Amaranta Medri trasforma pozzanghere in sogno, una città in una dichiarazione d’amore. A questo proposito, la video maker milanese realizza il suo ultimo atto d’amore per Milano, cronologicamente parlando: La cler. Si tratta di un progetto in cui Amaranta filma e intervista i ristoratori della sua città alle 18, quando ancora non esisteva la zona rossa. Cosa ha scoperto? Ecco il suo racconto.

Amaranta Medri transforms puddles into dreams, a city into a declaration of love. In this regard, the milanese video maker realizes her last act of love for Milan, chronologically speaking: La cler. It is a project in which Amaranta films and interviews the restaurateurs of her city at 6 pm, when the red zone did not yet exist. What did she discover? Here is her story.

Amaranta partiamo subito da La cler, il tuo ultimo progetto, una video testimonianza degli effetti che il penulitmo DPCM ha prodotto sui bar e ristoranti di Milano, prima che la città diventasse zona rossa. Ce lo racconti?

- La cler è un progetto nato per caso, una sera che camminavo per Brera insieme al mio migliore amico (ovviamente prima delle 23.00 - ti parlo ormai di tre settimane fa). Chiacchieravamo e guardavamo le serrande abbassate dei nostri posti preferiti, dove siamo sempre stati abituati a ritrovarci la sera per fare due chiacchiere, bere un bicchiere di vino, fare una partita di backgammon e sopratutto per distrarci, per concederci un momento felice senza troppi pensieri e preoccupazioni. Camminando dicevamo," pensa se un giorno tutto questo non ci sarà più, pensa se con l’ennesimo lockdown alcuni dei nostri posti del cuore chiuderanno”. E così ci siamo detti “filmiamoli, documentiamo questa situazione - documentiamo quello che per noi è “presente” e che magari un giorno non ci sarà più. Abbiamo voluto farlo per noi e per loro. Per tutti gli amici che si ritrovano (come tutti) in una situazione incerta e sospesa, senza fantasia di fuga e che sembra non finire mai. E così siamo partiti un pomeriggio correndo contro il tempo perché alle 18.00 avrebbero chiuso tutto e ci siamo concessi una giornata per chiacchierare con le persone. Così abbiamo ritrovato tanta umanità, ci siamo sentiti parte di qualcosa.Ci hanno aperto il loro cuore con sincerità. Non abbiamo avuto paura di parlare con loro (ovviamente a dovuta distanza e con le mascherine). Questa pandemia ci ha portato a mantenere sempre distanza sia fisica che di cuore nei confronti di chi va oltre al tuo nucleo familiare e a quei due amici che vedi sempre. Le mascherine e la distanza di sicurezza, non hanno fatto da filtro ma anzi, si è creata una poesia e un’intimità che caratterizza il video. -

Amaranta let's start immediately with La cler, your latest project, a video testimony of the effects that the penulithm DPCM produced on the bars and restaurants of Milan, before the city became a red zone. Can you tell us about it?

- La cler is a project born by chance, one evening when I was walking around Brera with my best friend (obviously before 11.00 pm - I'm talking about three weeks ago). We chatted and looked at the lowered shutters of our favorite places, where we have always been used to meeting in the evening to have a chat, have a glass of wine, have a game of backgammon and above all to distract ourselves, to allow ourselves a happy moment without too many thoughts and concerns. Walking we said, "think if one day all this will no longer be there, think if with yet another lockdown some of our favorite places will close." And so we said to ourselves "let's film them, document this situation - document what it is for us" present "and that maybe one day it won't be there anymore. We wanted to do it for us and for them. For all friends who find themselves (like everyone else) in an uncertain and suspended situation, with no fantasy of escape and that seems to never end. And so we started one afternoon racing against time because at 6 pm they would have closed everything and we allowed ourselves a day to chat with people. So we found so much humanity, we felt part of something. They opened their hearts to us with sincerity. We weren't afraid to talk to them (obviously at due distance and with masks). This pandemic has led us to always keep a distance both physical and heart from those who go beyond your family nucleus re and those two friends you always see. The masks and the safety distance did not act as a filter but rather, a poetry and intimacy were created that characterize the video. -

La frase con cui inauguri le interviste è: "Raccontami qualcosa di bello." Quali sono le storie più belle, nonostante la criticità del momento, che sei riuscita a raccogliere?

- Le storie più belle che abbiamo raccolto sono racconti passati di una Milano gloriosa. Alle persone si illuminavano gli occhi quando parlavano degli anni ’80 e ‘90 in cui c’era voglia di vivere senza paura, dove le persone potevano girare liberamente, cantare, ballare e abbracciare i propri amici e lavorare crescere produrre. In questo momento purtroppo di “bello” ci hanno raccontato ben poco. -

- The most beautiful stories we have collected are past tales of a glorious Milan. People's eyes lit up when they talked about the 80s and 90s when there was a desire to live without fear, where people could roam freely, sing, dance and hug their friends and work grow produce. Unfortunately, at this moment of "beautiful" they told us very little. -

A proposito di Milano, ci racconti di Mon amour?

- Mon amour è il primo pezzo che ho realizzato e prodotto. Dico realizzato perché la A di mon amour ha dato il via alla ricerca di un alfabeto di fotografie aeree realizzate attraverso le forme dell’architettura e dei paesaggi. È un progetto che ormai sto facendo da tre anni e ho collezionato molte lettere. L’idea è quella di usare la fotografia come strumento per scrivere dei messaggi. -

Speaking of Milan, can you tell us about Mon amour?

- Mon amour is the first piece I made and produced. I say realized because the A of mon amour started the search for an alphabet of aerial photographs made through the forms of architecture and landscapes. It's a project I've been doing for three years now and I've collected a lot of letters. The idea is to use photography as a tool for writing messages. -

Piuttosto che sui muri di città. Ci vuole una certa immaginazione… Sei sempre stata così creativa?

