Giulio Xhaet
Giacca, camicia bianca in cotone e blue jeans. Si presenta così Giulio Xhaet al nostro appuntamento, alla conversazione organizzata per parlare del suo primo romanzo I Sogni di Martino Sterio (Mondadori Electa). Siamo a Milano, città che lo ha accolto qualche anno fa e nella quale lavora nei settori del digitale e della comunicazione. Xhaet, di origine belga-vallone, è infatti nato a Biella (Piemonte) nel 1980.
Martino Sterio trascorre la sua vita da studente universitario, insieme a un gruppo di amici, tra lezioni ed esami. A un certo punto della sua esistenza, sogni, o incubi - dipende dal punto di vista - si inseriscono nella sua routine, ogni notte. Puntuali, come l’orologio di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie (romanzo di Lewis Carroll, 1865), la cui storia emerge in un interessante intreccio, e gli altri protagonisti i gatti coinquilini, Camillo e Gourmandine, insieme ai pusillanimi e Sophie. Una volta letto si rimane piacevolmente interdetti, e straordinariamente (in)consapevoli - per citare una frase ricorrente - di aver appena concluso una storia inedita: dapprima perché è difficile trovare oggigiorno delle vicende raccontate in questo modo, con un linguaggio giovane ma acuto, e poi per via della costruzione stessa dell’opera, diversa dalle altre. Intervallata da canzoni, scritte da lui insieme alla band in cui suonava qualche anno fa, gli Ubik.

This is how Giulio Xhaet introduces himself to our appointment, to the conversation organized to talk about his first novel I Sogni di Martino Sterio (Mondadori Electa). We are in Milan, a city that welcomed him a few years ago and where he works in the digital and communication fields. Xhaet, of Belgian-Walloon origin, was in fact born in Biella (Piedmont) in 1980.
Martino Sterio spent his life as a university student, together with a group of friends, between classes and exams. At some point in his life, dreams, or nightmares - depends on the point of view - fit into his routine, every night. Punctual, like the clock of Alice in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll's novel, 1865), whose story emerges in an interesting plot, and the other protagonists are the roommate cats, Camillo and Gourmandine, along with the pusillanimous and Sophie. Once read, one remains pleasantly baffled, and extraordinarily (in)aware - to quote a recurring phrase - of having just concluded a one of a kind story: first because it is difficult today to find events told in this way, with a young but acute language, and then because of the construction of the work itself, different from the others. Intervaled by songs, written by him along with the band he played a few years ago, the Ubik.
Giulio, quando hai iniziato a scrivere I Sogni di Martino Sterio e perché proprio la scrittura come strumento per esprimerti?
- Nel 2003 e l’ho finito qualche tempo fa. Ho scelto di scrivere per via di un’esigenza creativa. Prima di I Sogni scrivevo racconti e nel mentre anche delle canzoni, testi. Si è trattato di uno sfogo e anche oggi, se non faccio qualcosa di creativo per un po’ di tempo provo come una sensazione di malessere. Inoltre, volevo mettermi alla prova dopo aver già scritto qualche cosa in precedenza. Così ho tentato di mettere insieme i pezzi del puzzle in qualcosa di più strutturato ed è nato il romanzo. E poi, per me è un sogno che si realizza vedere il mio libro stampato e rilegato in uno scaffale della libreria. -
Giulio, when did you start writing I Sogni di Martino Sterio and why writing as a tool to express yourself?
- In 2003 and I finished it some time ago. I chose to write because of a creative need. Before I Sogni I wrote stories and in the meantime also some songs, texts. It was an outburst and even today, if I do not do something creative for a while, I feel like I'm feeling sick. Also, I wanted to test myself after writing something previously. So I tried to put together the pieces of the puzzle in something more structured and the novel was born. And then, for me it is a dream that comes true to see my book printed and bound in a bookcase shelf. -
Anche Martino, il protagonista, prova un malessere, dovuto anche al suo passato, il quale comprende il suicidio del padre e un rapporto con la madre non sempre idilliaco. E poi lo definisci un pusillanime. Com’è nato questo personaggio e, inoltre, rintracci un’affinità con il suo disagio, nel momento in cui hai iniziato a scrivere di lui?
