La stessa sintonia che emerge tra i materiali, titanio e diamanti. Fonda Gi by Giselle Effting a Firenze, dove vive e ha il suo laboratorio. Ma l’orafa nasce in Brasile e solo dopo molti viaggi e luoghi esplorati, tra cui molto spesso l’Asia, decide di stabilirsi nella città del Rinascimento. Ed è da lì che racconta la sua storia.

It is memories that transform Giselle Effting's contemporary jewels into precious photographs. Memorabilia from the past totally revisited in the here and now, with techniques which blend manual work and technology in perfect balance. The same harmony that emerges between the materials, titanium and diamonds. She founds Gi by Giselle Effting in Florence, where she lives and has her own laboratory. But the goldsmith was born in Brazil and only after many travels and places explored, including Asia very often, did she decide to settle in the Renaissance city. And that's where she tells her story.

Giselle, il tuo primo gioiello è nato quando eri piccola sulle spiagge della tua terra, il Brasile. Ce lo racconti?

- Sì, esatto. Ricordo bene le passeggiate sulla spiaggia con mia mamma e mia sorella (ancora piccola). Raccoglievamo questo tipo di conchiglie chiamate Mollusco Fissurela. Sai, sono quelle che nascono già con un buchetto. Noi ne infilavamo molte su un cordino per costruire bracciali e collane. È un dolce ricordo della mia infanzia. -

Giselle, your first jewel was born when you were a young girl on the beaches of your land, Brazil. Can you tell us how was it?

- When I was a kid I have memories to walk on the beach with my mom and my sister (she was little), and we would collect this kind of shells called Fissurela Mollusk they come already with a little hole and we would add one against each other on a string to build bracelets and necklace. It is a sweet memory of my childhood. -

Poco più grande, poi, hai iniziato a girare per il mondo. Qual è il paese che più di tutti ti ha colpito?

- Quando facevo la modella ho vissuto in 9 paesi diversi, ma ho anche avuto l'opportunità di visitare moltissimi luoghi, che altrimenti non avrei potuto vedere con le sole vacanze. La città più memorabile è stata Hong Kong, dove ho vissuto 11 anni della mia vita. E ovviamente l'Italia che è stato il mio primo paese all’estero: ricordo la mia prima volta nel vostro paese, quando passeggiavo per Milano stupita dalla sua particolare bellezza. Ma Hong Kong, devo dire, si è rivelata speciale, mi ha catturata. Ho compiuto lì i miei 20 anni, ci ho vissuto per la maggior parte della mia vita adulta. Quella città è sempre viva, ricca di persone provenienti da tutto il mondo, c’è sempre qualcosa da fare. Mi sono semplicemente innamorata di ciò e della versatilità delle sue culture. I grattacieli in contrasto con il verde, lo stile di vita era molto divertente e socievole. -

From there then you started traveling around the world. Which is the country that most impressed you?

- When I was modelling I lived in 9 different countries, but I also had the opportunity to visit much more then that on holidays. For me the most memorable was Hong Kong, where I lived 11 years of my life. And of course Italy which was my first country abroad, I remember my first time in Italy I use to walk around Milano amazed with the beauty. But Hong Kong was special it just caught me for a while and I grown up my entire 20’s there most of my adulthood. The city is always happening, people are from everywhere around the world and things are always happening. I just felt in love with the phase the city has and versatility of cultures. The skyscrapers in contrast with the green, life style was very fun and social. -

Cosa c’è ancora oggi della cultura asiatica nelle tue creazioni?

- Sicuramente molto, anche e soprattutto a livello inconscio. Per esempio, ed è un’usanza locale, non farei mai una collana con 4 elementi perché 4 significa morte per loro. Mentre è possibile notare nelle mie creazioni, nei miei disegni, simboli come quello dell’infinito, il numero 8 o la forma della lettera S, a cui sono legata per via dei miei anni in cui facevo la modella, anche se non c’entra con la cultura locale ma è lì che ho svolto questo mestiere. L’infinito, comunque, è uno dei loro emblemi fortunati, anche il numero 8 lo è ed è connesso, come sappiamo, alla forma dell'infinito. Nei miei progetti puoi vedere alcuni di questi elementi a volte molto chiaramente, altre volte più impliciti, come la collana Inf8, sicuramente l'hairpiece Fora, infine, è ispirato alla classica forcina cinese, ed è un esempio piuttosto chiaro dei miei ricordi raccolti all’epoca. -

What is still there of asian culture in your creations today?

- Certainly a lot, also and above all on an unconscious level. For example, and it is a local custom, I would never make a necklace with 4 elements because 4 means death for them. While it is possible to notice in my creations, in my drawings, symbols such as that of infinity, the number 8 or the shape of the letter S, to which I am linked due to my years in which I was a model, even if it has nothing to do with it. with the local culture but that's where I did this job. The infinity, however, is one of their lucky emblems, even the number 8 is and is connected, as we know, to the form of infinity. In my projects you can see some of these elements sometimes very clearly, other times more implicit, such as the Inf8 necklace, surely the Fora hairpiece, finally, is inspired by the classic Chinese hairpin, and is a rather clear example of my memories collected at era. -

Infine Firenze, dove ti sei specializzata, tra le altre cose, in gioielleria presso la Alchimia Contemporary Jewelry School. A proposito di alchimia, è questo l’elemento che emerge nei tuoi gioielli e che vorresti si creasse con i tuoi clienti?

