L’8 marzo 2020 l’Italia cambia faccia. Chiudono i bar e i ristoranti, i luoghi della cultura e della formazione. I cinema, le discoteche. Anche lo sport subisce un brusco arresto, compresa l’attività fisica all’aperto, vietata, forse un po’ troppo forzatamente, da uno dei primi decreti governativi emanati per contrastare l’epidemia del corona virus. Il Bel Paese si ferma (di lì a poco lo farà tutto il mondo). Gli italiani trovano rifugio in casa e si arrangiano con quello che hanno. C’è chi scopre l’arte della cucina, chi della lettura. Altri prediligono i lavori domestici. Alcuni proseguono con la loro attività e ne traggono un lavoro ad hoc. Avviene con il fotografo Gianluca Colonnese che ritrae la sua famiglia durante questi giorni di quarantena. Nasce dalla sua macchina fotografica il progetto Lockdown, appendice di un reportage di immagini domestiche divenuto un work in progress da qualche anno. Da Milano nord, dove vive, lo racconta.
On March 8, 2020 Italy changes its face. The bars and restaurants close, the places of culture and training. Cinemas, clubs. Sport also comes to an abrupt halt, including outdoor physical activity, prohibited, perhaps a little too forcibly, by one of the first government decrees issued to combat the corona virus epidemic. The Bel Paese stops (soon the whole world will do it). The Italians find refuge in the house and make do with what they have. There are those who discover the art of cooking, those of reading. Others prefer housekeeping. Some go on with their jobs. It happens to photographer Gianluca Colonnese who portrays his family during these quarantine days. The Lockdown project was born from his camera, an appendage of a reportage of domestic images that has become a work in progress for a few years. From north Milan, where he lives, he tells it.

Gianluca, inutile chiederti perché hai deciso di raccontare la quarantena attraverso la fotografia. Piuttosto mi interessa capire quando è nata in te la voglia di farlo, ritraendo la tua famiglia.
- Documento la vita della mia famiglia da 5 anni. È un reportage fotografico molto intimo che equivale più a un diario personale che ad altro. Il 23 di febbraio ho capito che quello che stavamo vivendo non aveva precedenti e quindi andava condiviso. Di certo c'è la mia esigenza di raccontare, accentuata dal fatto che molte situazioni sono comuni per migliaia di famiglie in tutto il mondo. -
Gianluca, needless to ask yourself why you decided to tell the quarantine through photography. Rather, I am interested in understanding
when the desire to do it was born in you, portraying your family.
- I've been documenting my family's life for 5 years. It is a very intimate photographic reportage that is more like a personal diary than anything else. On February 23rd I understood that what we were experiencing was unprecedented and therefore it had to be shared. Of course there is my need to tell, accentuated by the fact that many situations are common for thousands of families around the world. -

Come per il progetto dedicato a Giorgio, anche gli scatti di Lockdown appaiono positivi, non danno propriamente l'idea che si sta vivendo un momento drammatico. È un modo tuo di esorcizzare?
- È il mio modo di raccontare. Questo perché cerco sempre di avere un approccio positivo anche quando tratto tematiche complesse. Penso che oggi più che mai, siamo circondati da storie drammatiche ed è giusto che esse emergano. In questo reportage la mia necessità è di portare alla luce ciò che stiamo vivendo senza amplificare l’oscurità del dramma che ci circonda. -
As for the project dedicated to Giorgio, Lockdown's shots also appear positive, they don't really give the idea that we are experiencing a dramatic moment. Is this your way of exorcising?
- It's my way of telling. This is because I always try to have a positive approach even when dealing with complex issues. I think that today more than ever, we are surrounded by dramatic stories and it is right that they emerge. In this report, my need is to bring to light what we are experiencing without amplifying the darkness of the drama that surrounds us. -
C'è una foto in particolare che mi fa sorridere (in senso positivo), ovvero quella in cui sei in ascensore e vai a buttare la spazzatura. Quante volte al giorno lo fai? Pare che sia diventata la nuova palestra degli italiani.
- È strano pensare che un gesto che prima facevi con tanta tranquillità, ora è un rischio per te e per la tua famiglia. Buttare l’immondizia e andare a fare la spesa, sono per molti italiani l’unico momento di evasione dalle mura domestiche. E sono anche gli unici momenti che espongono al rischio di contagio. Per rispondere alla tua domanda, lo faccio un paio di volte a settimana, ma conosco chi ne fa davvero un’attività sportiva. -
There is one photo in particular that makes me smile (in a positive sense), or the one where you are in the elevator and go to throw the garbage. How many times a day do you do it? Apparently it has become the new gym for the italians.
- It is strange to think that a gesture that you used to do so calmly before is now a risk for you and your family. Throwing away the garbage and going groceries, are for many Italians the only time to escape from their home. And they are also the only moments that expose you to the risk of contagion. To answer your question, I do it a few times a week, but I know who really does a sport. -

