Ludovica e Ginevra Fagioli
Si parla spesso di made in Italy. Ma per capire il contesto in cui si muovono i designer contemporanei, forse è utile scoprire i luoghi in cui lavorano, nei quali fanno realizzare da piccoli laboratori le loro collezioni. Caftanii Firenze di Ludovica e Ginevra Fagioli rappresenta l’emblema di questa unione. Avevano già raccontato tempo fa come era nato il loro brand , l’amore per la città in cui sono cresciute, ma, a parte qualche input ispiratore, non si è mai approfondito il loro rapporto con la città di Dante. E allora è da lì, dal loro ufficio fiorentino, che si raccontano, cogliendo l’occasione di presentare i capi della collezione estiva, ora nei negozi, anche online.
There is a loto of talk on made in Italy. But to understand the context in which contemporary designers move, perhaps it is useful to discover the places in which they work, in which they have their collections created by small ateliers. Caftanii Firenze by Ludovica and Ginevra Fagioli is the emblem of this union. They had already told some time ago how their brand was born, the love for the city in which they grew up, but, apart from some inspirational input, their relationship with the city of Dante was never deepened. And so it is from there, from their Florentine office, that they tell each other, taking the opportunity to present the clothes of the summer collection, now in stores, even online.
Ginevra, Ludovica, partiamo dalla moda: qual è il vostro capo preferito della collezione primavera-estate 2019 di Caftanii Firenze?
G: - Io aspetto un attimo a risponderti, ne ho così tanti! -
L: - Io lo so! Sono innamorata del completo Polly. Sono una gonna e un top di ispirazione etiope. È ispirato, e dedicato, a una cara amica di famiglia che tempo fa ha regalato a entrambe un completo tipico del paese africano. Noi lo abbiamo rivisitato per la donna Caftanii. -
G: - Sì il Polly, inoltre, ci sarà anche nell’invernale. Comunque anche per me il Polly e tra i più belli e aggiungerei anche la giacca-blusa alla marinara in lino, sia in bianco e blu. Comunque, nonostante abbiamo deciso di fare vestiti pensando sempre a ogni tipo di donna e fisicità, che per noi è fondamentale assieme all’aspetto della qualità dei materiali e delle rifiniture, devo dirti che da Caftanii non ci sarà mai un solo capo che uscirà senza essere davvero apprezzato da me e Ludovica. Non riusciamo a fare questo tipo di compromessi. -
Ginevra, Ludovica, let's start with fashion: what is your favorite item from the Caftanii Firenze spring-summer 2019 collection?
G: - I take a moment to answer, I have so many! -
L: - I know it! I'm in love with the Polly suit. They are a skirt and a top of Ethiopian inspiration. It is inspired, and dedicated, to a dear friend of ours who gave us both a typical outfit from the African country. We have revisited it for the Caftanii woman. -
G: - Yes, the Polly will also be present in the next winter collection. However, for me too the Polly is among the most beautiful and I would also add the jacket-blouse in linen, both in white and blue. However, despite having decided to make clothes always thinking of every type of woman and physicality, which for us is fundamental together with the quality of materials and finishes, I must tell you that from Caftanii there will never be a single garment that will come out without to be really appreciated by me and Ludovica. We can't make this kind of compromise. -

