I gioielli meta-poetici di Gala Rotelli si raccontano attraverso la sua voce, dall'atelier di Milano

In un accogliente e affascinante atelier a poca distanza dal Cenacolo Vinciano in quel di Milano Gala Rotelli crea i suoi gioielli e, parallelamente, alcuni oggetti di design. Figlia d’arte (suo padre è l’artista Marco Rotelli), si laurea in Architettura a Firenze, per proseguire la formazione a Parigi e Londra, approdando, finalmente, nella città meneghina, dove nel 2016 ottiene il master in Jewelery Design al Politecnico. Mentre fa questi passi, disegna, abbozza quello che è oggi il suo eponimo brand. Un concetto che risponde alla parola poesia, come racconta la stessa Gala Rotelli, tra i fondatori del collettivo creativo Engramma, dopo la diretta live su Instagram di settimana scorsa a 18 chez Nouvelle.

In a welcoming and charming atelier not far from the Cenacolo Vinciano in Milan, Gala Rotelli creates her jewels and, at the same time, some design objects. Daughter of art (her father is the artist Marco Rotelli), she graduated in Architecture in Florence, to continue her training in Paris and London, finally arriving in the city of Milan, where in 2016 she obtained a master's degree in Jewelery Design at the Politecnico . While taking these steps, she draws, sketches what her eponymous brand is today. A concept that responds to the word poetry, as Gala Rotelli herself tells us, after our Instagram live session at 18 chez Nouvelle. She is also one of the founders of the creative collective Engramma.

Gala, hai respirato creatività sin da piccola, grazie a tuo padre che è un artista. Come ti trovi a vivere in un mondo del genere?

- Sicuramente la creatività deve essere ben sostenuta da una dose di praticità, mi sto attrezzando per averla. In generale penso che tutto, nella vita di ogni singolo essere umano (e cosi anche nella creatività), sia un percorso: il carico si aggiusta durante il cammino. Inadeguatezza a parte, che contraddistingue buona parte di noi, sono convinta che attraverso la creatività si possa trovare un modo per far sentire ciascuno unico e speciale. Che si possano trasformare i sogni in oggetti e che il design sia un buon strumento per veicolare messaggi positivi. -

Gala, you have breathed creativity since childhood, thanks to your father who is an artist. How do you find yourself living in such a world?

- Surely creativity must be well supported by a dose of practicality, I'm gearing up to have it. In general I think that everything in the life of every single human being (and so also in creativity) is a path: the load is adjusted along the way. Apart from inadequacy, which distinguishes a large part of us, I am convinced that through creativity we can find a way to make everyone feel unique and special. That dreams can be transformed into objects and that design is a good tool to convey positive messages. -

Pensi che la creazione di un progetto tutto tuo di gioielli e interior design fosse un passo già scritto nel tuo percorso?

- Non lo so. So che ho sempre disegnato e scritto molto e che immergermi in quel mondo di segni, disegni e sogni è una cosa che mi ha sempre fatto sentire bene, nel luogo giusto facendo la cosa giusta. Nonostante un blocco di insicurezza ho sentito che era la strada da seguire quindi ad un certo punto ho iniziato a camminare. -

Do you think that creating your own jewelry and interior design project was a step already written in your path?

- I do not know. I know that I have always drawn and written a lot and that immersing myself in that world of signs, drawings and dreams is something that has always made me feel good, in the right place by doing the right thing. Despite a block of insecurity I felt it was the way to go so at some point I started walking. -

Parliamo dei tuoi monili. Quali sono i tratti principali che li definiscono?

- Sicuramente a livello di design sono contraddistinti da forme morbide, avvolgenti e accoglienti e a livello di texture lavoro molto con zigrinature e incisioni in modo che la superficie abbia una geometria contrastante con il volume. Molti elementi sono naturali, ma vengono geometrizzati per creare gioielli e oggetti contemporanei. Gli elementi che si alternano sono spesso foglie, piume e stelle, sassi e nuvole: elementi terreni che rimandano a significati ulteriori. Che siano simboli. -

Let's talk about your jewelry. What are the main traits that define them?