A proposito di movimento: alcuni scatti ritraggono i tuoi figli mentregiocano a palla in salotto e mentre fanno karatè. Come l'hanno presa?
A seconda dell’età i bambini la vivono in maniera diversa. Gabriele che ha 2 anni vive benissimo questa situazione, per lui è sufficiente la presenza dei genitori. Chiara di 5, invece, ha un’estrema necessità di contatti con il mondo esterno. Fortunatamente, tra scuola, karatè e tanti giochi che facciamo assieme, questa esigenza non ha un grosso impatto. Piuttosto, è bello vedere come assieme passano le giornate inventando sempre giochi nuovi e rafforzando il loro legame. -
Speaking of sport: some shots portray your children while they play football in the living room and while doing karate. How did they get it?
- Depending on the age, children experience it differently. Gabriele, who is 2 years old, lives this situation very well, the presence of his parents is enough for him. Chiara, on the other hand, is 5 and has an extreme need for contacts with the outside world. Fortunately, between school, karate and the many games we play together, this need does not have a big impact. Rather, it's nice to see how they spend their days together always inventing new games and strengthening their bond. -

Hai scelto il bianco e nero anziché i colori. Come mai?
- La scelta del bianco e nero è stata del tutto naturale. Vivo il racconto della mia famiglia in maniera intima e da subito l’ho visto in bianco e nero, senza fronzoli, o colori che possano attirare l’attenzione, ma solo con i soggetti protagonisti delle mie immagini. -
You chose black and white instead of colors. Why?
- The choice of black and white was completely natural. I live the story of my family in an intimate way and immediately I saw it in black and white, without frills, or colors that could attract attention, but only with the protagonists of my images. -
Pensi che gli artisti stiano reagendo bene alla situazione? Mi riferisco proprio all'atto creativo. Che sensazioni hai in merito?
- Penso che stiano reagendo benissimo. L’arte non ha corpo e quindi non ha mura. Due esempi interessanti sono: la fotografa Alessandra Di Consoli che sta raccontando con disegni bellissimi le sue emozioni e sensazioni, e il fotografo Raoul Iacometti, che ha appena terminato un progetto fotografico stupendo con ballerini da tutto il mondo tramite le video chiamate. -
Do you think artists are reacting well to the situation? I refer just to the creative act. What are your feelings about it?
- I think they are reacting very well. Art has no body and therefore has no walls. Two interesting examples are: the photographer Alessandra Di Consoli who is telling her emotions and sensations with beautiful drawings, and the photographer Raoul Iacometti, who has just finished a wonderful photographic project with dancers from all over the world through video calls. -

Qual è la foto simbolo di questo momento?
- Ce ne sono diverse che credo rimarranno nella storia. Tra queste c’è quella di Stefano Dal Pozzolo, dove Papa Francesco è ritratto in una piazza di San Pietro deserta. Un’altra è quella scattata a Bergamo, dove ci sono decine di camion dell’esercito che trasportano le salme fuori dalla Lombardia. Molto spesso le foto simbolo ancor prima di essere “belle foto”, sono immagini che immortalano dei momenti indimenticabili, come quelli citati sopra. -
What is the symbolic photo of this moment?
- There are several that I believe will remain in history. Among these is that of Stefano Dal Pozzolo, where Pope Francis is portrayed in a deserted square in San Pietro. Another is the one taken in Bergamo, where there are dozens of army trucks transporting the bodies outside Lombardy. Very often the symbol photos even before being "beautiful photos" are images that capture unforgettable moments, such as those mentioned above. -

Cosa ne sarà di Lockdown e dell'arte, in generale?
- Lockdown racconta una famiglia come tante, che vive in una delle zone più colpite d’Italia. Spero rimanga come documento, e porti a comprendere quanto il sacrificio dei singoli sia importante al benessere della comunità. Per quanto riguarda l’arte, credo che tutto questo sia concime per la creatività degli esseri umani. Come ci dimostra la storia, dopo ogni periodo buio, l’umanità fiorisce. -
What will come for Lockdown and art in general?
- Lockdown tells a family like many, who lives in one of the most affected areas in Italy. I hope it remains as a document, and leads to understand how important the sacrifice of individuals is for the well-being of the community. As for art, I believe that all of this is fertilizer for the creativity of human beings. As history shows us, after every dark period, humanity flourishes. -