- Sono nata in una famiglia molto creativa e stimolante.Mia madre è una persona poliedrica un po artista un po imprenditrice che si è sempre reinventata durante la sua vita. Una fonte di stimoli per me,Mi ha portata fin da bambina a vedere arte, mostre, fiere, design, cinema e tanta bellezza.. Ha nutrito la ma testa di immagini, esperienze, dettagli che a volte senza neanche farlo apposta ritrovo nei miei lavori. I see you in realtà nasce dall’avversione che ho nei confronti della pioggia motivo per cui ho cercato di vedere dei lati positivi, ho come trasformato le pozzanghere in accessi verso altri mondi e osservandole ho iniziato a trasformare in forme con l’ausilio di piccoli segni grafici. Da lì lo stimolo a cercarle ovunque. -

Among your most interesting projects is I see you, visible on your Instagram account, in which you trace faces and objects in the puddles, in the sky, thanks to the shape and arrangement of the clouds. Rather than on city walls. It takes some imagination… Have you always been so creative?

- I was born into a very creative and stimulating family.My mother is a multifaceted person who is a bit of an artist and a bit of an entrepreneur who has always reinvented herself throughout her life. A source of stimuli for me, it has taken me since childhood to see art, exhibitions, fairs, design, cinema and a lot of beauty .. It has nourished my head with images, experiences, details that sometimes without even doing it on purpose I find in my works. I see you actually comes from the aversion I have towards rain, which is why I tried to see the positive sides, I like transformed the puddles into accesses to other worlds and observing them I started to transform into shapes with the help of small graphic signs. - I droni sono stati il via ai video. Ho iniziato ad usarli durante un viaggio con mio padre (a lui devo la mia prima macchina fotografica e il mio super drone) e una volta tornata indietro guardando le immagini ho voluto imparare i programmi di editing per fare dei montaggi all’altezza delle immagini collezionate. Da lì è partita la passione per i video. Ho imparato l’editing da sola con tutorial online. -

- Drones were the go-ahead for videos. I started using them during a trip with my father (I owe my first camera and my super drone to him) and once I went back looking at the images I wanted to learn the editing programs to make montages at the height of the collected images. From there the passion for videos started. I learned editing by myself with online tutorials. -

Covid-19 a parte, sembri una persona che viaggia molto. Spesso i luoghi che visiti fanno da sfondo ai tuoi lavori. Quali sono quelli che ti ispirano di più?

- Il viaggio finora che mi ha emozionato di più è stato sicuramente l’Argentina: un mondo cromatico che mi ha affascinato. Ho attraversato le saline che sono deserti bianchi ricoperti da uno specchio d’acqua bassissima che fa da specchio al cielo, cavalcato nel rosso dei canyon a forme di navi, castelli e obelischi. Ho vissuto a Brooklyn parte della ia università e sono molto legata a New York. -

Covid-19 aside, you seem like a person who travels a lot. Often the places you visit are the background to your works. Which are the ones that inspire you the most?

- The journey so far that has moved me most has certainly been Argentina: a chromatic world that has fascinated me. I crossed the salt flats which are white deserts covered by a very low water mirror that mirrors the sky, ridden in the red of the canyons in the shapes of ships, castles and obelisks. I lived in Brooklyn part of the university and I am very attached to New York. -

- A very short movie è un video che ho realizzato sempre con il mio migliore amico il giorno che mi sono stati regalati i goggles per il drone. Ci divertiva l’idea della realtà virtuale che ti porta in un altro mondo quando potresti essere da solo in una stanza e abbiamo ironicamente cercato di rappresentarlo. -

What is A very short movie?

- A very short movie is a video that I always made with my best friend the day I was given the goggles for the drone. We were amused by the idea of ​​virtual reality that takes you to another world when you could be alone in a room and we ironically tried to represent it. -

Oltre all'arte e a fare i video, quali sono le tue passioni?

- La mia passione più grande è viaggiare. È la ricerca di posti nuovi, persone, colori ed esperienze. È ciò che più mi stimola e apre la mia mente e mi aiuta a trovare nuove idee. Appena ho un po di tempo libero disegno, faccio collage alla vecchia maniera, con forbici e colla. Colleziono conigli e sempre e sopratutto immagini, sia che scatto sia che trovo in giro. Sono pazza per il vintage, la ricerca di pezzi unici e solo tuoi. Mi piace pensare di dargli una nuova vita anche solo cambiandogli i bottoni o le maniche. -

Besides art and making videos, what are your passions?

- My biggest passion is traveling. It is the search for new places, people, colors and experiences. It is what stimulates me the most and opens my mind and helps me find new ideas. As soon as I have some free drawing time, I make collages the old way, with scissors and glue. I collect rabbits and always and above all images, whether I shoot or I find around. I'm crazy about vintage, the search for unique pieces and yours alone. I like to think of giving it a new life just by changing its buttons or sleeves. -

Progetti per il futuro?

- Sarei voluta tornare negli Stati Uniti a fare un Master in animazione ed effetti speciali. Al momento mi sembra difficile. mi manca molto viaggiare ma cerco di farlo comunque con la mia mente e la mia fantasia. Per ora ho un progetto cantiere: inaugurerò una mostra di lettere aeree chiamata A volte volo, Covid permettendo. -

Projects for the future?

- I would have liked to go back to the United States to do a Masters in animation and special effects. At the moment it seems difficult to me. I really miss traveling but I try to do it anyway with my mind and my imagination. For now I have a construction project: I will inaugurate an exhibition of aerial letters called Sometimes I fly, Covid permitting. -
