- Il Mediterraneo è un immenso archivio e un profondo sepolcro -. È con questa frase-manifesto dell’autore bosniaco Predrag Matvejević, contenuta all’interno del suo Breviario Mediterraneo (Garzanti), scomparso il 2 febbraio di quest’anno, che Photoluxfestival inaugurerà la sua terza edizione, a partire dal 18 novembre fino al 10 dicembre in varie sedi all’interno della città toscana di Lucca. La Biennale Internazionale di Fotografia, come tutti gli eventi culturali di importanti dimensioni, ospiterà in mostra grandi nomi del panorama fotografico internazionale e nazionale, molti talk, workshop e concorsi, dedicati ai giovani artisti dell’obiettivo che saranno premiati da importanti protagonisti del settore, come Leica, ceiba editions e il magazine EyesOpen!. Non mancheranno infine gli eventi collaterali. Tra tutte queste esperienze diverse, scorrerà un unico filo che le vede accomunate: il mare nostrum. Ma procediamo con ordine.
- The Mediterranean is an immense archive and a deep sepulcher -. It is with this manifesto of bosnian author Predrag Matvejević, contained within its Breviario Mediterraneo (Garzanti), which disappeared on february 2 this year, that Photoluxfestival will inaugurate its third edition, from November 18 to December 10, in various locations within the Tuscan town of Lucca. The International Photography Biennale, like all major cultural events, will host great names in the international and national panorama, many talk, workshops and contests, dedicated to young target artists who will be awarded by leading protagonists in the industry such as Leica, ceiba editions and the EyesOpen! magazine. Finally, side events will not be missed. Among all these different experiences, it will scroll through a single thread that sees them united: the mare nostrum. But let's proceed with order.

Tra le 22 mostre in scena è importante segnalare Vestiges di Josef Koudelka, in collaborazione con Magnum Photos, che si terrà a Palazzo Ducale, Cortile Carrara 1 . Si tratta di un itinerario per immagini che il fotografo Cecoslovacco ha realizzato in diciannove paesi del Mediterraneo tra il 1991 e il 2012, focalizzandosi su più di duecento siti archeologici greci e romani. L’obiettivo di Koudelka, durante questo viaggio, era di cogliere l’essenza di quei luoghi, attraverso la ricerca di una rappresentazione perfetta che li definisse al meglio, in tutta la loro maestosità.
Come non citare l’evento Maroc dedicato all’iconico fotografo Albert Watson, allestito presso Villa Bottini, via Elisa 9 e a cura di Enrico Stefanelli, in collaborazione con la Kahmann Gallery di Amsterdam. - In Scozia, quando sono nato, c’era l’acqua ovunque. Cadeva dalle montagne e dalle colline in valli sconfinate, formando centinaia di laghi. La pioggia sembrava sempre presente, qualche volte soffice e calda, altre volte dura e fredda. Per una persona cresciuta in questo ambiente, il Marocco arriva come uno shock. All’inizio ogni singolo dettaglio sembra diverso: i colori, le persone, i riti religiosi, l’architettura, e certo, il tempo. -. Con questo estratto preso da un testo scritto dallo stesso creatore d’immagini scozzese, si spiega la motivazione che ha portato gli organizzatori di Photoluxfestival a pensare al Mediterraneo come tema protagonista di questa stagione: è un territorio così particolare che in certe regioni si manifesta con profumi, odori, linguaggi e storie di un certo tipo e, una volta passato il confine - che sia a nord, sud, est od ovest - stravolge completamente i sensi acquisiti in precedenza, a cui si era abituati.
Among the 22 shows it is important to report Josef Koudelka's Vestiges, in collaboration with Magnum Photos, to be held at Palazzo Ducale, Cortile Carrara 1. This is an itinerary for images that Czechoslovak photographer has made in nineteen Mediterranean countries between 1991 and 2012, focusing on more than two hundred greek and roman archaeological sites. Koudelka's goal during this trip was to seize the essence of those places through the search for a perfect representation that best defines them in all their majesty.
Not to mention the Maroc exhibition dedicated to the iconic photographer Albert Watson, set up at Villa Bottini, via Elisa 9 and curated by Enrico Stefanelli, in collaboration with the Kahmann Gallery in Amsterdam. - In Scotland, when I was born, there was water everywhere. With this extract taken from a text written by the same scottish images creator, explains the motivation that led the organizers of Photoluxfestival to think of the Mediterranean as the main theme of this season: it is such a special territory that in certain regions manifests itself with perfumes, odors, languages and stories of a certain type, and once crossed the border - that is to the north, south, east or west - completely overwhelms the previously acquired senses, which you had become accustomed to.