- Surely in terms of design they are characterized by soft, enveloping and welcoming shapes and in terms of texture I work a lot with knurling and incisions so that the surface has a geometry that contrasts with the volume. Many elements are natural, but are geometrized to create contemporary jewelery and objects. The elements that alternate are often leaves, feathers and stars, stones and clouds: earthly elements that refer to further meanings. Let them be symbols. -

Uno di questi è la poesia, la leggerezza. Eppure molti di loro non passano certamente inosservati. Cosa intendi, quindi, per "poesia" e “leggerezza”?

- Sicuramente non intendo leggerezza come peso specifico dell’oggetto ma come messaggio: ciascuno dei miei progetti, sia esso gioiello, decor o disegno, vuole rimandare ad un storia: è la leggerezza di Calvino, planare sulle cose e guardarle dall’alto. Il gioiello poi ha la stessa struttura della poesia: è un micromondo. Come nella poesia con poche parole si creano universi cosi e possibile creare attraverso poche linee ed elementi anelli, orecchini o collane che siano simboli. -

One of these is poetry, lightness. Yet many of them certainly do not go unnoticed. What do you mean, then, by "poetry" and "lightness"?

- I certainly don't mean lightness as the specific weight of the object but as a message: each of my projects, be it jewelry, decor or design, wants to refer to a story: it is Calvino's lightness, gliding over things and looking at them from above. The jewel then has the same structure as poetry: it is a microworld. As in poetry with a few words universes are created so it is possible to create rings, earrings or necklaces that are symbols through a few lines and elements. -

Come li realizzi?

- Il processo non è velocissimo: il primo passo e uno schizzo sulla mia agenda, poi provo a fare il modello in cera di modo da studiare volumi e superfici, in seguito se si tratta di un oggetto creo un disegno a computer, se si tratta di un gioiello creo un modello 3D che viene poi stampato e fuso attraverso le tradizionali tecniche orafe. In ognuno dei miei oggetti c’è una forte componente manuale: ho cercato sul territorio italiano artigiani specifici in grado di realizzare progetti nuovi. Ho scoperto mondi e persone meravigliose. -

How do you make them?

- The process is not very fast: the first step is a sketch on my diary, then I try to make the wax model in order to study volumes and surfaces, later if it is an object I create a computer drawing, if it is I create a 3D model of a jewel which is then printed and melted using traditional goldsmith techniques. In each of my objects there is a strong manual component: I looked for specific craftsmen in the Italian territory able to carry out new projects. I have discovered wonderful worlds and people. -

Giotto, Van Gogh, Seurat, Magritte e molti altri sono la tua fonte d'ispirazione. Hai chiamato molti modelli con i loro nomi. Ma poi ci sono le farfalle, le scale e le radici. Che significato attribuisci a questi simboli?

- È partendo dalle proprie radici, dalla consapevolezza di chi si e realmente, che si può scegliere in che direzione volare. Radici ed ali sono strettamente collegate: il primo e il punto di partenza, il secondo è il viaggio che ti porta a capire quali sono i tuoi valori e chi vuoi diventare. Anche i modelli ispirati ad artisti sono in realtà simbolici: i Giotto sono le stelle ad otto punte della Cappella degli Scrovegni, simbolo Venere e quindi di rinascita; i Van Gogh sono girasoli, simbolo di luce e primavera; i Seurat sono lune, create dai puntini tipici del pointillisme, in cui sono incastonate pietre semipreziose; i Magritte sono piume, cosa c’è di più leggero (simbolicamente) e sognante? -

Giotto, Van Gogh, Seurat, Magritte and many others are your source of inspiration. You have called many models by their names. But then there are the butterflies, the scales and the roots. What meaning do you give to these symbols?