Ha un nome la collezione?
L: - Un nome unico no. Piuttosto è ispirata da una parte dal mondo bohémienne, per via delle sete e dei dettagli, i kimoni… dall’altra, invece, prende spunto dall’estetica dei marinai e della nautica in generale: ci sono le righe, i colori tipici (blu, bianco e rosso), così come i nodi. L’abbiamo pensata così, una parte più classica e l’altra, la prima, più romantica. -
Does the collection have a name?
L: - A unique name no. Rather it is inspired on one side by the bohemian world, because of the silks and details, the kimonos ... on the other hand, instead, it takes inspiration from the aesthetics of sailors and boating in general: there are the lines, the typical colors (blue , white and red), as well as the nodes. We thought so, a more classic part and the other, the first, more romantic. -
Ecco, un luogo romantico, catartico, di Firenze qual è?
L: - A me un luogo che mi emoziona, che ogni volta mi fa sentire orgogliosa di essere fiorentina è sicuramente il Ponte Santa Trìnita. Perché da un lato hai Ponte Vecchio, dall’altro il Lungarno Corsini che, in inverno, riflette dei colori pazzeschi. Ecco mi sento in pace. Possibilmente al mattino molto presto, quando non vi passa nessuno.
G: - Sì è vero. Al mattino Firenze è bellissima. Quando devo fare delle commissioni esco presto di casa (perché mi piace camminare e, anche, per arrivare prima e non fare file inutili), passo sempre attraverso il centro e, ti dirò, è proprio una poesia in quel momento del giorno. Uno dei “miei” posti è Boboli invece, quando non è invaso dai turisti è l’emblema della pace. -
Here, a romantic place, cathartic, of Florence what is it?
L: - To me a place that moves me, that every time makes me feel proud of being Florentine is definitely the Ponte Santa Trìnita. Because on one side you have Ponte Vecchio, on the other the Lungarno Corsini which, in winter, reflects crazy colors. Here I feel at peace. Possibly very early in the morning when no one comes by.
G: - Yes it's true. In the morning Florence is beautiful. When I have to run errands I leave home early (because I like to walk and, also, to arrive earlier and not make unnecessary queues), I always go through the center and, I'll tell you, it's really a poem at that time of day. One of "my" places is Boboli instead, when it is not invaded by tourists it is the emblem of peace. -

Firenze è la città delle botteghe, degli artigiani. Chi sono e che rapporti avete con loro?
L: - C’è Alessio in Via Sdrucciolo dei Pitti. Più che un artigiano è, almeno per noi, un’artista. Lo abbiamo conosciuto quando ho dovuto far rivestire delle poltroncine che avevo preso da Flair, sul Lungarno Corsini, prima era in Piazza Goldoni. La proprietaria è milanese come te ma si è trasferita qui. Tornando a lui, realizza anche cuscini con tessuti pregiatissimi, tipo sete veneziane, e molte altre meraviglie. In Via dei Serragli c’è Duccio, Duccio Banchi, bronzista. Siamo particolarmente affezionate a loro due. Devo dirti che non si limitano a essere solo artigiani, sono personaggi eccezionali che sanno raccontarsi in modo incredibile. C’è questa argentiera in Borgo San Jacopo che si chiama Pagliai, ecco lei ha visto di tutto e tutti; scene familiari di ogni tipo. Lei, poi, ha energia da vendere. -
G: - Mi viene in mente anche la signora Locchi, che fa parte di una famiglia di vetrai, proprietaria della moleria Locchi, in Via Domenico Burchiello. Ha una potenza incredibile, più di ottant’anni e ti mette in riga eh. Persone di altri tempi che, quando le incontri, indipendentemente da quello che compri od osservi, ti lasciano sempre qualcosa. Più vado avanti, poi, preferisco avere meno cose ma belle e fatte e bene. -
Florence is the city of shops and artisans. Who are they and what is your relationship with them?
L: - There is Alessio in Via Sdrucciolo dei Pitti. More than a craftsman, he is, at least for us, an artist. We met him when I had to cover the small armchairs I had taken from Flair, on Lungarno Corsini, before it was in Piazza Goldoni. The owner is from Milan, but she moved here. Returning to him, he also makes cushions with very fine fabrics, such as Venetian silks, and many other wonders. In Via dei Serragli there is Duccio, Duccio Banchi, a bronze painter. We are particularly fond of them. I must tell you that they are not limited to being only artisans, they are exceptional characters who know how to tell themselves in an incredible way. There is this silversmith in Borgo San Jacopo called Pagliai, here she has seen everything and everyone; familiar scenes of all kinds. Then, she has energy to sell. -
G: - I am also reminded of signora Locchi, who is part of a family of glassmakers, owner of the Locchi mill, in Via Domenico Burchiello. It has incredible power, over eighty years and she puts you in line! People of other times who, when you meet, regardless of what you buy or observe, always leave you something. More I go on, then, I prefer to have less things but beautiful and done and well. -

