Costumi da bagno, i quali diventano dichiarazioni intime di qualità. È il leitmotiv di Kinda 3D Swimwear, brand made in Italy fondato da Alessandra Durastanti, designer e imprenditrice. Ma non solo: la creativa romana è anche amante della musica, degli sport (leggere per credere)e della libertà. Parola, quest’ultima, che spiega la sua scelta di vivere e lavorare a ritmi umani sulle rive del lago di Bracciano, poco distante da Roma ma abbastanza per creare e far crescere il suo team di donne, intente a far fiorire un progetto fatto a mano ed ecosostenibile.

Swimwear, which become intimate statements of quality. This is the leitmotiv of Kinda 3D Swimwear, a made in Italy brand founded by Alessandra Durastanti, designer and entrepreneur. But not only that: the roman creative is also a lover of music, sports (as you can read below) and freedom. This last word explains her choice to live and work at human rhythms on the shores of lake Bracciano, not far from Rome but enough to create and grow her team of women, intent on blossoming an artisanal and eco-friendly project.

Alessandra, racconta un po’ di te e di come sei arrivata a fondare Kinda 3D Swimwear.

- La definizione più bella che mi hanno dato è “tu sei una mixologist di marketing e scienza” e in effetti è vero. Sono laureata in economia e marketing e ho avuto l’onore di lavorare come brand manager in realtà internazionali molto importanti. Dopo sei anni, ho deciso che era arrivato il momento di mettere in campo tutta la mia esperienza, di spingermi oltre e di affrontare una nuova sfida, quella dell’imprenditoria e di un brand tutto mio. Sono nata sulle rive del lago di Bracciano, possiedo la patente nautica e trascorro moltissimo tempo in acqua (ultimamente si è appassionata al kitesurf, ndr). Creare costumi è stata dunque una scelta piuttosto naturale. -

Alessandra, tell a little about yourself and how you came to found Kinda 3D Swimwear.

- The best definition they gave me is "you are a marketing and science mixologist" and in fact it is true. I have a degree in economics and marketing and I had the honor of working as a brand manager in very important international companies. After sei years, I decided it was time to put all my experience into play, to push myself further and to face a new challenge, that of entrepreneurship and my own brand. I was born on the shores of lake Bracciano, I have a nautical license and I spend a lot of time in the water (she has recently become passionate about kitesurfing, ed). Creating costumes was therefore a rather natural choice. -

E la scienza?

- Sono un’appassionata di neuroscienze e mi piacerebbe prendere una specializzazione in Scienza Cognitive, ecco perché. -

What about science?

- I'm a neuroscience enthusiast and I'd like to take a major in Cognitive Science, that's why. -

Dalla collezione Les Nudes di Kinda 3D Swimwear

Alcuni dettagli dei vostri modelli sono realizzati in 3D. Bellezza è anche sperimentazione?

- Assolutamente sì. Per me sperimentare significa giocare con i materiali e con le forme, per creare nuove combinazioni di estetica e funzionalità. Kinda 3D Swimwear a nasce proprio dalla voglia di sfidare le convenzioni e di dare al costume da bagno il ruolo di capo d’abbigliamento a tutti gli effetti, a prescindere dall’occasione e dalla stagione. Mi sono avvicinata alla “Fabric Manipulation”, la tecnica di cucito 3D che utilizziamo per decorare i costumi Kinda 3D Swimwear durante gli anni di lavoro in P&G per Alexander McQueen l’ho imparata e ho poi deciso di applicarla ai tessuti elastici, una vera rivoluzione nel mondo dei costumi da bagno. -

Some details of your models are made in 3D. Is beauty also experimentation?

- Absolutely yes. For me, experimenting means playing with materials and shapes, to create new combinations of aesthetics and functionality. Kinda 3D Swimwear a was born from the desire to challenge conventions and to give the swimsuit the role of an item of clothing in all respects, regardless of the occasion and the season. I approached the "Fabric Manipulation", the 3D sewing technique we use to decorate the Kinda 3D Swimwear costumes during the years of working in P&G for Alexander McQueen I learned it and then I decided to apply it to elastic fabrics, a real revolution in the world of swimwear. -

A questo proposito, ci racconti della collezione Les Nudes?

- La collezione Les Nudes nasce ancora una volta dalla voglia di rendere il costume molto più che un indumento esclusivamente legato alle occasioni estive. È infatti una capsule libera da ogni definizione: i due modelli Lush (due pezzi) e Life (intero) posso infatti essere indossati sia come costumi per fare il bagno sia come lingerie, poiché realizzati in lycra effetto seta e con cuciture effetto laser. Una collezione che ho voluto disegnare come un inno alla libertà: di essere e di indossare ciò che vogliamo, come vogliamo. -

In this regard, can you tell us about the Les Nudes collection?

- The Les Nudes collection was born once again from the desire to make the costume much more than a garment exclusively linked to summer occasions. It is in fact a capsule free from any definition: the two models Lush (two pieces) and Life (one piece) can in fact be worn both as swimwear and as lingerie, as they are made of silk-effect lycra and with laser-effect stitching. A collection that I wanted to design as a hymn to freedom: to be and wear what we want, how we want. -

Dici: "addio definizioni”. Quanto per noi donne è importante, in generale, questa affermazione?

- È importante ricordare che ciò raccontiamo di noi stesse e a noi stesse, finisce sempre per diventare vero. Ecco perché le parole sono importanti, ed è altrettanto importante saper dosare con parsimonia le etichette che diamo e che ci diamo, perché finiscono per limitarci. E invece in ognuna di noi ci sono donne e stati d’animo dalle mille sfumature, ecco perché credo che la libertà esista proprio laddove non esistono definizioni. E se proprio dobbiamo definirci, iniziamo a farlo con le parole giuste (libere, intelligenti, intraprendenti, coraggiose, brillanti) così, al massimo, rischiamo che siano queste a diventare realtà. -

You say: “goodbye definitions.” How important is this statement for us women, in general?

