Beatrice Pesenti racconta Bebe’s Vintage Bling

Un ricordo d’infanzia, una madre appassionata di gioielli. E poi l’arte e il design che arricchiscono la visione, quella di Beatrice Pesenti founder del progetto Bebe’s Vintage Bling. La creativa raccoglie in giro per il mondo gioielli vintage e dà loro nuova vita. Un percorso imprenditoriale dal sapore etico, bello ed esclusivo, come racconta la stessa Beatrice, cresciuta tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti, dove ha passato pare della sua vita, studiando e poi lavorando come assistente di ricerca per il dipartimento curatoriale del Museo Contemporaneo di San Diego.

A childhood memory, a mother who is passionate about jewelry. And then art and design that enrich the vision, that of Beatrice Pesenti, founder of the Bebe's Vintage Bling project. The creative collects vintage jewels from around the world and gives them new life. An entrepreneurial path with an ethical, beautiful and exclusive flavor, as told by Beatrice herself, who grew up between Italy and the United States, where she spent part of her life, studying and then working as a research assistant for the curatorial department of the Museum of Contemporary in San Diego.

Beatrice, quando hai avuto l'idea di creare il tuo progetto Bebe's Vintage Bling?

- A dire la verità era già da un po’ di tempo che ci pensavo. Ma come molte idee, il "come" è sempre l'aspetto più problematico. Mia madre è una designer e molti anni fa ha iniziato a disegnare gioielli, solo come hobby, anche riproponendo pezzi ereditati per modernizzarli e renderli più vicini al suo stile. Ho sempre amato la moda e il design, ma quando lei ha iniziato a disegnare e a lavorare con questi pezzi ho finito per innamorarmi anche io dei gioielli, specialmente quelli vintage. Prendo molta ispirazione da lei, come molte cose nella mia vita. Con il tempo, sono anche diventata consapevole di voler avere una mia attività, perché penso che lavorare per te stesso sia la cosa più soddisfacente e ti permetta di sentire una vera realizzazione personale. Durante e dopo il lockdown ho sofferto molta ansia e ho iniziato ad aver bisogno di un nuovo progetto creativo, ma anche di una nuova direzione professionale perché mi sono trovata senza lavoro. Un giorno all'improvviso mi sono detta: devo farlo, devo almeno provarci. Questo progetto è un mix di tutte le cose che amo ma in cui sono anche molto brava, e considerando la direzione in cui sta andando l'e-commerce, non penso ci sia momento migliore per lanciare questa impresa. -

Beatrice, when did you get the idea of creating your Bebe's Vintage Bling project?

- To be honest I've been thinking about it for some time, but just like many ideas, the "how" is always the most problematic aspect. My mom is a designer and a few years ago she started designing jewelry, just as a hobby, but also repurposing inherited pieces to modernize them and render them closer to her style. I have always loved fashion and design, but when she started reinventing these pieces I fell in love with jewelry, especially vintage jewelry. I get a lot of inspiration from her, just like many other things in my life. With time, I've also become aware that owning my own business and working for myself is the only way I will find true personal satisfaction. During and after the lockdown, I suffered from anxiety and began to need a new creative outlet, but also a new direction since I was out of work for quite some time. One day suddenly I said to myself: I have to do this, at least try. This project is a mix of all the things I love but things I am also really good at, and considering the direction e-commerce is taking, I don't think there is a better time to launch this business. -

Qual è il significato più importante dietro Bebe's?

- Sono una persona abbastanza sentimentale. Le cose che indosso o possiedo devono avere un significato per me e mi devono rappresentare, oltre all'aspetto estetico. Penso che Bebe's Vintage Bling dia alle persone un’ulteriore possibilità di esprimere la propria identità e stile tramite questi accessori, però facendolo in un modo sostenibile. Trovo preoccupante questo trend di "fast fashion" e il modo in cui consumiamo, soprattutto vestiti e gioielli. Credo poi che esprimersi secondo la propria personalità sia altrettanto importante. Comprando gioielli vintage o di seconda mano si compie una scelta sostenibile senza dover rinunciare al lato estetico. -

What is the most important meaning behind Bebe’s?

- I am a fairly sentimental person. The things I wear or own need to have meaning to me and they also have to represent me beyond just the aesthetic. I think Bebe's Vintage Bling gives people additional ways of expressing their identity and style through these accessories, while doing so in a sustainable way. I have big concerns around fast fashion and the way we consume, especially clothes and jewelry. But I also believe self expression is very important, therefore when you buy vintage or second hand jewelry, you make a more sustainable choice without sacrificing the latter. -

Sostenibilità, riciclo. Anche il lusso può essere green?

- Si, credo che il lusso possa diventare sempre più green, ma deve essere uno sforzo collettivo. Sono rimasta molto colpita quando Giorgio Armani ha affermato recentemente che il fast fashion è immorale e che i marchi di lusso non dovrebbero cercare di competere o sostenere queste pratiche. Secondo me ha completamente ragione, e spero che questo pensiero venga adottato da altri brand. Purtroppo siamo tutti un po’ responsabili, e siamo arrivati a un punto dove c'è troppo spreco e la richiesta per merce veloce ed economica è diventata insostenibile. Anche noi consumatori facciamo parte del problema, quindi dobbiamo rivalutare le nostre abitudini e la nostra etica intorno a queste decisioni. -

Sustainability, recycling. Can luxury also be green?

