È il mondo di Giulia Lentini, orafa il cui laboratorio ha sede a Milano, città che l’accoglie dopo gli studi in oreficeria a Vicenza, dove è scattata la scintilla con la cera persa, tecnica da lei utilizzata per realizzare i suoi gioielli. Anche per clienti esigenti, curiosi. Unici come lei insomma. L’abbiamo incontrata e questa è la sua storia.

7 years of experiments, study and creative interpersonal relationships which constantly inspire her. It is the world of Giulia Lentini, a goldsmith whose workshop is based in Milan, the city that welcomes her after her goldsmith studies in Vicenza, where the spark with lost wax, a technique she used to make her jewels, took off. Giulia hai scoperto il mondo dei gioielli rovistando e giocando da piccola con quelli di tua madre e tua nonna, un po' come tutti?

- In parte sì. E fin da piccola, avrò avuto 8 o 9 anni, giocavo a realizzare bijoux con semilavorati: assemblavo catenine, chiusure, ciondoli e mi divertivo a farle vedere alle amiche della mamma o alle compagne di classe. -

Giulia you have discovered the world of jewels by rummaging and playing with baby with those of your mother and your grandmother, a bit like everyone?

- Partly yes. And since I was a child, I must have been 8 or 9 years old, I played making bijoux with semi-finished products: I assembled chains, clasps, pendants and I enjoyed showing them to my mother's friends or classmates. -

Hai studiato arte e poi, nel 2014, ti sei aperta al mondo dell'oreficeria. Come mai?

- In contemporanea agli ultimi due anni al liceo artistico, frequentavo un corso amatoriale serale di oreficeria una volta alla settimana che mi ha introdotto al mondo dei gioielli. A scuola abbiamo fatto un piccolo workshop di tecnica della cera persa e da lì è scoppiata la scintilla. -

You studied art and then, in 2014, you opened up to the world of goldsmithing. Why?

- At the same time as the last two years at the art school, I attended an evening amateur goldsmith course once a week which introduced me to the world of jewelry. At school we did a little lost wax workshop and from there the spark broke out. -

Consideri artistico quello che fai, quindi una sorta di conseguenza logica dei tuoi studi?

- Sì certo. Amo l'arte, in tutte le sue forme, e non potrei pensare a un lavoro che non la includa nella mia quotidianità. Penso inoltre che la gioielleria faccia parte delle arti e in generale considero l'artigianato, sotto ogni sua forma, un qualcosa di artistico. Per me lavorare con le mani è arte, così come lo è pensare e concepire gioielli per le persone: indaghi i loro gusti e li trasformi in materia. -

You consider what you do artistic, so some sort of consequence logic of your studies?

- Yes sure. I love art, in all its forms, and I couldn't think of a job that doesn't include it in my daily life. I also think that jewelry is part of the arts and in general I consider craftsmanship, in all its forms, something artistic. For me, working with my hands is art, as is thinking and designing jewels for people: you investigate their tastes and transform them into matter. -

Esiste, tra le tue creazioni, quella che ti ha fatto dire: "Ok, questo è quello che voglio e so fare"?

- Sì, quando ho iniziato a lavorare su pezzi più complessi e ho iniziato a pensare a una creazione dal punto di vista tecnico e alle emozioni che scaturiva piuttosto che dal punto di vista "commerciale". In poche parole mi lascio guidare dal mio gusto e dallo spirito creativo piuttosto che dall'oggetto o la forma che "vende di più", questo mi dà molta soddisfazione. -

There is, among your creations, the one that made you say: "Ok, this is it what I want and know how to do"?

- Yes, when I started working on more complex pieces and I started thinking about a creation from a technical point of view and the emotions that came out of it rather than from a "commercial" point of view. In short, I let myself be guided by my taste and creative spirit rather than by the object or shape that "sells the most", this gives me a lot of satisfaction. -

Hai studiato a Vicenza, città celebre del settore, mentre oggi vivi vicino a Milano. Se dovessi associare quest'ultima a una tua collezione, quale sarebbe?

