Qualche volta accade. Succede che i sogni diventino realtà, come nelle fiabe e, soprattutto, dopo un percorso di vita non privo di ostacoli. È successo a Valentina Lucarelli, designer di gioielli e founder di Vu Elle, un progetto made in Italy in cui la passione per la creatività si fonde, come la cera persa usata per creare dei suoi pezzi, a quella per la purezza delle forme. La sua sfida? Rendere contemporanei elementi della tradizione, come le perle, e fare del monile d’autore un punto a favore, anche nel vasto e complesso mercato attuale. Come? Riflettendo, disegnando, sperimentando, dall’Abruzzo, dove vive, passando per AltaRoma, dove si rivela, fino al resto del mondo.

Sometimes it happens. It happens that dreams become true, as in fairy tales and, above all, after a life path that is not without obstacles. It happened to Valentina Lucarelli, jewelry designer and founder of Vu Elle, a made in Italy project in which the passion for creativity merges, like the lost wax used to create her pieces, with that for the purity of forms. Her challenge? Making traditional elements, such as pearls, contemporary and making designer jewelery a point in favor, even in the vast and complex current market. How? Reflecting, drawing, experimenting, from Abruzzo, where she lives, through AltaRoma, where she reveals herself, to the rest of the world.

Valentina, cos’è successo in Portogallo?

- Ho fatto un viaggio in Portogallo nel 2016, è una terra a me molto cara. Infatti non era la prima mia visita. Quell’anno in particolare ho fatto un viaggio on the road. Una delle tappe era Porto, una splendida città. Sono abituata, quando mi reco da qualche parte, a visitare delle gallerie d’arte. Lì ne ho trovata una piccolissima, tenuta da una giovane orafa. Una donna che tra l’altro ti somiglia! In più, mi affascinavano molto le sue creazioni: minimali. E io sono una persona dal gusto semplice, pulito. Lei era minuta, e nella struttura e in tutto ciò che faceva, come dei gioielli-miniature raffinatissimi, in oro e argento. La sua forza e al contempo delicatezza mi hanno spiazzata. Questo insieme di elementi mi ha dato il coraggio di tornare in Italia e intraprendere una strada che sognavo da tempo. -

Valentina, what happened in Portugal?

- I took a trip to Portugal in 2016, it is a land very dear to me. In fact it wasn't my first visit. That year in particular I went on a road trip. One of the stops was Porto, a beautiful city. I am used, when I go somewhere, to visit art galleries. There I found a very small one, held by a young goldsmith. A woman who, by the way, looks like you! In addition, I was very fascinated by her creations: minimal. And I am a person with a simple, clean taste. She was tiny, and in structure and in everything she made, like very refined jewels-miniatures, in gold and silver. Her strength and at the same time her delicacy have blown me away. This set of elements gave me the courage to return to Italy and embark on a path that I have long dreamed of. -

Cosa te lo impediva all’epoca?

- Vengo da una famiglia di avvocati, dalla cui eredità ho provato a slegarmi, tanto che provai a entrare a medicina, poi odontoiatria. Loro ovviamente non erano d’accordo, così a 21 mi convinsero a iscrivermi a giurisprudenza, laureandomi così in legge. A un certo punto della mia vita c’è stato un cambio di rotta, sia dal punto di vista professionale che personale. Quindi ho ricominciato da zero, proprio grazie all’orafa portoghese. Ho sempre amato i gioielli e soprattutto disegnarli, un’arte che ho riscoperto avere in quel periodo, nel 2016. -

What prevented you from doing this at the time?

- I come from a family of lawyers, from whose legacy I tried to untie myself, so much so that I tried to enter medicine, then dentistry. They obviously did not agree, so at 21 they convinced me to enroll in law, thus graduating in law. At some point in my life there was a change of direction, both from a professional and personal point of view. So I started from scratch, thanks to the Portuguese goldsmith. I have always loved jewels and above all designing them, an art that I rediscovered having in that period, in 2016. -

E dal 2016 cos’è accaduto?

