Elsa Peretti: "I gioielli non appartengono alla moda perché devono durare nel tempo"

“I gioielli non sono moda. Sono oggetti che devono durare nel tempo. Non sono fatti per essere buttati appena nasce qualcosa di nuovo.” Elsa Peretti definisce così la sua arte, ovvero quella di designer di monili unici nel loro genere, prettamente per la maison americana (ora di LVMH) Tiffany & Co.. L’artista muore il 18 marzo 2021 appena prima di festeggiare la primavera e il suo compleanno che l’avrebbe vista festeggiare 81 anni. E diventare una delle creatrici di gioielli più longeve della storia. Lascia così il suo villaggio di Sant Martí Vell, in Spagna. Suo non a caso, dato che Elsa contribuisce a restauro completamente, dando così l’opportunità a un centinaio di anime di poterci vivere, lei compresa. Ma come in molti sanno la sua vita incomincia a Firenze, dove nasce nel 1940. Nasce così la collezione di bracciali Bone di Elsa Peretti per Tiffany & Co.. Dapprima in argento e oro poi in ottone smaltato in occasione del cinquantesimo anniversario festeggiato proprio l’anno scorso. Nel 1970 lo progetta traendo spunto dalle sue visite alla Cripta dei Cappuccini da bambina a Roma, e dal periodo trascorso a Barcellona, ispirato da Casa Milà di Antoni Gaudí.

Lavora a stretto contatto con gli artigiani che danno loro forma, dopo aver visto il disegno. Sono i maestri dell’argento a dare l’annuncio della sua scomparsa, rappresentati da una delle figure più importanti della vita di Elsa Peretti: Gianfranco Pampaloni, proprietario dell’omonima azienda di argenteria fiorentina che produce per il brand americano. Nel 2001 la maison di gioielleria alla quale resta legata tutta la vita istituisce l’Elsa Peretti Professorship In Jewelry Design. Per il suo merito, certamente, ma anche al fine di celebrare i suoi 25 anni di partnership con Tiffany & Co.. Nel 2019 le viene conferito a Firenze, il Leonardo da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award for Jewelry and Fashion Design, ritirato da Pampaloni.