- It is starting from your roots, from the awareness of who you really are, that you can choose which direction to fly. Roots and wings are closely linked: the first is the starting point, the second is the journey that leads you to understand what your values ​​are and who you want to become. Even the models inspired by artists are actually symbolic: the Giottos are the eight-pointed stars of the Scrovegni Chapel, symbol of Venus and therefore of rebirth; the Van Goghs are sunflowers, a symbol of light and spring; the Seurat are moons, created by the typical points of pointillism, in which semiprecious stones are set; Magritte are feathers, what is more lighter (symbolically) and dreamy? -

Pensi che un gioiello sia importante? Voglio dire, credi che svolga una funzione psicologica notevole sulla persona che lo indossa?

- Lo spero, è quello che cerco di fare con i mio lavoro: ho lavorato molto sul materiale (il bronzo o l’argento) e sulla luminosità proprio perché la lego strettamente alla luce che ciascuna di noi (ogni donna) ha nel cuore. Ciascun accessorio è un portatore simbolico di messaggi, io spero che indossando i miei gioielli le persone possano avvicinarsi alla bellezza dell’arte, alla cultura millenaria del made in Italy, fatto a mano da tanti artigiani, che possano sentire quanto è importante l’unicità, la qualità. -

Do you think a jewel is important? I mean, do you think it performs a significant psychological function on the person who is wearing it?

- I hope so, that's what I try to do with my work: I worked a lot on the material (bronze or silver) and on the brightness precisely because I tie it closely to the light that each of us (every woman) has in her heart. Each accessory is a symbolic bearer of messages, I hope that by wearing my jewels people can get closer to the beauty of art, to the millenary culture of made in Italy, handmade by many artisans, who can feel how important the uniqueness, quality. -

A proposito di persone: come ti relazioni con i tuoi clienti?

- Sono sempre molto felice di conoscerli, in questo periodo difficile cerco di rispondere a tutti su Instagram per fare in modo che sentano che dietro allo schermo c’è una persona reale, non un servizio clienti anonimo. Questo avvicinamento un tempo avveniva più facilmente venendo in studio da me, nella mia wundercammer, dove sono sempre felice di accogliere curiosi e interessati. Ovviamente è necessaria la digitalizzazione e il covid sta accelerando questo processo ma l’attenzione al singolo per me è sempre fondamentale, sia fisicamente che online. Io sono molto curiosa quindi mi piace incontrare i miei clienti e spesso anche scoprire la loro interpretazione. -

Speaking of people: how do you relate to your customers?

- I am always very happy to meet them, in this difficult period I try to respond to everyone on Instagram to make them feel that behind the screen there is a real person, not anonymous customer service. This approach was once more easily done by coming to my studio, in my wundercammer, where I am always happy to welcome curious and interested people. Obviously, digitization is necessary and covid is accelerating this process, but attention to the individual is always essential for me, both physically and online. I am very curious so I like to meet my clients and often also discover their interpretation. -

Per questo alcuni pezzi sono personalizzabili?

- Certamente, i ciondoli nuovi si chiamano Memento, una parola latina che significa memoria. La texture è simile a quella di una pietra: vorrei che ciascuno scegliesse la parola, la data, il nome che è importante ricordare, impossibile da dimenticare, e lo scrivesse in modo indelebile. La prima che ho fatto e stata Luce che oltre a esser il nome di mia figlia e la mia parola preferita: un raggio luminoso che rischiara dubbi e nebbia, luce del cuore e dei desideri. Ma poi mi hanno fatto richieste bellissime: dal nome della persona amata alla parola cuore, dalla parola mare alla parola hakuna matata (che per chi non avesse visto il Re Leone significa “senza pensieri”). Ho progettato una personalizzazione con parole anche per oggetti di vetro: la prima è una sfera con la parola vorrei. Mi piace moltissimo perché lascia la nostalgia di tutto quello che in questo momento non ci è concesso ma che torneremo prima o poi ad abbracciare. -

Is this why some pieces are customizable?

- Of course, the new pendants are called Memento, a latin word that means memory. The texture is similar to that of a stone: I would like everyone to choose the word, the date, the name that is important to remember, impossible to forget, and write it indelibly. The first one I did was Luce, which besides being the name of my daughter and my favorite word: a ray of light that illuminates doubts and fog, light of the heart and desires. But then they made me beautiful requests: from the name of the loved one to the word heart, from the word sea to the word hakuna matata (which for those who have not seen the Lion King means "without thoughts"). I designed a personalization with words also for glass objects: the first is a sphere with the word vorrei. I like it very much because it leaves the nostalgia of everything that we are not allowed at this moment but that we will return sooner or later to embrace. -

Su cosa stai lavorando attualmente?

