Julia Buruleva
Dalla Russia all'Europa, attraversando San Pietroburgo, Mosca e, infine Barcellona. È nella città spagnola che la fotografa Julia Buruleva realizza la sua arte, il suo concetto di fotografia. E lo fa attraverso un processo solo in apparenza articolato, perché ricco di riferimenti culturali, soprattutto pittorici, e vita quotidiana. Il risultato invece è nitido, chiaro. Sensuale e sapientemente concepito. Un mix vincente che la porta da fotografa di matrimonio a divenire una delle fotografe di moda concettuali più importanti del momento.
From Russia to Europe, passing through San Pietroburgo, Moscow and finally Barcelona. It is in the Spanish city that photographer Julia Buruleva realizes her art, her concept of photography. And she does it through a process that is only apparently articulated, because it is rich in cultural references, especially pictorial, and daily life. The result, on the other hand, is sharp, clear. Sensual and expertly conceived. A winning mix that leads her from wedding photographer to becoming one of the most important conceptual fashion photographers of the moment.
Julia quando è avvenuto il tuo primo incontro con la fotografia?
- È stato molto tempo fa, dopo la scuola mi sono presa un anno sabbatico e ho deciso di seguire il corso di fotografia solo per passare il tempo e imparare qualcosa di nuovo. Non è stata una decisione presa con cognizione di causa; ma da un semplice divertimento è diventato, alla fine, qualcosa che ho adorato. Non c'erano ancora le fotocamere digitali e abbiamo imparato a lavorare con le pellicole in bianco e nero e le fotocamere manuali della vecchia scuola. -
Julia when was your first encounter with photography?
- It was really long time ago, after school I had a free year and decided to get the photography course just to spend my time and learn something new. It wasn't like really deliberate decision, something just for fun, but finally I loved it. There were not digital cameras yet and we learned to work with the black and white films and old school manual cameras. -

In effetti eri molto giovane quando ti sei laureato alla Saint Petersburg University of Art and Culture come artista e fotografa. Poi hai deciso di trasferirti a Barcellona. Perché?
- In primis mi sono trasferita a Mosca e ho lavorato lì come ritrattista e fotografa di matrimoni per circa 13 anni. E poi, quando ho capito che non potevo realmente esprimermi in quel settore, perché ho così tante idee che non posso incarnarle in questo genere molto limitato come la fotografia di matrimonio, ho deciso di cambiare totalmente la mia vita e trasferirmi in Europa e non scattare mai più così. Ho iniziato nella moda e nel campo dell’arte concettuale. Per me è stato molto importante prendere questa decisione. Ero nella Top-10 dei fotografi di matrimonio in Russia, molto ben pagata, ma ho deciso ugualmente di iniziare da capo, in una nuova città. -
In fact you were very young since you degree in Saint Petersburg University of Art and Culture as a fine art photographer. But then you decided to move to Barcelona. Why?
- Firstly I moved to Moscow and worked there as a portrait and wedding photographer for around 13 years. And then, when I realized that I can not express myself in this area, because I have so many ideas and can not incarnate them in this very limited genre as wedding photography, I decided to changed my life totally and move to Europe and never shoot weddings anymore but start to work in fashion, conceptual and art. For me it was very important to make this decision. I was in Top-10 wedding photographers in Russia, very well paid, but I decided to start from zero in the new place. -
I tuoi lavori sono un mix di moda e fotografia concettuale. Come crei un set e, prima di tutto, come costruisci la storia che vuoi rappresentare nella tua mente?
- Tutto ciò che ho attorno può ispirarmi in ogni momento. Ad esempio, sono stato all'Opera di Barcellona e ho ammirato queste bellissime poltrone rosse e alcuni dipinti in oro e blu sul soffitto. In quel momento tutti questi elementi, i colori e le sedie, hanno preso forma nella mia mente ma in un contesto diverso, sulla spiaggia, con la sabbia dorata e il cielo blu. Non ho scelto attrici o cantanti per interpretare la mia visione ma modella nude. Uso le mie visioni quotidiane per mixarle e creare qualcosa di nuovo, una volta mescolate per bene. -
Your works are a mix of fashion and conceptual photography. How do you create a set and, first of all, how so you build the story you want to portray in your mind?