- It is important to remember that what we tell about ourselves and ourselves always ends up becoming true. This is why words are important, and it is equally important to know how to dose sparingly the labels we give and that we give ourselves, because they end up limiting us. Instead, in each of us there are women and moods of a thousand shades, which is why I believe that freedom exists precisely where there are no definitions. And if we really have to define ourselves, let's start doing it with the right words (free, intelligent, resourceful, courageous, brilliant) so, at most, we risk that these will become reality. -

Anche la nozione di libertà. Quando ti sei sentita finalmente libera nel tuo lavoro?

- Che bella domanda, grazie. La mia scelta di lasciare un lavoro sicuro da dipendente per iniziare un’attività imprenditoriale da zero è stata inizialmente criticata da molte persone a me vicine. A lungo mi sono sentita dare della pazza (e probabilmente qualcuno lo pensa ancora), ma guadagnare la libertà lavorativa e personale di poter scegliere le persone con cui interagire è stato - ed è tutt’ora - il regalo più bello che abbia fatto a me stessa. -

Also the notion of freedom. When did you finally feel free in your work?

- What a good question, thank you. My choice to leave a secure job as an employee to start a business from scratch was initially criticized by many people close to me. For a long time I felt called crazy (and probably some still think so), but gaining the working and personal freedom of being able to choose the people to interact with was - and still is - the best gift I have given to myself. -

Accanto ai costumi/lingerie avete concepito la linea loungewear. Ce la racconti?

- Knitted Love Loungewear è nata durante il primo lockdown. Volevo realizzare una collezione comoda, sostenibile e femminile, da indossare sulla pelle nuda per sentirci bellissime dentro e fuori casa. Ci siamo ispirate al profumo del caffè, alla domenica mattina, al suono delle pagine di un libro, alle parole gentili per dare vita a una collezione morbida, come un caldo abbraccio. -

Alongside the costumes/lingerie you have conceived the loungewear line. Can you tell us a bit more about that?

- Knitted Love Loungewear was born during the first lockdown. I wanted to create a comfortable, sustainable and feminine collection, to be worn on bare skin to feel beautiful inside and outside the home. We were inspired by the scent of coffee, on Sunday mornings, the sound of the pages of a book, the kind words to create a soft collection, like a warm embrace. -

È vero che ogni modello porta il nome di una canzone?

- Sì, è vero. Amo la musica. Quando disegno c’è sempre un sottofondo musicale nella stanza e, fin dal primo giorno, mi sono chiesta come avrei potuto condividere questa passione con le mie clienti. Così ho scelto di dare ai miei costumi il nome di una canzone, perché condividere la stessa canzone è qualcosa di magico. La prossima volta che scarterete un pacchetto Kinda, saprete già quale colonna sonora mettere in sottofondo. -

Is it true that each model bears the name of a song?

- Yes, it is true. I love music. When I draw, there is always background music in the room and, from day one, I wondered how I could share this passion with my clients. So I chose to name my costumes after a song, because sharing the same song is something magical. The next time you discard a Kinda box, you will already know which one you’ll play in the background. -

Il tuo preferito?

- Grace, l’intero con spalline in tulle morbido lavorato a mano in 3D. È stato il primo costume che ho disegnato quando ancora non avevo un ufficio. Ero in cucina, ascoltavo la canzone di Jeff Buckley e all’improvviso la matita ha iniziato a scorrere. -

Your favorite?

- Grace, the one piece with 3D handmade soft tulle straps. It was the first costume I designed when I didn't have an office yet. I was in the kitchen, listening to Jeff Buckley's song and suddenly the pencil started to flow. -

Made in Italy, filati riciclati, ma anche un team al femminile. Com’è gestire una vera e propria azienda?

- Una grandissima sfida, una prova costante ma anche incredibilmente divertente. -

Made in Italy, recycled yarns, but also a female team. What is it like to manage a real company?

- A great challenge, a constant test but also incredibly fun. -

Però vi aiuta la location a superare lo stress. Com'è lavorare immerse nella natura, sul Lago di Bracciano?

- Il lago di Bracciano è la mia casa. Ho scelto di lasciare la città (ho sempre lavorato tra Roma e Milano) per avere un equilibrio e dei ritmi più adatti allo stile di vita a km0 e a basso impatto, che desideravo. La soddisfazione di aver creato anche un’azienda a km0 e attenta alla sostenibilità è immensa: dall’approvvigionamento esclusivamente italiano, ai cicli di produzione basati sull’effettivo venduto, fino alla scelta di un packaging esclusivamente in cartone riciclato e riciclabile, lavoriamo costantemente per creare un’azienda sempre più circolare. E il contatto con la natura che circonda il mio ufficio è senza dubbio fondamentale per mantenere questo focus. -

But the location helps you to overcome the stress. How is it to work immersed in nature, on lake Bracciano?

- Lake Bracciano is my home. I chose to leave the city (I have always worked between Rome and Milan) to have a balance and rhythms more suited to the low-impact and km0 lifestyle that I wanted. The satisfaction of having also created a km0 company attentive to sustainability is immense: from the exclusively Italian supply, to the production cycles based on the actual sold, up to the choice of packaging exclusively made of recycled and recyclable cardboard, we constantly work to create an increasingly circular company. And the contact with nature that surrounds my office is undoubtedly essential to maintain this focus. -
