Il progetto di gioielleria contemporanea made in Milano, dapprima di nicchia e poi, grazie a un bracciale tanto particolare quanto minimale, riconosciuto in tutto il mondo. 22. Almost 23. These are the years that have passed since Viola Naj-Oleari and Marta Caffarelli founded Atelier VM. The contemporary jewelry project made in Milan, first of a niche and then, thanks to a bracelet as particular as it is minimal, recognized all over the world. Marta, Viola, Atelier VM nasce da una promessa fatta più di 20 fa, quella di “non aggiungere nulla di superfluo al mondo.” Ci avete visto lungo, visti i tempi che corrono? Mi riferisco non solo alla corsa al consumo ma anche al ridimensionamento, se c’è stato, dovuto alla pandemia. In 22 anni si cresce, si cambia. Come gestite il percorso personale rispetto alla crescita del vostro progetto?

- In un modo molto naturale e armonico: progetto e crescita personale si accompagnano e sostengono vicendevolmente da molti anni. -

Marta, Viola, Atelier VM was born from a promise made more than 20 years ago, that of “not adding anything superfluous to the world.” You were prophetic, given the current times? I am referring not only to the consumer race but also to the downsizing, if any, due to the pandemic. In 22 years we grow, we change. How do you manage your personal journey with respect to the growth of your project?

- In a very natural and harmonious way: project and personal growth have accompanied and supported each other for many years. -

Eppure i gioielli che realizzate non sembrano sentire il peso del tempo. Quali sono gli elementi essenziali - e non è una parola usata a caso - che li caratterizzano?

- Il carattere estremamente autentico e il pensiero originale dietro ad ogni creazione. Un vissuto sincero, questo dettaglio essenziale, per l’appunto, non passa mai di moda. -

Ci svelate i retroscena di com’è nato il braccialetto l’Essenziale nel 2014?

- Il bracciale saldato sul polso nasce nel 2014, ancora senza un nome, è l’urgenza di un’idea, quella di fissare un ricordo al corpo per non lasciarlo sfuggire. Un’idea risolutrice dal nome l’Essenziale. -

Can you reveal the background of how the l’Essenziale bracelet was born in 2014?

- The bracelet welded to the wrist was born in 2014, still without a name, it is the urgency of an idea, that of fixing a memory to the body so as not to let it escape. A solving idea called the Essenziale. -

Ogni pezzo è fatto a mano nel vostro laboratorio. E questo proprio per enfatizzare l’aspetto minimalista di ogni gioiello. Che rapporto avete con gli orafi e gli altri attori protagonisti del processo di creazione?

- Tutti i rapporti che abbiamo con i nostri più stretti collaboratori si basano sulla fiducia e l’affetto, può sembrare una banalità ma è vero. -

Each piece is handmade in your workshop. And this precisely to emphasize the minimalist aspect of each jewel. What relationship do you have with the goldsmiths and other protagonists of the creation process?

- All the relationships we have with our closest collaborators are based on trust and affection, it may seem trivial but it is true. -

È difficile parlare di creatività dopo più di 20 anni di Atelier VM o vi sentite ancora come se foste all’inizio, da questo punto di vista?

- No, non ci sentiamo all’inizio. Gli anni che abbiamo dedicato a questa impresa li sentiamo tutti, sono un tesoro inestimabile che guida e accompagna tutto quello che decidiamo di intraprendere, sia esso un un nuovo orecchino o un nuovo progetto, naturalmente non senza una buona dose di ironia e spensieratezza fondamentali per ogni passaggio. -

Is it difficult to talk about creativity after more than 20 years of Atelier VM or do you still feel like you were at the beginning, from this point of view?

- No, we don't feel at the beginning. We all feel the years we have dedicated to this enterprise, they are a priceless treasure that guides and accompanies everything we decide to undertake, be it a new earring or a new project, of course not without a good dose of irony and lightheartedness fundamental to every step. -

Sul vostro sito, rinnovato recentemente, parlate di poetica. A cosa vi riferite esattamente?

- Sempre a quel carattere di autenticità di cui parlavamo sopra che ispira e accompagna ogni gioiello, è la stessa poesia celata dentro ognuno di noi, un segno , un’impronta leggera e profonda allo stesso tempo, non un semplice ornamento. -

On your recently renovated website, you talk about poetics. What exactly are you referring to?

- Always to that character of authenticity we were talking about above that inspires and accompanies every jewel, is the same poetry hidden within each of us, a sign, a light and deep imprint at the same time, not a simple ornament. -

Avete anche inaugurato l’e-commerce. Per rispondere a quale esigenza?

- La realizzazione dell’e commerce è stata impegnativa , forse anche più dell’apertura di un nuovo punto vendita. Si è trattato di riprendere in mano tutti i nostri 22 anni, anzi 23 ormai, ripercorrerli con gli occhi di oggi ed estrarne un riepilogo che potesse comunicare con uno sguardo tutto quel vissuto potente. Ne siamo uscite soddisfatte e speriamo di essere riuscite nel nostro intento di donare al cliente virtuale un’esperienza al tempo stesso poetica, avvolgente ed essenziale. -

You have also inaugurated e-commerce. To meet what need?

- The creation of e-commerce was challenging, perhaps even more than opening a new store. It was a question of picking up all our 22 years, actually 23 now, retracing them with today's eyes and extracting a summary that could communicate all that powerful experience with a glance. We came out satisfied and we hope to have succeeded in our intent to give the virtual customer an experience that is poetic, enveloping and essential at the same time. -

Your story sees you collaborating with fashion houses and artists. What is it like to get out of your comfort zone?

- Any external influence, whether it is a person, a place or a new idea, has always been a source of great inspiration, so we welcome new stimuli and collaborations with pleasure. -
