Una vacanza può cambiare il percorso di vita di una persona? Alice Sambenati, designer di gioielli italo-venezuelana, lo crede fortemente. Perché le è capitato, dopo un viaggio in Liguria di poter scoprire la sua vena creativa, rivolta verso il mondo dei bijoux, e di abbandonare un lavoro che non la soddisfaceva fino in fondo. E così, prototipo dopo prototipo, collezione dopo collezione - realizzata grazie al supporto dei suoi artigiani romani -, trova la sua strada e fonda il suo eponimo brand nel 2013. In particolare, il debutto è avvenuto con l’anello Ape, il cui successo è stato tale che viene realizzato ancora oggi in atelier. Per lei un’emozione, la stessa che prova ricordando e raccontando la sua infanzia.

Can a vacation change a person's life path? Alice Sambenati, an Italian-Venezuelan jewelry designer, strongly believes this. Because it happened to her, after a trip to Liguria, to be able to discover her creative vein, turned towards the world of bijoux, and to give up a job that didn't completely satisfy her. And so, prototype after prototype, collection after collection - made thanks to the support of her roman artisans -, she found her way and founded her eponymous brand in 2013. In particular, the debut took place with the Ape ring, whose success it was such that it is still made today in the atelier. An emotion for her, the same one she feels when remembering and recounting her childhood.

Alice, esiste un gioiello legato alla tua infanzia di cui porti ancora il ricordo?

- In realtà più che un singolo gioiello, alla mia infanzia associo la sensazione di attrazione e l'eccitazione che provavo nell'entrare nella nostra gioielleria di famiglia. Ero circondata da tutto quel sbrilluccichio dietro le vetrine e cassetti pieni di oggetti preziosi che curiosa come sono, non riuscivo a non aprire.Se poi dovessi pensare a un singolo pezzo, durante la mia adolescenza vidi mia zia disegnare degli anelli con le perle, perle avvolte da nastri ricoperti di pietre preziose. Li trovavo bellissimi ma ancora più bello è stato vedere la sua evoluzione, un'idea che veniva realizzata e proposta ad altre persone. -

Alice, there is a jewel linked to your childhood that you still carry the memory?

- In reality, more than a single jewel, I associate with my childhood the feeling of attraction and the excitement I felt when entering our family jewelry store. I was surrounded by all that glitter behind the shop windows and drawers full of precious objects that curious as I am, I could not help but open. wrapped in ribbons covered with precious stones. I found them beautiful but even more beautiful was to see its evolution, an idea that was realized and proposed to other people. -

Lo possiedi ancora?

- Uno di quei pezzi mi fu regalato e ovviamente lo conservo ancora. Chissà forse un giorno riuscirò a reinterpretarlo a modo mio e farà parte di una futura collezione. -

Do you still own it?

- One of those pieces was given to me and of course I still keep it. Who knows maybe one day I will be able to reinterpret it in my own way and it will be part of a future collection. -

La prima creazione che ti ha convinta a intraprendere un percorso come designer e imprenditrice è l'anello Ape, giusto?

- L’anello Ape non fu il primo pezzo che realizzai, ma divenne sì, esatto, da subito il più emblematico e il primo ad esserlo. Sono molto affezionata a lui, un pò perché mi rappresenta con la sua semplicità, il suo essere romantico ed ironico allo stesso tempo, un pò perché fu quello che mi diede la conferma che le mie idee venivano apprezzate da altre persone, che stavo dando vita al desiderio di un oggetto che a sua volta era desiderio di altri. Ogni tanto mi sento chiamare: "la ragazza dell'anello Ape". -

The first creation that convinced you to take a path like designer and entrepreneur is the Ape (bee) ring, right?

- The Ape ring was not the first piece I made, but it became, yes, exactly, immediately the most emblematic and the first to be. I am very fond of him, partly because he represents me with his simplicity, his being romantic and ironic at the same time, partly because he was the one who gave me the confirmation that my ideas were appreciated by other people, that I was giving life to the desire for an object which in turn was the desire of others. Every now and then I hear myself called: "the girl of the Ape ring". -

Eppure, la prima volta che ci siamo incontrate mi hai detto che è stato a Ventimiglia che hai preso fiducia.

- L’estate dei miei 27 anni decisi di dimettermi dallo studio di architettura nel quale stavo lavorando. Mi piaceva il mio lavoro ma forse non tanto da mettere tutto in discussione. Poi quell'estate iniziai a fare le prime piccole creazioni, ebbero un discreto successo e decisi una volta tornata a Roma di intraprendere questa strada. Non fu facile inizialmente, non sapevo se sarebbe stato giusto lasciarmi alle spalle gli studi di architettura e il lavoro compiuto, ma dovevo provarci. Quell'estate Ventimiglia e mia zia, furono sicuramente il primo anello di una catena che è in costante evoluzione. -

Still, the first time we met you told me it was in Ventimiglia that you have taken confidence.

