Isole & Vulcani li porta piuttosto bene i suoi 32 anni. Il brand di costumi da bagno in cotone nasce a Filicudi (Eolie), grazie all’intuito artigianale di Daniela Fadda, la quale, un giorno del 1989, decide di prendere del tessuto, modellarlo, tagliarlo a vivo e realizzarne un costume. Di lì a poco, tutte le avventrici dell’isola indosseranno le sue creazioni. Cristiano Fini, il figlio, oggi reinterpreta in chiave contemporanea il progetto materno, senza snaturarlo. E sulle nostre pagine ci racconta i motivi della scelta.

Isole & Vulcani looks great beside being 32 years old. The cotton made swimwear brand was born in Filicudi (Aeolian islands), thanks to the artisan intuition of Daniela Fadda, who, one day in 1989, decided to take some fabric, shape it, cut it raw and make a swimsuit. Shortly thereafter, all the female adventurers of the island will wear her creations. Cristiano Fini, his son, today reinterprets the maternal project in a contemporary key, without distorting it. And on our pages he tells us the reasons of the choice.

Cristiano, Isole & Vulcani nasce nel 1989, da un’idea di tua madre Daniela. Perché hai deciso di fare evolvere quel piccolo progetto?

- In realtà, come spesso capita per le cose belle, il progetto è evoluto da sé. Ho cominciato col creare un brand che rendesse più riconoscibili i costumi e poi, con l’ausilio di mia moglie Sara (Goldschmied, artista, ndr) abbiamo dato una identità più definita alla linea. -

Cristiano, Isole & Vulcani was born in 1989, from an idea of ​​your mother Daniela. Why did you decide to evolve that little project?

- Actually, as often happens with beautiful things, the project has evolved by itself. I started by creating a brand that would make the costumes more recognizable and then, with the help of my wife Sara (Goldschmied, artist, ed) we gave a more defined identity to the line. -

Qual era il tuo pensiero sui primi costumi in cotone? Ti piacevano oppure all’inizio eri scettico?

- Mi sono piaciuti subito, anche da piccolo. Li ho sempre trovati complementari allo spirito dell’isola. Filicudi alla fine degli anni Ottanta era un luogo molto scarno ed essenziale, non c’erano né acqua né luce e nella nostra contrada (Pecorini Mare) mia madre era l’unica ad avere una boutique. La spiaggia era popolata di ragazze e signore che indossavano quei costumi come se fossero sempre esistiti in quel contesto. -

What was your thought on the first cotton swimsuits? Did you like them or were you skeptical at first?

- I liked them immediately, even as a child. I have always found them complementary to the spirit of the island. Filicudi at the end of the eighties was a very sparse and essential place, there was no water or light and in our district (Pecorini Mare) my mother was the only one with a boutique. The beach was populated with girls and ladies who wore those costumes as if they had always existed in that context. -

Una caratteristica delle vostre creazioni sono i “nodini” delle spalline. Quale immagine rievocano in te?

- Personalmente mi ricordano immagini che ho visto su alcuni mosaici di epoca romana. Le linee sono essenziali, possono anche ricordare un design con qualcosa di giapponese ma il mood della linea è decisamente senza tempo. -

A feature of your creations are the "knots" of the shoulder pads. What image do they recall in you?

- Personally they remind me of images I have seen on some mosaics from the Roman era. The lines are essential, they can also recall a design with something Japanese but the mood of the line is definitely timeless. -

Vengono ancora realizzati a Filicudi, nelle Eolie?

- I costumi sono ancora completamente made in Italy ma non li tagliamo più a mano a Filicudi da qualche anno. Per un breve periodo, ti parlo di molti anni fa, mia madre ha tentato di creare un laboratorio di produzione a Filicudi con mano d’opera dell’isola. Purtroppo le mareggiate invernali e le difficoltà legate alla logistica da e per un luogo così inaccessibile l’hanno fatta desistere. -

Are they still made in Filicudi, in the Aeolian islands?

- The swimsuit are still completely made in Italy but we haven't cut them by hand in Filicudi for a few years. For a short time, I am telling you about many years ago, my mother tried to create a production workshop in Filicudi with the work of the island. Unfortunately, the winter storms and the difficulties related to logistics to and from such an inaccessible place made her desist. -

Artigianato contemporaneo. Definisci così il modus operandi con cui il mondo Isole & Vulcani si concretizza. Come nascono, allora, i vostri costumi?