- Si è vero, lo definisco con questa parola, che uso spesso nella mia quotidianità. Mi trovo a mio agio sul nostro disagio, perché ci sono effettivamente dei parallelismi a livello psicologico e caratteriale. Di Sensazioni. Non è infatti un romanzo autobiografico. Ciò che lega me e lui è l’empatia. Martino ero io quindici anni fa. -
Even Martino, the protagonist, feels a malaise, also due to his past, which includes the suicide of his father and a relationship with his mother that is not always perfect. And then you call it a pusillanime. How was this character born and, more, have you traced an affinity with his discomfort, during the moment you started writing about him?
- It is true, I define him with this word, which I often use in my daily life. I am at ease with our discomfort, because there are indeed parallels on the psychological and character level. Of sensations. It is not in fact an autobiographical novel. What binds me and him is empathy. Martino was me fifteen years ago. -

Lui è piuttosto abitudinario, quasi ossessivo, su alcuni aspetti, che descrivi nel dettaglio, come ad esempio quello di farsi il bagno (tassativamente mai la doccia) una volta alla settimana. Come mai questa scelta?
- Si ho voluto estremizzare un po’. Mi piace farlo perché immagino il lettore che si diverte. All’inizio provo a scrivere qualcosa di serio e poi penso di inserire anche cose sciocche, delle battute. Mi viene spesso la voglia di scherzare e di avere dei personaggi un po’ naif. Con tutti i distinguo del caso: ad esempio Zerocalcare è uno che ha un malessere dentro ma la butta sempre sull’ironia, ai massimi livelli. Inoltre volevo prendere un po’ in giro me stesso e la mia generazione, che si prende troppo sul serio, aspetto che non apprezzo molto. -
He is rather habitual, almost obsessive, on some aspects, which you describe in detail, such as to take a bath (absolutely never a shower) once a week. Why this choice?
- Yes, I wanted to exaggerate a bit. I like doing it because I imagine the reader having fun. At the beginning I try to write something serious and then I think of also to include silly things, jokes. I often feel the need to joke and have some naive characters. With all the distinctions: for example, Zerocalcare is one who has a discomfort inside but always throws it on irony, at the highest levels. I also wanted to get around myself and my generation, which takes itself too seriously, aspect that I do not really appreciate. -
Descrivi i diversi personaggi attraverso i sette peccati capitali. Perché?
- Per me sono una fissazione. Diciamo che ci sono alcune cose del passato profondamente pop - come Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie - che mi affascinano particolarmente. Ad ogni modo è per questo che ho deciso di descriverli così. Un giorno mi è venuta l’idea ed essendo io un anti-eroe, invece di farlo attraverso le loro virtù, o attraverso delle caratteristiche positive e negative, mi è sembrato divertente farlo così. -
You describe the different characters through the seven deadly sins. Why?
- For me they are a fixation. Let's say there are some things from the past that are deeply pop - like Alice in Wonderland - that particularly fascinate me. In any case, that's why I decided to describe them like this. One day I got the idea and being an anti-hero, instead of doing it through their virtues, or through positive and negative characteristics, it seemed fun to do it like that. -
Pensi che ognuno di noi possa essere rappresentato così, o è un lusso riservato ai soggetti di un romanzo?
- Assolutamente sì. Anzi, dovremmo aggiornarli, crearne di nuovi. -
Do you think that each of us can be represented this way, or is it a thing reserved for the subjects of a novel?
- Absolutely yes. Indeed, we should update them, create new ones. -
I tuoi vivono nell’epoca dei telefoni cellulari con le cover intercambiabili. Non è un’opera adattata al 2018 e alle sue tecnologie. Eppure lavori in campo digitale oggi. Come mai questa scelta?