Al momento sto lavorando su un bellissimo progetto con Campomarzio70, un brand di profumi di altissima qualità per cui sto progettando un diffusore per ambiente in vetro borosilicato soffiato a mano. Sono tutti pezzi unici e la comunione tra il mondo di lusso attentissimo al dettaglio e al design del brand ben si sposa con il mio universo. Mi piacerebbe molto trovare altri interlocutori come brand o hotel per progettare oggetti e piccole installazioni ad hoc. Per quanto riguarda i gioielli sto disegnando una collezione legata all’idea di percorso, di progressione personale. Infine, dopo molto tempo, ho estratto dal cassetto alcuni disegni di volti che faccio dall’adolescenza. In realtà in quel periodo associavo a ciascun volto l’emozione che mi sembrava provasse. Al momento ho ricominciato invece a disegnar i volti delle donne che mi ispirano, che hanno trasformato attraverso impegno, dedizione e creatività una passione in lavoro. C’è Peggy Guggenheim e Lina Bo Bardi, Yoyoi Kusama e Coco Chanel ma anche India Mahdavi o Serena Confalonieri. -

What are you currently working on?

At the moment I am working on a beautiful project with Campomarzio70, a very high quality perfume brand for which I am designing a hand blown borosilicate glass home diffuser. They are all unique pieces and the communion between the world of luxury, very attentive to detail and the brand's design, goes well with my universe. I would very much like to find other interlocutors such as brands or hotels to design objects and small ad hoc installations. As for jewels, I am designing a collection linked to the idea of ​​a journey, of personal progression. Finally, after a long time, I extracted from the drawer some drawings of faces I have made since adolescence. In fact, at that time I associated each face with the emotion it seemed to feel. At the moment I have started again to draw the faces of the women who inspire me, who have transformed a passion into work through commitment, dedication and creativity. There is Peggy Guggenheim and Lina Bo Bardi, Yoyoi Kusama and Coco Chanel but also India Mahdavi or Serena Confalonieri. -

Come mai?

- Perché per noi designer indipendenti è un momento di trasforamazione complicatissimo e spero che scoprendo le storie delle donne forti che sono riuscite a creare stili ben definiti possa esser d’ispirazione alle altre. Alle contemporanee ho posto anche alcune domande e per esempio alcune di loro hanno confessato in un primo momento di aver fatto moltissimi sacrifici, di aver fatto tre lavori in una settimana, di aver venduto la macchina ma di averci creduto sempre e alla fine la convinzione, l’amore e la cura hanno pagato. -

Why?

- Because for us independent designers it is a very complicated moment of transformation and I hope that discovering the stories of strong women who have managed to create well-defined styles can inspire others. I also asked some questions to the contemporaries and for example some of them confessed at first to having made many sacrifices, having done three jobs in a week, having sold the car but always believed in it and in the end the conviction, love and care paid off. -

Progetti per il futuro?

- Sicuramente riuscire a trasportare questi volti su diverse superfici come la ceramica e moltiplicare le collaborazioni con altri brand interpretando per loro oggetti o piccole installazioni. Ho inoltre lavorato in collaborazione con Comieco per la creazione del workshop Paper Forest: con 22 bambini abbiamo creato una foresta di carta in carta e cartone riciclato lavorando sul concetto di sostenibilità. Vorrei continuare a lavorare con i bambini attuando processi creativi che abbiano messaggi virtuosi. -

Projects for the future?

- Surely being able to transport these faces on different surfaces such as ceramics and multiply collaborations with other brands by interpreting objects or small installations for them. I also worked in collaboration with Comieco for the creation of the Paper Forest workshop: with 22 children we created a paper forest in recycled paper and cardboard working on the concept of sustainability. I would like to continue working with children by implementing creative processes that have virtuous messages. -
