diviene parte dell'ambiente, allora posso trasmettere, tramite lo scatto, un'emozione sincera. Spesso discuto con il soggetto, cercando di allineare il mio pensiero con il suo e dare una nostra identità all'ambiente che ci circonda. Solo quando entrambi pensiamo allo stesso modo possiamo trasmettere un messaggio unico. -
By studying your photos, I get struck by the intensity of the gaze that expresses your subjects. How important is the scenic aspect when you are about to shoot?
- I usually play a lot on the bond they have subject and environment. My work often coincides with giving a role to the protagonist by creating communication with what surrounds her. Only when the human entity breaks this barrier and becomes part of the environment, then I can convey, through the shot, a sincere emotion. I often talk to the subject, trying to align my thoughts with her and give our identity to the environment around us. Only when we both think the same way we can convey a unique message. -

Oltre alla vista allora, è possibile esperire un contatto con la natura. Come avviene la scelta del luogo in cui vai a fotografare?
- Di solito è molto casuale. Mi piace molto improvvisare e lasciarmi trasportare da ciò che mi circonda. Altre volte avviene semplicemente durante una camminata con la modella. -
In addition to the view, you can experience a touch of nature. How do you choose where you are going to take pictures?
- It's usually very random. I like to improvise and let me carry it out of what surrounds me. Other times it is simply done during a walk with the model. -

Ci sono dei maestri che ti hanno ispirato, e se sì, in quale aspetto del tuo lavoro è possibile riconoscerli?
- Sicuramente Alessio Albi e Marta Bevacqua. Hanno svolto un ruolo molto importante nella mia formazione facendomi capire quanto forte può essere lo strumento della fotografia, soprattutto nel modo di trasmettere un'emozione, lavorando con scenario e modella. -
Are there masters that inspired you, and if so, in what aspect of your work can we recognize them?
- Definitely Alessio Albi and Marta Bevacqua. They have played a very important role in my training, making me understand how strong the photo tool can be, especially in the way of transmitting an emotion, working with the scenery and the model. -

Hai in programma delle mostre o stai lavorando ad altri progetti?
- Attualmente non ho in programma mostre. Seguo altri progetti, in particolare mi occupo della direzione artistica di un videogioco in realtà virtuale, “Singularity Project”, che mi permette di esprimere la mia creatività ricreando interi scenari e dando un peso diverso alla narrazione sotto forma di luce e colori. -
Are you planning on exhibitions or are you working on other projects?
- I do not currently have exhibitions. I follow other projects, in particular I am concerned with the artistic direction of a truly virtual video game, "Singularity Project", which allows me to express my creativity by recreating whole scenarios and giving a different weight to narrative in the form of light and colors. -
