È il nodo che lega il passato e il presente di Bianca Cappello, storica del gioiello nonché curatrice di mostre sul tema, e scrittrice di volumi e saggi riguardanti i protagonisti di un settore, tornato oggi in voga, benché ancora all’interno di una nicchia di amatori e intenditori professionisti.

Dopo il volume Storia della Bigiotteria Italiana (Skira), Cappello è in libreria con un nuovo lavoro Il Gioiello nel Sistema Moda (Skira). In questa conversazione, avvenuta qualche tempo fa in centro a Milano, vicino ai navigli milanesi, sede nota per essere ancora oggi luogo di aggregazione di artisti, anche del settore in cui è specializzata la curatrice toscana, racconta della nuova fatica editoriale e di molto altro, come delle nuove tecniche usate per la realizzazione dei gioielli o la messa in chiaro di cosa sia un bijou rispetto a un gioiello.

From Florence to Milan, accompanied by a passion for jewels and bijoux. It is the knot that binds the past and present of Bianca Cappello, a jewel historian as a curator of exhibitions on the subject, and writer of volumes and essays on the protagonists of a sector, which has come back into fashion today, although still within a niche of professional amateurs and connoisseurs.

After the volume Storia della Bigiotteria Italiana (Skira), Cappello is in the bookstore with a new work Il Gioiello nel Sistema Moda (Skira). In this conversation, which took place some time ago in the center of Milan, near the Milanese navigli, a well-known place to still be a gathering place for artists, including the sector in which the Tuscan curator is specialized, tells of the new editorial effort and much more, like new techniques used for creating jewels or making it clear what a jewelry is like compared to a bijou.

Bianca, quando si è sviluppata la tua passione per il mondo del gioiello?

- Sin da piccola. Mio zio era disegnatore di gioielli. Ricordo che con lui mi divertivo a realizzare dei monili aventi come base la creta, dunque non li avrebbe potuti indossare nessuno per via del loro peso, ma a noi non importava, era un gioco interessante, per tenere occupata una bambina, e un bel momento passato con lui. Nonostante l’aspetto ludico, è proprio da questa esperienza che ho compreso, ovviamente a posteriori, come il gioiello fosse un oggetto concreto, che si fa. A Firenze, durante il liceo classico, ho avuto la fortuna di avere come professoressa una persona che mi ha condotto agli studi di storia dell’arte. Grazie a lei ho imparato a osservare le opere e a comprendere, attraverso di esse, il quotidiano e i dettagli d’uso comune, tra cui, appunto, i gioielli che ho scoperto essere parte integrante della società, tanto da essere rappresentati nelle opere che analizzavamo, dove venivano indossati dalle veneri callopige della preistoria come nelle raffigurazioni più attuali. -

Bianca, when did your passion for the world of jewelry develop?

- Since I was young. My uncle was a jewelry designer. I remember that with him I used to make some jewelry based on clay, so nobody could wear them because of their weight, but we did not care, it was an interesting game, to keep a young girl busy, and a beautiful moment passed with him. Despite the playful aspect, it is from this experience that I understood, obviously afterwards, how the jewel was a concrete object, which one does. In Florence, during the high school, I was lucky enough to have as a teacher a person who led me to study art history. Thanks to her I learned to observe the works and to understand, through them, the everyday and the details of common use, including, precisely, the jewels that I discovered to be an integral part of society, so as to be represented in the works we analyzed, where they were worn by the callopige venus of prehistory as in the most current depictions. -

Riterrei parte della quotidianità anche i gioielli da indossare durante le occasioni molto importanti; li trovo anch’essi degli oggetti facenti parte della storia personale di una donna o, perché no, di un uomo.

Sei d’accordo?

- Assolutamente sì. È interessante la tua riflessione perché di fatto i ritratti che noi possediamo attraverso la storia rappresentano certamente il soggetto protagonista in un momento speciale, però, allo stesso tempo, ricordiamoci anche quanto l’abito e gli accessori abbinati fossero importanti indicatori della classe sociale di chi li indossava. Anche coloro che appartenevano alle classi più agiate non avevano molti vestiti e monili, e sicuramente non li indossavano tutti insieme, eccezion fatta quando venivano, appunto, raffigurati su tele o sculture: in questi casi si abbellivano di tutte le gemme in loro possesso e si poteva comprendere il loro status; nei secoli dove le carte d’identità come le conosciamo noi oggi non esistevano, il gioiello aiuta a capire il rango di appartenenza delle persone. -

I would consider part of everyday life also the jewels to wear during very important occasions; I also find them objects belonging to a woman's personal history or, why not, to a man.

Do you agree?

- Absolutely yes. Your reflection is interesting because in fact the portraits that we possess through history certainly represent the protagonist subject in a special moment, but at the same time, let us also remember how the dress and the matching accessories were important indicators of the social class of those who he wore them. Even those who belonged to the wealthier classes did not have many clothes and jewels, and certainly they did not wear them all together, except when they were depicted on canvas or sculptures: in these cases they embellished all the gems in their possession and we could understand their status; in the centuries where the identity cards as we know them today did not exist, jewel helps to understand the rank of belonging of the people. -

Moda e preziosi. Skira ha pubblicato di recente il tuo libro Il Gioiello nel Sistema Moda: qual è stata la sua genesi e quali sono le evoluzioni fino a oggi di questo rapporto?