- Sono tornata e ho iniziato a fare disegni a mano libera, pensando concretamente a fondare un progetto di gioielli. Questa gallerista utilizzava perle di acqua salata di appena 2 millimetri, idea che ho ripreso per creare il mio primissimo anello in argento. -

And what has happened since 2016?

- I came back and started making freehand drawings, concretely thinking about founding a jewelry project. This gallery owner used salt water pearls of just 2 millimeters, an idea that I took up to create my very first silver ring. -

A un certo punto hai frequentato l’Accademia di Costume e Moda di Roma.

- Esatto, nel febbraio 2018. Mi ero resa conto che i miei primi prototipi e disegni non potevano esaurirsi solo in una passione. Ho approfittato della rottura che ti dicevo per iscrivermi al corso di bijoux designer, fondando così Vu Elle e presentando la prima linea Less is More. Per me è stato importantissimo, specialmente perché mi ha dato modo di capire non solo gli aspetti tecnici della produzione ma anche cosa si cela dietro l’intera filiera del fatto a mano in Italia. Una volta finito il corso mi sono sentita sicura per poter intraprendere questa strada, la mia strada. -

At one point you attended the Accademia di Costume e Moda in Rome.

- Exactly, in February 2018. I realized that my first prototypes and drawings could not be exhausted only in a passion. I took advantage of the break I was telling you to enroll in the bijoux designer course, thus founding Vu Elle and presenting the first Less is More line. For me it was very important, especially because it gave me the opportunity to understand not only the technical aspects of production but also what lies behind the made in Italy supply chain. Once I finished the course I felt safe to be able to take this path, my path. -

Minimalismo e lavorazione artigianale sono i principali valori di Vu Elle, oltre che tuoi: ce ne sono altri?

- Sicuramente rimanere fedele a un concetto iniziale, a distanza ormai di 5 anni. Un gioiello che mi rappresenti. Vado sempre a disegnare ciò che prima o poi indosserò anche io. Infatti ho sempre amato, ad esempio, l’oro bianco. Per via dei costi molto alti di questo metallo, ho virato verso l’argento, nella versione naturale. Lo trovo certamente contemporaneo. E poi le perle, una scommessa per me: volevo sdoganarle da quello che è spesso considerato un utilizzo legato alla tradizione e un materiale poco adatto alle giovanissime. -

Minimalism and craftsmanship are the main values ​​of Vu Elle, as well as yours: are there others?

- Certainly remain faithful to an initial concept, now 5 years later. A jewel that represents me. I always go to design what sooner or later I'll wear too. In fact, I have always loved, for example, white gold. Due to the very high costs of this metal, I veered towards silver, in the natural version. I certainly find it contemporary. And then the pearls, a bet for me: I wanted to clear them from what is often considered a use linked to tradition and a material not very suitable for very young girls. -

Tutto è nato da quel famoso anellino?

- Esatto. Tornando alla scommessa con me stessa rispetto alle perle, ti dirò che in particolare la perla grigia si è rivelata la sfida più interessante. Sono molto raffinate e, secondo me, più accattivanti delle bianche. Inoltre si abbinano molto bene con l’oro giallo. -

Did it all start with that famous little ring?

- Exactly. Returning to the bet with myself regarding pearls, I will tell you that the gray pearl in particular turned out to be the most interesting challenge. They are very refined and, in my opinion, more captivating than the white ones. They also go very well with yellow gold. -

Esistono altri elementi tipici della tradizione orafa che vorresti rendere contemporanei?

- Nell’ultimo periodo mi sto avvicinando al mondo delle pietre, in particolare quelle semi-preziose, nonostante abbia utilizzato per la collezione dedicata ai solitari gemme come diamante nero, zaffiro e tzavorite, che preferisco rispetto allo smeraldo. Ora mi sto concentrando sul granato naturale, l’ametista e la rodolite, della quale adoro il suo punto particolare di rosso. -

Are there other typical elements of the goldsmith tradition that you would like to make contemporary?

- In the last period I have been approaching the world of stones, in particular semi-precious ones, despite having used for the collection dedicated to solitaires gems such as black diamond, sapphire and tzavorite, which I prefer over the emerald. Now I'm focusing on natural garnet, amethyst and rhodolite, of which I love its particular red point. -

Quali sono le fasi di creazione di un tuo gioiello?