- In parte perché quando ho iniziato a scriverlo non c’erano ancora i social e i dispositivi attuali, appunto digitali. E poi in quel periodo ero anti-digitale, in modo piuttosto radicale. Oggi, nonostante sia il mio lavoro, che svolgo con passione, ho deciso di non inserire questo aspetto nel romanzo. Studio e spiego il mondo contemporaneo da questo punto di vista, ma provo una certa nostalgia per il passato e il suo essere analogico. Il mondo di oggi è diverso e non è facile conviverci. Le persone frenetiche ci navigano bene, mentre quelle a cui piace assaggiare la vita con più calma e in modo riflessivo, si ritrovano un po’ disturbate da questo zeitgeist. Mi piace questa parola. Ecco perché sono presente sui social, ma ultimamente provo una sorta di rigetto nei loro confronti: tutti ti taggano, scrivono. Sono piuttosto lento su queste cose, forse. -
Yours live in the era of cell phones with interchangeable covers. It is not a work adapted to 2018 and its technologies. Yet, you work in the digital field today. Why this choice?
- Partly because when I started writing it, there were not even social and current devices, or digital. And then at that time I was anti-digital, quite radically. Today, despite my work, which I carry out with passion, I decided not to include this aspect in the novel. I study and explain the contemporary world from this point of view, but I feel a certain nostalgia for the past and its analogical being. Today's world is different and it is not easy to live with it. Frantic people sail it well, while those who like to taste life more calmly and thoughtfully, find themselves a bit disturbed by this zeitgeist. I like this word. That's why I'm present on social media, but lately I feel a sort of rejection towards them: everyone tags you, comments. I'm rather slow on these things, maybe. -
Il rapporto tra Martino, Sophie, Giulia, Pit, Evia e Filippo è molto organico, fisico, se vuoi. Non mandano un whatsapp per invitarsi a cena da qualcuno ma ci vanno e basta perché sanno che saranno accolti o che l’amico si è ricordato di organizzarla. Ora è tutto diverso. In quale misura il digitale ha guidato il cambiamento delle relazioni umane?
- Il digitale ha cambiato tantissimo il modo di vivere la quotidianità, molto di più di qualsiasi altra tecnologia inventata prima. La mia generazione viene da un mondo analogico, che al massimo iniziava a digitalizzarsi. Oggi vivo in un altro mondo, dove sono un vecchio per i ragazzi di quindici anni e un ragazzino per i manager. È un po’ schizofrenico il mondo in cui viviamo. -
The relationship between Martino, Sophie, Giulia, Pit, Evia and Filippo is very organic, physical, if you want. They do not send a whatsapp to invite someone to dinner but they just go there because they know that they will be welcomed or that the friend has remembered to organize it. Now everything is different. To what extent has digital driven the change in human relationships?
- Digital has changed a lot the way we live everyday life, much more than any other technology invented before. My generation comes from an analogical world, which at most began to digitize itself. Today I live in another world, where I am an old man for fifteen-year-old people and a young boy for managers. The world in which we live is a bit schizophrenic. -
Si comporterebbero in modo diverso se avessi ambientato le loro vicende oggi?
- Penso di sì, ma perché l’autore è diverso, vive in un’epoca privata della possibilità di fermarsi un attimo e pensare. Oggi si scrive in maniera più frettolosa. Martino sarebbe stato più frettoloso, forse. -
Would they behave differently if you had set their events today?
- I think so, but because the author is different, he lives in an age that is losing the possibility of stopping for a moment and thinking. Today you write more hastily. Martino would have been more hurried, maybe. -
I personaggi del romanzo
Credi che avrebbe superato allo stesso modo la morte del padre, uomo che, se mi permetti, pare proprio rispecchiare la condizione che vivono nello nostro zeitgeist - come dici tu - molti nostri coetanei, ossia quella di vivere la vita che pensi sia giusto portare avanti, anziché perseguire la propria arte?