- Everything around me can inspire. For example I've been in Opera in Barcelona and admired these beautiful red opera chairs and some gold and blue paintings on the ceiling. And I just saw at this moment the image in my mind - these colors, these chairs, but on the beach - with the gold sand and blue sky. And naked models except singing actresses. So I use my everyday impressions to remix them and create something new mixing them. -

Alcune delle tue immagini mi ricordano l'estetica dei fotografi di moda degli anni passati. Quali sono i tuoi riferimenti artistici e culturali?
- Di tutto e di più. Non ho stili o epoche preferiti. In un’immagine mescolo riferimenti diversi. Ad ogni modo, per via della posizione degli oggetti e dei corpi, oltre che dei colori, i miei lavori mi ricordano i dipinti di Savador Dalì, ma con lo stile degli anni Ottanta. E questo per via degli accessori e altri dettagli che utilizzo sul set. Amo tantissimo l’arte e la porto in ogni mia fotografia. -
Some of your pictures reminds me the aesthetic of fashion photography made in the past. What are your artistic and cultural references?
- Well, everything. I don't have favorites styles or epochs, but I used to mix different references in one picture. It could be futuristic look, but in location and colors remind me Salvador Dali paintings, but with the style of 80th in accessories etc. I'm really hungry for art person, and love to combine details from different areas and epochs. -
Cartier Bresson diceva che "i primi 10.000 scatti sono i peggiori" per un fotografo, quando capisci tu che uno scatto è quello giusto?
- Le migliaia di foto realizzate ai matrimoni sono state certamente un buon modo per capire e migliorare la tecnica, dalla reazione alla visione della luce e tutto il resto. Ma di sicuro ogni anno guardo le mie foto fatte in precedenza e mi rendo conto che quella giusta è ancora da scattare. In ogni momento cerco qualcos'altro, non mi accontento mai dei miei lavori attuali. Voglio dire, li amo in questo momento, ma sono sempre in un processo di ricerca. -
Cartier Bresson used to say that "the first 10.000 phots are the worst” for a photographer. When did you realize that a shot is the right one?
- As I've been a wedding photographer for years and I could make 10.000 photos during couple of weddings, I think that it was really good school to improve my technical skills, reaction, vision of light etc. But for sure every year I look at my pictures made earlier and realize that the right one is still in the future. Every moment I'm looking for something else, I never satisfied with my current works. I mean I love them at the moment, but I always in the process of searching. -

Durante la quarantena dovuta al Covid-19 hai sviluppato il progetto Selfie Isolation. Puoi dirci qualcosa di più a riguardo?
- La performance fotografica Selfie Isolation è una serie di autoritratti e video dietro le quinte realizzati nel mio appartamento in quarantena durante la pandemia di Covid-19. Ho chiamato questo progetto performance fotografica, perché quasi ogni giorno (quando non potevamo nemmeno andare via dall'appartamento) ho pubblicato su Instagram una foto e ho anche mostrato un video sul processo di creazione, e molte persone erano davvero coinvolte in questa sfida quotidiana e mi hanno sostenuto. Ho usato solo un pezzo di muro bianco nel mio appartamento e alcune cose che posso trovare a casa: abiti, cibo, quadri. Non ho usato Photoshop, tutte le idee sono state realizzate in modo organico. È stata una sfida artistica particolare per me. Ho inventato nuove idee usando strumenti molto limitati e ho “recitato nel mio teatro”, creando tutto live. È stato il mio modo per salvare la mente durante questo periodo folle. L'ho reso ancora più pazzo, ma mi ha aiutato a sentirmi più forte. -
During the Covid-19 quarantine you developed the project Selfie Isolation. Can you tell something more about it?