- In the summer of my 27 years, I decided to resign from the architecture studio where I was working. I liked my job but maybe not so much that I questioned everything. Then that summer I started making the first small creations, they were quite successful and once back in Rome I decided to take this path. It wasn't easy at first, I didn't know if it would be right to leave behind my architectural studies and the work done, but I had to try. That summer Ventimiglia and my aunt were certainly the first link in a chain that is constantly evolving. -

Disegni e poi artigiani italiani realizzano i tuoi pezzi: è difficile trovare orafi oggigiorno?

- Disegno a mano e provo a plasmare con le mie mani la cera per dare forma ai miei pensieri, non sempre ci riesco, ma ho il mio orafo di fiducia che da sempre mi dà una mano. Sono 10 anni che lavoriamo insieme. Sandro mi ha insegnato tantissimo, devo molto a lui. Si è sempre mostrato un gran lavoratore, onesto, preciso, con grande cura per i dettagli ( ci tengo a precisare che sono una pignola) e soprattutto molta pazienza per le mie richieste fatte in tempi brevissimi a orari stranissimi. -

Drawings and then Italian artisans make your pieces: it's difficult to find goldsmiths nowadays?

- I draw by hand and try to mold the wax with my hands to give shape to my thoughts, I don't always succeed, but I have my trusted goldsmith who has always given me a hand. We have been working together for 10 years. Sandro taught me a lot, I owe a lot to him. He has always shown himself to be a hard worker, honest, precise, with great attention to detail (I want to clarify that I am a fussy eater) and above all a lot of patience for my requests made in a very short time at very strange times. -

Sei nata in Venezuela, ma vivi da molto tempo a Roma: sono due luoghi che?

- La mia famiglia è di origine Italiana e io sono l'unica nata e cresciuta in Venezuela fino a 18 anni. È il mio paese, la mia terra a cui sono legatissima. Il mio modo di essere, di pensare è originario di lì.

Roma rappresenta la mia seconda vita, non mi sento romana ma la amo come città. Ogni volta che vedo un turista penso: che fantastica vacanza starà facendo qui, beato lui. Poi mi rendo conto che io qui ci abito e sono fortunatissima, fortunata come quel turista. -

You were born in Venezuela, but you have lived in Rome for a long time: they are two places that?

- My family is of Italian origin and I am the only one born and raised in Venezuela up to 18 years. It is my country, my land to which I am very attached. My way of being, of thinking originates from there.

Rome represents my second life, I don't feel Roman but I love it as a city. Whenever I see a tourist I think: what a fantastic vacation he is having here, lucky him. Then I realize that I live here and I am very lucky, lucky like that tourist. -

E t'ispirano, in qualche modo?

- Credo che il Venezuela nelle mie creazioni si legga soprattutto nella collezione Let it bee e in quella Little wild things, non solo per il richiamo alla natura quanto per le forme morbide delle linee, per la parte più selvaggia e disordinata di me. Queste linee però, soprattutto nelle ultime collezioni, sono anche molto pulite, geometriche, minimal e per me sono il risultato di ciò che assorbo da Roma. Sono entrambe due realtà diverse ma che coesistono in me, anche inconsciamente, non saprei dirti esattamente cosa mi da una e cosa l'altra, ma sono sicura che tutto ciò che ci circonda sia per noi fonte costante di ispirazione. -

And do they inspire you in some way?

- I believe that Venezuela in my creations can be read above all in the Let it bee collection and in the Little wild things collection, not only for the reference to nature but for the soft shapes of the lines, for the wildest and most disordered part of me. These lines, however, especially in the latest collections, are also very clean, geometric, minimal and for me they are the result of what I absorb from Rome. They are both two different realities but they coexist in me, even unconsciously, I can't tell you exactly what one gives me and what the other, but I'm sure that everything around us is a constant source of inspiration for us. -

Sonja Henie, pattinatrice, collezionista d'arte e attrice, diceva: "Mettetevi molti gioielli, le rughe si noteranno meno". Indossare gioielli cosa significa per te?

- Se penso a una parola chiave da associare a un gioiello è luce. Un gioiello dovrebbe illuminare la nostra pelle, contornare il nostro viso, risplendere tra i capelli, accompagnare il movimento delle nostre mani e prima di tutto, esprimere noi stesse. Credo che non si debba per forza indossare un gioiello, truccarsi e vestirsi in un determinato modo. È vero ci sono circostanze che lo richiedo ma prima di tutto, ognuna di noi dovrebbe portare solo cose che esprimano la propria essenza e ci facciano sentire confident con noi stesse. -

Sonja Henie, figure skater, art collector and actress, said: "Put on a lot of jewels, wrinkles will be less noticeable". To wear jewelry what mean to you?

- If I think of a key word to associate with a jewel, it is light. A jewel should illuminate our skin, outline our face, shine in our hair, accompany the movement of our hands and first of all, express ourselves. I think you don't have to wear jewelry, make up and dress in a certain way. It is true there are circumstances that require it but first of all, each of us should bring only things that express their essence and make us feel confident with ourselves. -