- Yes, I do believe that luxury can become greener, but it has to be a collective effort. I was so impressed when Giorgio Armani recently stated that fast fashion was immoral and that luxury brands should neither try to compete or support these practices. I think he is completely right and I hope this way of thinking is adopted by other brands. Unfortunately we are all somewhat at fault for consumerism, but we are at a point where there is too much waste and an unsustainable demand for fast and cheap goods. Us consumers are the problem as well, so we need to reevaluate our habits and ethics around these decisions. -

Dove trovi i gioielli che vendi sul sito?

- Mi procuro i gioielli in vari modi. Spesso seguo le aste o cerco annunci da privati. In America ci sono anche queste cosiddette Estate Sales, che sono sostanzialmente liquidazioni del proprio patrimonio dovute a difficoltà finanziarie o a cause del decesso di una persona. L'obiettivo è trovare pezzi particolari con un alto valore ma a prezzi scontati, che siano anche di tendenza e per i quali ci sia richiesta. -

Where do you find the jewels you sell on the website?

- I source the jewelry in various ways. Often I follow auctions and private ads. In America there are also these so-called Estate Sales, which are basically personal liquidations due to either financial hardship or due to the passion of the person. The goal is to find unique pieces with a high value but at discounted prices, but that are also on trend and for which there is a demand. -

Qual è il tuo rapporto con la moda e il mondo del gioiello?

- Fino ad ora ho avuto solo un rapporto molto personale con la moda e i gioielli. Mi piace scoprire nuovi marchi e vedere l'innovazione e la creatività degli altri. Da quando ho lanciato questo progetto posso già vedere come il mio rapporto sta cambiando in uno più orientato al business, perché ovviamente l'obiettivo è di avere successo e poter vedere crescere questa progetto. -

What is your relationship with fashion and the world of jewelry?

- Until recently I've had just a very personal relationship with fashion and jewelry. I enjoy discovering new brands and seeing the innovation and creativity of others. Since launching this project, I can already see that my relationship is changing to a more business oriented one, because obviously the goal is be successful and be able to continue growing this business. -

Hai sempre avuto una sensibilità artistica spiccata, credi ci sia una relazione tra l'arte in generale e il gioiello in particolare?

- Secondo me si. Vedo i gioielli come pezzi d'arte. C'è un processo creativo che trovo molto simile a quello di qualsiasi artista, soprattutto quando si parla di gioielli vintage. Ogni orafo è un artista per sé, partendo dall’idea, poi il disegno del pezzo, fino ad arrivare alla lavorazione dei metalli con le proprie mani. -

You have always had a strong artistic sensibility, do you think there is a relationship between art in general and jewelery in particular?

- In my opinion yes, and I see jewelry as pieces of art. There is a creative process that I find very similar to the creative process of any artist, especially when dealing with vintage jewelry. Every goldsmith is an artist in himself, starting with the idea or drawing of a piece, to the craftsmanship in handling metals with their own hands. -

Un bijou che indossi sempre?

- Una catena in oro, stile corda, con un ciondolo della Madonna. Era di mia nonna che è morta improvvisamente tre anni fa. In quel periodo ero in America quindi non sono potuta tornare in Italia per il suo funerale dato che era successo tutto così all'improvviso. Le ero molto vicina e ricordo che tutta la situazione mi ha davvero fatto soffrire. Mia madre mi portò questa collana dopo essere tornata dal funerale e da allora l'ho sempre indossata. È incredibile come un oggetto possa diventare un'estensione di te, mi sento nuda senza. -

A bijou that you always wear?

- A gold rope chain with a pendant of the Madonna. It was my grandmother's, who passed away very suddenly three years ago. I was in America at the time therefore I couldn't attend the funeral here in Italy due to the suddenness of the whole situation. I was very close to her and I remember the whole situation really affected me. My mom brought me this necklace after she returned from the funeral, and I've worn it ever since. It is quite amazing how an object can become an extension of you, I honestly feel naked without it now. -

Progetti per il futuro?

- Al momento mi sto dedicando a tempo pieno a questo progetto, e finché non avrò raggiunto i miei obiettivi non ho intenzione di intraprendere nient'altro. Ma c'è un progetto personale… un matrimonio! Dovevo sposarmi il 5 settembre, ma abbiamo rimandato a causa della pandemia - il mio compagno è americano e tutta la sua famiglia e i nostri amici non sarebbero potuti venire. -

Future projects?

- At the moment I am dedicating myself full time to this project, and until I've reached my goals I don't plan to undertake anything else. But there is one personal project... a wedding! I was supposed to get married on september 5th but we postponed due to the pandemic - my partner is from America and all his family and our friends from there would not have been able to come. -