Irrompe l’attualità nella mostra collettiva I-ΣMIGRAZIONI, a cura di Flavio Arensi, Chiara dell’Olio, Chiara Ruberti e, di nuovo, Enrico Stefanelli, che avrà luogo anch’essa a Palazzo Ducale. Attraverso una selezione di fotografie, video, installazioni, dipinti e sculture il pubblico potrà approfondire uno dei temi più dibattuti degli ultimi anni e sicuramente centrale nella storia recente del bacino del Mediterraneo. Molto importante è il supporto all’esibizione da parte del glossario Carta di Roma (allegato 3 dell’Ordine dei Giornalisti): uno strumento ulteriore per il pubblico per approfondire e comprendere la corretta terminologia legata ai temi della migrazione, spesso utilizzata a sproposito dagli stessi giornalisti. Durante la conferenza stampa, Giovanni Rossi, che fa parte dell’Associazione Carta di Roma, ha dichiarato: - Il Mediterraneo è un mare di morte. Oggi sono più di 2.000 i deceduti e il 70% dei minori che percorrono quella tratta (dall’Africa all’Italia, ndr) sono abusati. È doveroso e rispettoso, quindi, chiamare le cose con il loro esatto nome -. A inaugurare il percorso per immagini sarà l’opera La porta dei migranti di Mimmo Palladino, alla quale seguiranno quelle di molti fotografi tra cui gli italiani Gianni Berengo Gardin, Pietro Ruffo, Stefano Cozzi e Salvatore Licitra (nipote fi Gio Ponti), che ha elaborato un’opera sul tema delle impronte digitali.
Per la prima volta in Italia arriva Shai Kremer con la mostra World Trade Center: concrete abstract, a cura di Gigliola Foschi, presso l’ex-Cavallerizza, Piazzale Giuseppe Verdi. Le immagini dell’artista israeliano sono il risultato figurativo di una riflessione sullo scorrere del tempo e sulle ricordanze con l’obiettivo di valorizzare l’elemento della memoria. Questo percorso fotografico è nato dalla documentazione (iniziata nel 2001 e conclusa nel 2012) sulla ricostruzione del sito dove sorgevano le torri gemelle, abbattute l’11 settembre del 2001.
Al Festival della Luce di Lucca, farà tappa anche World Press Photo 2017, presso la Chiesa di San Cristoforo, via Fillungo, 6 con l’ormai famosa immagine vincitrice della 60esima ediizione scattata dal fotografo turco Burhan Ozblici che ritrae Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, l’attentatore dell’ambasciatore russo in Turchia, Andrei Karlov, dopo l’omicidio del 19 dicembre 2016, in una galleria d’arte ad Ankara.
It breaks the news the collective exhibition I-ΣMIGRAZIONI, edited by Flavio Arensi, Chiara dell'Olio, Chiara Ruberti and, again, Enrico Stefanelli, which will also take place at Palazzo Ducale. Very important is the support of the glossario Carta di Roma (Appendix 3 of the Ordine dei Giornalisti): a further tool for the public to deepen and understand the correct terminology related to the themes of migration, often used badly by journalists themselvs. During the press conference, Giovanni Rossi, who is part of the Carta di Roma Association, said: - The Mediterranean is a sea of death. Today there are more than 2,000 deceased and 70% of the children traveling that route (from Africa to Italy, en.) are abused. For the first time in Italy comes Shai Kremer with the World Trade Center exhibition: concrete abstract, edited by Gigliola Foschi, held at the ex-Cavallerizza, Piazzale Giuseppe Verdi. The images of the israeli artist are the figurative result of a reflection on the flow of time and remembrance with the aim of enhancing the element of memory. This photographic journey originated from the documentation (begun in 2001 and ended in 2012) on the reconstruction of the site where the twin towers were built, cut off on september 11, 2001.
At the Festival della Luce of Lucca, World Press Photo 2017 will also take place at the Church of San Cristoforo, via Fillungo 6 with the now famous image winner of the 60th edition by the Turkish photographer Burhan Ozblici portraying Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, killer of the russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, after the murder on december 19, 2016, in an art gallery in Ankara.

Spazio ai giovani. Andranno in mostra presso la Chiesa dei Servi, Piazza dei servi le fotografie dei dieci finalisti del Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2017 insieme a quelle dei vincitori: il norvegese Terje Abusdal con il progetto a lungo termine Slash & Burn e l’ucraino Sergey Melnitchenko con la serie Behind the Scenes, che trionfa nella categoria under 25. Ancora a Palazzo Ducale, si terrà la proiezione dei progetti finalisti del Prix Pictet 2017, dove spicca la serie Heat Maps del vincitore di quest’ultima edizione Richard Mosse, il quale ha rappresentato la più grande crisi dei migranti all’interno della macchia mediterranea, causata dalle guerre, dalle persecuzioni ma anche dai repentini cambiamenti climatici.
Protagoniste saranno infine le opere dei partecipanti ai concorsi Photolux award 2017, Young Curators Photolux Contest 2017 - concorso internazionale dedicato a giovani curatori di età compresa tra i 22 e i 40 anni - Intarget Photolux Award 2017 e PhotoBook Award 2017, i cui vincitori saranno presenti nel corso di un talk il 25 novembre.

The Chiesa dei Servi, Piazza dei servi, will hosts photographs of the ten finalists of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2017 along with those of the winners: norwegian Terje Abusdal with the long-term project Slash & Burn and the ukrainian Sergey Melnitchenko with the Behind the Scenes series, which triumphs under the category under 25. Again at Palazzo Ducale, will be screened the finalist projects of the Prix Pictet 2017, featuring the Heat Maps series of the winner of this last edition Richard Mosse, who represented the greatest crisis of migrants within the Mediterranean slander, caused by wars, persecutions, but also by sudden climate change.
Photolux Award 2017, Young Curators Photolux Contest 2017 - an international competition dedicated to young curators aged 22 to 40 - Intarget Photolux Award 2017 and PhotoBook Award 2017, whose winners will be attended by a talk on 25 November, will be host their participants photographic works.

Con questo programma, con tali nomi, dunque, con grandi aspettative, Photolucfestival 2017 si annuncia essere proprio come Breviario Mediterraneo di Matvejević, cioè esso stesso una fotografia di tante eterogenee rappresentazioni del Mediterraneo. Il mare della nostra cultura, della nostra vita.
With this program, with such names, so, with great expectations, Photolucfestival 2017 is announced to be just like Matvejević's Breviario Mediterraneo, which is itself a photograph of so many heterogeneous representations of the Mediterranean. The sea of our culture, of our lives.