- Photo performance Selfie Isolation is a series of self portraits and behind the scenes videos made in my flat at quarantine during pandemic of Covid-19. I called this project photo performance, because almost every day (when we couldn't even go away from the flat) I posted in Instagram one picture and also showed video about process of creation, and many people were really involved to this everyday challenge and supported me. I used only a piece of white wall in my flat and some stuff which I can find at home - any outfits, food, paintings. I didn't use Photoshop effects, all ideas were realized in reality. It was special art challenge for me. I invented new ideas with using very limited tool and I played in my own “theatre" and created all the scenes in reality. It was my own way to save my mind during this crazy time. I made it even more crazy, but it helped me to feel myself stronger. -
Come hai vissuto quel periodo? Eri sempre a Barcellona?
- Sì ero nel mio appartamento a Barcellona e ho passato tutto il tempo a lavorare. Quando non scattavo andavo sul tetto dell’edificio per prendere un po’ d’aria e fare jogging, anche se era vietato. Alla fine ho fatto amicizia con tutti gli altri amanti dello sport del mio palazzo e, alla fine della quarantena, ci siamo incontrati per bene. -
How did you live that period? Where you in Barcelona?
- So all this period was spent in my flat in Barcelona and almost all the time I spent with Selfie Isolation project. What I could do also to help myself to survive is walking on the rooftop of the building where I live to have some fresh air and make some jogging. At the end of quarantine all neighbors who love sports knew each other, because we met every day on this rooftop although it was prohibited. -
Pensi che il sistema artistico cambierà a causa del virus?
- Del sistema non ne ho idea, ma gli artisti stanno cambiando. E così la scala delle nostre priorità. Spero che vi sia un salto di qualità in senso positivo. Lo sento davvero: sembra che le nostre menti e le nostre anime siano come delle antenne super sensibili ora. E infine questo dovrebbe, per me, portare alcune nuove soluzioni e nuova energia al mondo dell'arte. -
Do you think that the art system will change because of the virus?
- I don't know about the system, but the artists are changing. And system of their priorities is changing. I hope that the positive moment of this situation is qualitative leap for many artists, It feels like our minds and souls are like super sensitive antennas now. And finally this should bring some new solutions and new energy to the art world. -

Stai sviluppando altri progetti?
- Sì. S’intitola Be Part Of Art, dove unisco di nuovo fotografia e performance. Parte del lavoro includerà delle persone ed è per questo che sto facendo un open call. Non so quanti partecipanti ci saranno nello scatto. Invito semplicemente le persone a unirsi a me, comunico a loro solo l’immagine visiva principale (ad esempio - "tutti dovrebbero essere nudi e dipinti in colori diversi" o "giocheremo con alcune decorazioni geometriche"). E poi sul set ci sarà sempre un’improvvisazione totale a rendere il risultato unico. Mi piace fare in modo che le cose accadano liberamente. -
Are you developing any other projects?
- My current project is Be Part Of Art. I combine photography and performance again. Part of the process is having an open casting call. I don't know how many participants will be in the shot. I just invite any people to join me, I offer just main visual solution (for example - "everyone should be naked and painted in different colors" or "we will play with some geometric decorations"). And then on the stage it's total improvisation every time and it makes the result look unique and un-staged. I just let things happen. -
Un pensiero sulla fotografia.
- Sembra che la fotografia, nella sua primordiale accezione, stia scomparendo. Non esiste più la funzione di semplice fissazione della realtà, tutti possono fissarla con i propri cellulari. La fotografia diventa più complicata, più filosofica e concettuale. Si sta mescolando con un altro supporto (il web). E la parola fotografo suona come un po’ “vecchia scuola" per me ora. Qualcosa tra "artista visivo" e "direttore artistico" è più vicino al significato contemporaneo. -
A thought on photography.
- It feels like photography in an old meaning is going away. There is no more function of just fixation of reality, everyone can fixate it with their mobiles. Photography becomes more complicated, more philosophic and conceptual. It's mixing with another media. And the word Photographer sounds like a little bit old school for me now. Something between "Visual artist" and "Art director" is closer to the contemporary meaning. -