Parlando ancora di moda, di vanità, quali sono invece gli spazi che apprezzate di più?
L: - Loretta Caponi, in Via delle Belle Donne. Lo spazio è molto grande ed è meraviglioso. Lei è una ricamatrice molto importante e, nell’atelier, realizzano anche abiti su misura. In realtà confezionano anche tessili per la casa. Lì davvero puoi sognare. -
G: - Sì è splendido e la cosa bella è che ora ci sono i figli che gestiscono l’azienda. Persone le quali, anziché farla morire come purtroppo spesso accade, l’hanno valorizzata e portata anche su piattaforme online di tutto rispetto. Ad ogni modo, tutto quello che ha una storia e un passato da raccontare che è presente ancora oggi a me piace. -
Speaking again of fashion, of vanity, which are the spaces you appreciate most?
L: - Loretta Caponi, in Via delle Belle Donne. The space is very large and it's wonderful. She is a very important embroiderer and, in the atelier, they also make custom-made dresses. In fact, they also make home textiles. There you can really dream. -
G: - Yes it is splendid and the nice thing is that now there are the children who run the company. People who, instead of making it die, as unfortunately often happens, have valued it and brought it to even respectable online platforms. Anyway, I like everything that has a story and a past to tell that is still present today. -

Firenze è anche arte. A parte gli Uffizi, quali sono i luoghi che frequentate di più?
L: - Mi è molto familiare Palazzo Strozzi, anche se secondo me dovrebbe valorizzarsi di più.
G: - È difficile non dire gli Uffizi comunque, eh. Ci vai quando frequenti la scuola e poi non ci pensi più… Ma abbiamo capito la loro bellezza e il valore reale di ciò che rappresentano due anni fa, di sera, durante una visita privata alla quale abbiamo avuto la fortuna di partecipare. È stata un’occasione… sono rimasta a bocca aperta. -
L: - Mi è venuta in mente una piccola chiesa greco-ortodossa che non aprono mai, da quello che so io. Si trova anche quella in Borgo San Jacopo, e porta il nome del quartiere. Vorrei vederla, penso si possa fare domanda. -
Florence is also art. Apart from the Uffizi, which are the places you frequent the most?
L: - Palazzo Strozzi is very familiar to me, although I think it should be enhanced more. -
G: - It is difficult not to say the Uffizi anyway. You go there when you attend school and then you don't think about it anymore... But we understood their beauty and the real value of what they represent two years ago, in the evening, during a private visit to which we were lucky enough to participate. It was an opportunity... I was amazed. -
L: - I remembered a small Greek Orthodox church that they never open, from what I know. The one in Borgo San Jacopo is also found, and bears the name of the neighborhood. I would like to see it, I think one can apply. -
Sono quasi le 18 ed è l’ora dell’aperitivo. Dove si va?
G: - Ci trova entrambe d’accordo il Caffè del Cibreo di Fabio Picchi, in Via Andrea del Verrocchio. E va bene, oltre che per l’aperitivo, anche a colazione, pranzo e cena. Il proprietario, inoltre, rientra tra le personalità storiche della città, specialmente nella ristorazione. Tra l’altro anche il Teatro del Sale, che gli sta proprio davanti, ha una cucina interessante, soprattutto per come viene organizzato il tutto. È uno spazio meraviglioso, dove la cultura incontra il mondo culinario.
It's almost 18 and it's aperitif time. Where are we going?
G: - We both agree on Caffè del Cibreo by Fabio Picchi, in Via Andrea del Verrocchio. And it's fine, as well as for the aperitif, also for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Furthermore, the owner is one of the historical personalities of the city, especially in this sector. Among other things, the Teatro del Sale, which is right in front of it, has an interesting kitchen, especially because of how it is organized. It is a wonderful space, where culture meets the culinary world.

Sapete che ora riesco a capire ancora di più il vostro legame con Firenze? Soprattutto rispetto a Caftanii e al vostro volerlo rendere un vero e proprio emblema del fatto in Italia.
G: - E noi siamo fiere di tutto questo. Amiamo follemente la nostra città, nonostante i viaggi e il nostro essere, ovviamente, proiettate in una visione contemporanea, com’è giusto che sia. -
Do you know that now I can understand your bond with Florence even more? Above all compared to Caftanii and to your desire to make it a real emblem of the made in Italy.
G: - And we are proud of all this. We madly love our city, despite the travels and our being, obviously, projected into a contemporary vision, as is rightly so. -