- Forse la assocerei alla collezione Komorebi, la più recente. Mi ricorda tanto l'ultimo anno trascorso qui, vicino Milano, la volontà di rinascere e far entrare luce nuovamente nelle nuove vite. Ha forme un pochino "pungenti" e movimentate. Komorebi in giapponese è la luce che si fa spazio tra le fronde degli alberi per illuminare dove c'è ombra ed è stata la mia preghiera di rinascita dopo il 2020, quindi la associo ai posti che vivo tutti i giorni. -

You studied in Vicenza, a famous city in the sector, while you live today near Milan. If you were to associate the latter with one of your collections, what would it be?

- Perhaps I would associate it with the Komorebi collection, the most recent. It reminds me so much of the last year spent here, near Milan, the desire to be reborn and let light into new lives again. It has slightly "pungent" and lively shapes. Komorebi in Japanese is the light that makes its way between the branches of the trees to illuminate where there is shade and it was my prayer of rebirth after 2020, so I associate it with the places I live every day. -

Però nei tuoi pezzi ci sono riferimenti anche alle alghe, al mare. Come sono nati?

- Dal mio amore sconfinato per il mare, dal mistero degli abissi e la curiosità di esplorare il meraviglioso mondo sotto il livello del mare. Sono affascinata dalla vegetazione marina e passo parecchio tempo a ricercare piante e foto di questo mondo sommerso. -

But in your pieces there are also references to algae, to the sea. How were they born?

- From my boundless love for the sea, from the mystery of the abyss and the curiosity to explore the wonderful world below sea level. I am fascinated by marine vegetation and spend a lot of time researching plants and photos of this underwater world. -

Realizzi anche gioielli su misura: com'è vivi la relazione con il cliente?

- Amo molto interfacciarmi con i clienti che si rivolgono a me per un gioiello personalizzato. Cerco di soddisfare ogni loro desiderio e trasformarlo in metallo. I gioielli personalizzati sono un capitolo del mio lavoro a me molto caro e, anche se vorrei dire di sì a tutti, purtroppo non riesco a lavorare su più di tre o quattro gioielli personalizzati alla volta, quindi spesso le tempistiche sono molto lunghe. Il cliente ama poter personalizzare una creazione dall'inizio alla fine. Alcuni sono molto esigenti e attenti ad ogni minimo particolare, mentre altri lasciano più spazio alla mia creatività. -

You also make bespoke jewelry: how is your relationship with the customer?

- I really love interfacing with customers who come to me for a personalized jewel. I try to satisfy their every desire and turn it into metal. Personalized jewels are a chapter of my work that is very dear to me and, although I would like to say yes to everyone, unfortunately I am unable to work on more than three or four personalized jewels at a time, so the times are often very long. The customer loves being able to customize a creation from start to finish. Some are very demanding and attentive to every little detail, while others leave more room for my creativity. -

Con quale dei due ti trovi meglio?

- Imparo molte cose da entrambi. -

Which of the two are you better off with?

- I learn a lot from both. -

Hai un ricordo in particolare di lavoro su commissione che ti ha colpito e vuoi condividere?

- Ne ho diversi. I più importanti forse sono quelli che accompagnano i clienti nei passi importanti della loro vita: Fedi nunziali molto particolari con significati importanti. Regali di compleanno per mamme con accezioni intime. Gioielli che accompagnano spose all'altare. Mi piace quando le persone mi chiedono di dare un senso specifico alle pietre che andiamo a utilizzare o forme particolari, anche se astratte, che ricordino loro qualcosa. -

You have a particular memory of commissioned work that struck you and what do you want to share?

- I have several. Perhaps the most important are those who accompany clients in the important steps of their life: Very special wedding rings with important meanings. Birthday gifts for mothers with intimate meanings. Jewelery accompanying brides to the altar. I like when people ask me to give a specific meaning to the stones we are going to use or particular shapes, even if abstract, that remind them of something. -

Su cosa stai lavorando ora?

In questo periodo si sposano tutti! Tre anelli di proposta matrimonio, dei solitari un po' particolari. Poi tre coppie di fedi nunziali, anche queste poco convenzionali. -

What are you working on now?

During this time everyone gets married! Three rings of marriage proposal, solitaire a little 'particular. Then three pairs of wedding rings, also unconventional. -