- L’idea nasce con un paio di forbici e un pezzo di stoffa, senza macchina da cucire. Tenendo conto delle differenze dei fisici femminili, cercando di semplificare il più possibile. Non a caso il nostro primissimo modello, il bikini Ossidiana, non ha cuciture (solo nodi regolabili) ed è taglia unica. I costumi sono tuttora annodati a mano, nonostante l’evoluzione fatta c’è ancora una fortissima componente artigianale. -

Contemporary craftsmanship. This is how you define the modus operandi with which the world of Isole & Vulcani is realized. How, then, are your pieces born?

- The idea was born with a pair of scissors and a piece of fabric, without a sewing machine. Taking into account the differences of female physicists, trying to simplify as much as possible. It is no coincidence that our very first model, the Ossidiana bikini, has no seams (only adjustable knots) and is one size fits all. The costumes are still hand-knotted, despite the evolution made there is still a very strong artisan component. -

Non sono più pratici quelli in tessuto sintetico? Anche solo per asciugarsi in fretta, dopo una giornata al mare.

- A conti fatti direi di no. A temperature molto elevate la lycra non è molto confortevole. Con un costume di cotone è possibile restare in spiaggia per molto tempo o affrontare una lunga traversata in barca senza doversi bagnare per forza. I tempi di asciugatura sono relativamente più lunghi. E poi in acqua il confort è eccezionale. Senza contare il fattore inquinante di un materiale sintetico. -

Are those in synthetic fabric not more practical? Even just to dry quickly after a day at the beach.

- On balance I would say no. At very high temperatures, Lycra is not very comfortable. With a cotton swimsuit you can stay on the beach for a long time or face a long boat trip without having to get wet. Drying times are relatively longer. And then the comfort in the water is exceptional. Not to mention the polluting factor of a synthetic material. -

Wait and See x Isole & Vulcani

Il brand è conosciuto anche per le sue collaborazioni, l’ultima è con il concept store milanese Wait and See. Com’è nata? Prevedi di farne altre?

- Già in passato Wait and See ha venduto Isole & Vulcani con ottimi riscontri, inoltre Uberta Zambeletti, che è una cara amica, ha sperimentato personalmente l’atmosfera di Filicudi rimanendone incantata. La collaborazione era ed è una conseguenza naturale. Abbiamo quindi deciso di creare assieme qualcosa di bello ed esclusivo mantenendo lo spirito della linea ed il risultato ci ha entusiasmato. Siamo stati sempre aperti alle collaborazioni stimolanti e continueremo a farne anche in futuro. -

The brand is also known for its collaborations, the latest being with the milanese concept store Wait and See. How was it born? Do you plan to do more?

- Wait and See has already sold Isole & Vulcani in the past with excellent results, and Uberta Zambeletti, who is a dear friend, personally experienced the atmosphere of Filicudi and remained enchanted. Collaboration was and is a natural consequence. We therefore decided to create something beautiful and exclusive together while maintaining the spirit of the line and the result thrilled us. We have always been open to stimulating collaborations and will continue to do so in the future. -

Mare, viaggi, sole. Ci regali un pensiero, una frase, per inaugurare la stagione estiva?

- Al contrario di quello che la maggior parte della gente cerca in vacanza, l’estate per me è sempre stata un momento di serenità. Tre mesi di pace in un piccolo isolotto sperduto al largo delle coste nord della Sicilia. Mai come di questi tempi sono certo che tutti vorremmo una estate serena e mi auguro che tutti riusciremo a trascorrerla così. Ecco il mio pensiero: cerchiamo, anche solo per un breve lasso di tempo nel ciclo delle stagioni che si susseguono, di essere liberi e immersi nella natura che ci circonda. In essa c’è quella parte di noi con cui si fa fatica a parlare nella vita di tutti i giorni e, per questo, ci manca. -

Sea, travel, sun. Can you give us a thought, a sentence, to inaugurate the summer season?

- Contrary to what most people look for on vacation, summer for me has always been a moment of serenity. Three months of peace on a small remote island off the north coast of Sicily. Never as in these times I am sure that we all would like a peaceful summer and I hope that we will all be able to spend it like this. Here is my thought: let's try, even if only for a short period of time in the cycle of the seasons that follow each other, to be free and immersed in the nature that surrounds us. In it there is that part of us with which it is difficult to talk in everyday life and, for this reason, we miss it. -