- Il volume è nato da un’esigenza di fare chiarezza rispetto al settore del monile creato per i brand di abbigliamento, molto forte negli anni Ottanta. Successivamente, la crisi economica ha portato i creatori di moda a concentrarsi su ciò che per loro era essenziale per sopravvivere, ovvero i vestiti, lasciando in disparte gli accessori . Ora, a distanza di quasi quarant’anni, sono tornati in auge sulle passerelle, e tra i giovani, i quali, attirati dalle immagini che vedono, decidono di iscriversi a dei corsi o delle scuole orafe, come la Galdus e l' IED di Milano, dove insegno. Da qui, mi sono accorta che al rinnovato aumentare dell’interesse non corrisponde un’offerta libraria fruibile: non esiste, cioè, una manualistica facilmente reperibile sull’argomento. Queste sono le motivazioni che mi hanno portata a redigere il libro, la cui funzione vuole essere anche quella di chiarificatore di alcuni termini che spesso vengono utilizzati a sproposito, anche dai professionisti del settore, perché non se ne conosce il vero significato. -

Fashion and precious. Skira has recently published your book Il Gioiello nel Sistema Moda: what was its genesis and what are the evolutions to date of this relationship?

- The volume was born from a need to clarify the industry of jewelry created for clothing brands, very strong in the Eighties. Subsequently, the economic crisis has led fashion designers to focus on what for them was essential to survive, that is clothes, leaving aside accessories. Now, after almost forty years, they are back in vogue on the catwalks, and among the young people, who, attracted by the images they see, decide to enroll in courses or goldsmith schools, like Galdus and IED in Milan, where I teach . From here, I realized that the renewed increase in interest does not correspond to a usable book offer: there is no manual that can easily be found about this subject. These are the reasons that led me to write the book, whose function is also to clarify some terms that are often used inappropriately, even by professionals, because it is not known the true meaning. -

Qual è, allora, la relazione che intercorre oggi tra le case di moda e il mondo gioiello?

- Ho notato un grande ritorno a un apprezzamento nei confronti della figura dell’artigiano, dell’ orafo, dei piccoli laboratori, in cui si produce tutto a mano. Un esempio tra tutti, Domenico Dolce e Stefano Gabbana sono andati a recuperare un laboratorio storico fiorentino che produce bijoux realizzati in micro-mosaico, arte che si è quasi persa ultimamente, nella realizzazione dei loro orecchini per la collezione bizantina di qualche stagione fa. Pensa che Firenze una volta viveva di questo tipo di produzioni. -

What is, then,the relationship between today's fashion houses and the jewel world?

- I noticed a great return to an appreciation towards the figure of the artisan, goldsmith, small workshops, where everything is produced by hand. An example of all, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana went to recover an historic Florentine laboratory that produces bijoux made in micro-mosaic, art that has almost been lost lately, in the making of their earrings for the Byzantine collection of some seasons ago. Think that Florence once lived on this type of production. -

Per fare un po’ di chiarezza, che differenza c’è tra il bijou e il gioiello? Perché io stessa ho intervistato artigiani, soprattutto giovani, i quali lavorano a mano monili realizzati con materiali poveri che, però, proprio per la difficoltà nella lavorazione e il tempo dedicato al singolo pezzo, ritengo si possano considerare dei gioielli. Dunque, qual è il vero elemento che li divide?

- Hai ragione. Devi immaginarti la parola gioiello come una grande stanza costituita da armadi imponenti, dove all’interno abbiamo molte discordanze: quando parliamo di gioiello prezioso dobbiamo dimenticarci, soprattutto oggi, che questo vocabolo faccia riferimento a un valore materiale. Quello che rende di pregio un monile è il suo essere semioforo (portatore di significato, ndr). Tale elemento lo troviamo nel design, nell’esperienza che il singolo fa indossandolo, o nel valore - anche sociale - che gli si dà, come accade per un anello di fidanzamento, ad esempio. Per tali motivi i preziosi hanno una vita più lunga rispetto ai bijoux: seguono le mode ma non le subiscono, non perché “superiori”, ma perché portatori non solo di un valore estetico ma anche personale. La bigiotteria è invece un genere commerciale, in cui necessariamente il valore materico e di costo devono essere bassi. Ecco perché questa pratica la si lega molto alla moda: spesso viene seguita una stagionalità, si presentano le nuove collezioni; è un accessorio, al pari di un profumo, una scarpa o una borsa, sostituibile continuamente. Non è istituzionale come un prezioso. C’è da dire, tuttavia, che il mondo dei bijoux è molto sfaccettato e ricco di maestri che ne sono protagonisti, come Carlo Zini (su cui la storica ha scritto il libro Grandi Bigiottieri Italiani: Carlo Zini, edito da Universitas Studiorum, ndr), il quale ama definirsi un “bigiottiere”, o Donatella Pellini, che ha due linee, una più pop e l’altra più ricercata, anche se entrambe sono accomunata da un’estetica inimitabile e molto personale. Donatella fa una grandissima selezione di materiali e possiede una grande capacità: quella di mettere insieme forme e colori in modo unico, portata avanti attraverso lo studio di carte e materiali da inserire nelle sue resine. -