- Il padre era una persona debole, che non giustifico in quanto egoista, anche se gli si vuole bene. Penso sia possibile combattere quella condizione, che è la nostra, anche se è difficile. Le persone che non mi piacciono sono quelle che non provano a cambiare. Tanti di noi non sono contenti, solo che alcuni, i più, scelgono il percorso più facile, lamentarsi. Altri, pochi, si sforzano per regalarsi un’esistenza migliore. A me piace molto il momento all’interno del romanzo in cui c’è la voce che dice a Martino: “alzati pivello, o altrimenti prendi calci in culo”. Secondo me quella è una cosa giusta, ed è così che lui la supera, in un certo senso. Oggi forse è più complicato. Credo che colui che sta bene con se stesso nel presente è perché è stato male in passato ed è riuscito a cambiare. -
Do you believe that he would have survived the same way the death of his father, a man who, if you allow me, seems to reflect the condition that live in our zeitgeist - as you say - many of our peers, that of living the life you think is right to bring forward, rather than pursuing your own art?
- The father was a weak person, who I do not justify because he was a selfish, even if you finished to love him. I think it is possible to fight that condition, which is ours, even if it is difficult. People I do not like are those who do not try to change. Many of us are not happy, only some, the more, choose the easiest path, to complain. Others, few, strive to give themselves a better life. I really like the moment in the novel in which there is the voice that says to Martino: “get up brood, or otherwise I’ll kick your ass”. I think that's a good thing, and that's how he surpasses it, in a way. Today perhaps it is more complicated. I believe that he who is comfortable with himself in the present is because he was bad in the past and managed to change. -
Una volta finito il libro ho provato la sensazione che tu abbia letto parecchio nella vita. Ti risulta?
- Non ho letto tantissimo, in realtà. Ho parecchie lacune e non mi reputo un intellettuale. Però c’è una cosa: visto che sono un po’ nerd-ossessivo, quando c’è un libro che mi piace, lo leggo, lo scandaglio e voglio che mi sia utile. So che utilità e bellezza possono sembrare agli antipodi ma, a me, una cosa che apprezzo deve anche tornarmi utile. Quindi da anni sottolineo ciò che mi interessa di uno scritto - dal manuale su qualche cosa a un romanzo - e riscrivo la frase su dei file, archiviandola. Ecco perché, forse, hai avuto quella sensazione. In effetti in I Sogni ci sono tante citazioni. -
Once I finished the book, I felt that you have read a lot in life. Do you agree?
- I did not read a lot, actually. I have several gaps and I do not consider myself an intellectual. But there is one thing: since I'm a bit nerd-obsessive, when there is a book that I like, I read it, investigate it and I want it to be useful. I know that utility and beauty may seem to be poles apart but, to me, one thing I appreciate must also come in handy. So for years I have underlined - and I still do it - what interests me of a writing - from the manual about something to a novel - and I rewrite the sentence on files, storing it. That's why, maybe, you had that feeling. In fact in I Sogni there are many quotes. -
Continui a scrivere Giulio?
- Sì. Un romanzo, da circa otto anni. L’ho cominciato quando ancora dovevo terminare questo. Il punto è che fatico a trovare del tempo. Sono cresciuto, purtroppo, e lavoro molto. Inoltre scrivo altri libri, sul digitale. Mi piacerebbe, a questo proposito, scrivere una trilogia sui social media, un po’ all’Arancia Meccanica (romanzo di Anthony Burgess del 1962). Tra qualche anno, vedremo.
Do you keep writing Giulio?
- Yes. A novel, since about eight years. I started it when I still had to finish this. The point is that I struggle to find time. I grew up, unfortunately, and I work a lot. I also write other books, on the digital. In this regard, I would like to write a trilogy on social media, a bit like A Clockwork Orange (novel by Anthony Burgess,1962). In a few years, we'll see.