- Vorrei creare non solo un'opera d'arte da indossare per i miei clienti, ma anche una sensazione, un’emozione e uno stile. Sento che l'industria della gioielleria ha bisogno di un cambiamento, e di uno grande, per stare al passo con tutti i cambiamenti in corso nel nostro mondo, verso la nuova era. Alla scuola di Alchimia ho imparato a pensare fuori dagli schemi e vedere le cose in modo diverso, così da poter essere aperta a sperimentare su materiali disparati ed esplorare altre opzioni. Con i miei pezzi spero di evocare la consapevolezza in noi stessi per trarre la nostra forza. -

Then Florence, where you specialized, among other things, in jewelry at the Alchimia Contemporary Jewelry School. Speaking of alchemy, is this the element that emerges in your jewels and that you would like to create with your customers?

- I would like to create not just a wearable piece of art to my customers but also a feeling, a sensation and style. I feel the jewellery industry needs a change and a big one to keep it up with all the changes going around our world, to the new era. At Alchimia school I learned how to think outside the box and see things differently to be open to experiment on different materials and explore options. With my pieces I hope to evoke self awareness to remind our own strength. -

- Enigmatiche, misteriose e sensuali. -

What if you had to describe the creations in three adjectives?

- Enigmatic, mysterious and sensual. -

Una linea è anche unisex: quali sensazioni provi a vedere un uomo con un tuo pezzo?

- Mi sento onorata, credo che ci stiamo muovendo verso una società più aperta che enfatizzi l'empatia per tutti, indipendentemente da razza, genere, orientamento sessuale o credo. E desidero applicarla ai miei lavori. -

A line is also unisex: what sensations do you feel seeing a man with one of your pieces?

- I feel honoured, I believe we are moving towards a more open society emphasising empathy for all, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or creed. And I wish to apply that to my pieces. -

Ci descrivi il tuo atelier a Firenze?

- Il mio atelier è appena fuori Porta San Frediano vicino a Piazza Pier Vettori, è una zona fantastica e l'Oltrarno è il lato più cool della città. Qui ho lo spazio necessario per creare, circondata dai miei strumenti. È luminoso e spazioso. Ho i miei libri, computer, stampanti e anche tutti i miei strumenti per creare gioielli, ovviamente: quelli per la sabbiatura, la saldatura…. e il mio preferito, il forno con il quale creo da sempre i colori. -

Can you describe your atelier in Florence?

- My atelier is just outside Porta San Frediano near Piazza Pier Vettori, its a great area and Oltrarno is the coolest side of the city. Here I have space to create, I’m surrounded by my tools it is bright and spacious. I have my books, computers, printers and all my jewellery making tools as well of course: sandblasting, soldering…. and my favourite, the oven where I always make my colours myself. -

Titanio e stampa 3D, i due elementi chiave del tuo progetto. Come mai?

- Il titanio di cui mi sono e sento semplicemente innamorata, per me rappresenta l’umanità di oggi, con tutta la forza che abbiamo avuto in questi tempi difficili. Amo la leggerezza e i modi in cui può essere manipolato, le sfumature di colore e anche i suoi limiti. La stampa 3D è appena nata come soluzione su come sviluppare, ma non ho mai voluto perdere la sensazione della mano, per creare devo sentire il pezzo quindi prima lo realizzo a mano e poi lo scannerizzo in 3D e, se necessario, lo modifico un po' su Cad. Poi stampa di prova in resina e dopo stampa diretta in titanio. Ovviamente dopo c'è ancora molto lavoro da fare, nuovamente a mano. -

Titanium and 3D printing, the two key elements of your project. Why?

- Titanium I just feel in love with, for me it represents so much humanity nowdays, with all the strength we had during this hard times. I love the lightness and the ways it can be manipulated, colour change also the limitations. 3D printing just happened as a solution on how to develop, but I never wanted to loose the hand feel, for me to create I must feel the piece so I first make it by hand and then I 3D scan it and modify on cad a bit, test print in resin and after direct titanium printing. Of course after that there is still a lot of work to do by hand again. -

E poi ci sono i diamanti. Il punto luce è fondamentale? Perché?

- Premessa: il mio concetto è esplorare le forme certamente non convenzionali della struttura dei gioielli, le quali si traducono, in parte, nello stile di ognuno. Il colore grigio scuro che chiamo "nero carbone" e il grigio chiaro "bianco ghiaccio" sono stati scelti apposta per essere colori neutri in modo da poter essere abbinati a qualsiasi pezzo (pre)esistente. I diamanti, infine, donano gocce di luce al pezzo evocando eleganza, e assieme alla finitura opaca, la sua posatezza, creano un perfetto equilibrio. -

And then there are the diamonds. Is its light essential? Why?

- My concept is exploring the unconventional jewellery body shapes transforming into a part of ones personal style. Dark grey colour that I call ‘charcoal black’ and the light grey ‘ice white’ were picked on purpose to be neutral colours in order to be matched with any (pre)existing piece. The diamonds give drops of light to the piece evoking elegance and the mat finishing the settledness creating a perfect balance. -

- I’m working on an exclusive collection for a special gallery, still secret. -