Speaking of clarity, what is the difference between a bijou and a jewel? Because I myself have interviewed artisans, especially young people, who work hand-made jewelry made of poor materials that, however, because of the difficulty in processing and the time dedicated to the single piece, I think we can consider jewels. So, what is the real element that divides them?

- You are right. You have to imagine the word jewel as a large room made up of impressive wardrobes, where we have many discord within: when we talk about precious jewelry we must forget, especially today, that this word refers to a material value. What makes a jewel valuable is its being a bearer of meaning. We find this element in the design, in the experience that the individual makes wearing it, or in the value - even social - that is given to it, as happens for an engagement ring, for example. For these reasons, the jewels have a longer life than the bijoux: they follow fashions but do not suffer them, not because they are "superior", but because they are not just aesthetic but also personal. The bijou system is instead a commercial genre, in which the material value and cost must necessarily be low. This is why this practice is very linked to fashion: often a seasonality is followed, new collections are presented; it is an accessory, like a perfume, a shoe or a bag, replaceable continuously. It is not institutional as a precious. It must be said, however, that the world of bijoux is very multifaceted and full of masters who are protagonists, as Carlo Zini (on who she wrote the book Grandi Bigiottieri Italiani: Carlo Zini, published by Universitas Studiorum, en), who likes to call himself a "bigiottiere", or Donatella Pellini, which has two lines, a more pop and the other more sought after, even if both are united by an inimitable and very personal aesthetic. Donatella makes a great selection of materials and has a great capacity: that of combining shapes and colors in a unique way, carried forward through the study of papers and materials to be included in her resins. -

Chi vedi tra i giovani più promettenti?

- Il panorama è molto complesso. Possiamo dire che esiste una dualità: ci sono tanti giovani che se da una parte fanno fatica a emergere - anche a causa di internet, il cui tratto democratico di offrire a tutti la possibilità di farsi conoscere è anche l’aspetto che penalizza di più - dall’altra sperimentano molto, sia con l’ausilio di materiali considerati vetusti, come le filigrane, che utilizzando strumenti all’avanguardia, come le stampanti 3d. L’inglese Sarah Angold, ad esempio, esegue oggetti molto belli e interessanti lavorando il plexiglas, specchi, stampe e colori, in linea con quella che è anche la moda contemporanea. -

Who do you see among the most promising young people?

- The landscape is very complex. We can say that there is a duality: there are many young people who on one side are struggling to emerge - also because of the Internet, whose democratic trait to offer everyone the opportunity to be known is also the aspect that penalizes more - on the other, they experiment a lot, both with the help of materials considered ancient, such as watermarks, and using cutting-edge tools, such as 3d printers. The English artist Sarah Angold, for example, makes very beautiful and interesting objects working on Plexiglas, mirrors, prints and colors, in line with what is also contemporary fashion. -

Progetti per il futuro?

- Sta per uscire un altro mio libro Carta Preziosa: Il Design del Gioiello di Carta, in collaborazione con Comieco il Consorzio Nazionale di Recupero e Riciclo degli Imballaggi a base Cellulosica, sempre edito da Skira. Uno scritto che coniuga la parte storica e critica della manipolazione della carta accanto a quella dei gioielli realizzati con questo materiale, a partire dagli anni Sessanta per arrivare a oggi, andando a definire le principali tecniche di lavorazione, antiche e contemporanee. Ma è anche un libro d’artista, uno scrigno, di gioielli preziosi perché si tratta di carta completamente riciclata secondo metodi ad alta sostenibilità, colorata in pasta con tinte naturali - a proposito di tutto quello che abbiamo detto fino adesso - e perché sono stati chiamati ventuno artisti della cellulosa provenienti da tutto il mondo, i quali hanno progettato ad hoc un vero e proprio gioiello, estraibile e dunque indossabile. -

Plans for the future?

- Another book of mine, Carta Preziosa: Il Design del Gioiello di Carta, is about to be released, in collaboration with Comieco, the National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose based Packaging, also published by Skira. A writing that combines the historical and critical part of the manipulation of paper alongside that of the jewels made with this material, starting from the Sixties to get to today, going to define the main processing techniques, ancient and contemporary. But it is also an artist's book, a treasure chest, of precious jewels because it is completely recycled paper according to highly sustainable methods, colored in paste with natural dyes - about everything we have said so far - and beacuse they have been called twenty-one cellulose artists from all over the world, who have designed ad hoc a real jewel, removable and therefore wearable. -