- La fase più lunga, sofferta e difficile, nonché la prima, è quella che non si vede, ovvero quello che avviene nella mia testa. Incubare un gioiello spesso richiede molto di più, a volte anche un anno, che crearlo realmente anzi, in quello sono piuttosto veloce. Per giungere a una decisione mi serve un po’ di pace, di introspezione. Quindi nel momento in cui ho chiaro cosa fare, preparo un disegno a mano libera. Se i lavori prevedono l’utilizzo della cera persa il modello zero lo faccio io, altrimenti, se si tratta di elementi che necessitano di un orafo, sottopongo la bozza all’artigiano con cui collaboro da anni ormai. Un lavoro di concerto, di collaborazione. -

What are the stages of creating your jewel?

- The longest, most painful and difficult phase, as well as the first, is the one that is not seen, that is, what happens in my head. Incubating a jewel often takes a lot more, sometimes even a year, than actually creating it, in fact, I'm pretty fast at that. To reach a decision I need a little peace, some introspection. So when I have a clear idea of ​​what to do, I prepare a freehand drawing. If the model zero need the use of lost wax technique, I do it myself, otherwise, if it is about elements that need a goldsmith, I submit the draft to the artisan I work with. An ensemble, collaborative work. -

Viene prima il mercato o la creatività?

- Nel mio caso la creatività. C’è anche chi mi rimprovera per questo, sai? Assecondo il mio gusto, i valori in cui credo. Conosco il mercato, le sue esigenze, non mi chiudo in me stessa, ma preferisco ascoltare prima me stessa, le mie intuizioni, cercando di riuscire a farne parte senza perdere di personalità. -

Does the market come first or creativity?

- In my case, creativity. There are also those who reproach me for this, you know? I listen to my taste, the values ​​I believe in. I know the market, its needs, I don't close in on myself, but I prefer to listen to myself first, my intuitions, trying to be able to be part of it without losing personality. -

Siamo sulle gradinate di un set cinematografico di Cinecittà, per AltaRoma: cosa significa parteciparvi?

- AltaRoma rimane una delle poche realtà meritocratiche. È un’opportunità di farci conoscere per quello che siamo, senza chiedere nulla in cambio. Inoltre, essendo io abruzzese lo posso dire, è l’unica kermesse che promuove i talenti contemporanei del centro (e forse sud) Italia. -

We are on the steps of a Cinecittà film set, for AltaRoma: what does it mean to participate?

- AltaRoma remains one of the few meritocratic realities. It is an opportunity to make ourselves known for who we are, without asking for anything in return. Furthermore, being from Abruzzo I can say it, it is the only event that promotes contemporary talents in central (and perhaps southern) Italy. -

Un gioiello Vu Elle che indossi sempre o che è il tuo lascia passare quando sei indecisa?

- I primi anelli con le perle, sicuramente. Tanto che ne ho fatto un set. Per me ne ho creati tre. Attualmente, ho creato un earcuff, la prima creazione genderless e decisamente ottima quando non si sa cosa indossare ma si vuole avere un pezzo unico addosso. -

A Vu Elle jewel that you always wear or that is your passe-partout when you are undecided?

- The first rings with pearls, for sure. So much so that I made a set of it. For myself I have created three. Currently, I have created an earcuff, the first genderless creation and very good when you don't know what to wear but you want to have a unique piece on. -

Il gioiello più importante, a cui sei particolarmente legata invece?

- Paradossalmente non esco mai di casa senza orologio. Oltre, però, sicuramente un anello, un sigillo regalatomi da mia madre: lo portavo 20 anni fa come oggi. È senza tempo e vorrei che un giorno le mie creazioni, tutte uniche perché fatte a mano, anche se appartengono a delle collezioni, rimandassero queste sensazioni a chi le indossa. -

The most important jewel, to which you are particularly attached instead?

- Paradoxically, I never leave the house without a watch. In addition, however, certainly a ring, a seal given to me by my mother: I wore it 20 years ago as today. It is timeless and I would like my creations, all unique because they are handmade, even if they belong to collections, to convey these sensations to the wearer one day. -
