Alice Rosignoli
Alice Rosignoli nasce a Ciriè, in provincia di Torino. Poi si sposta, va a Londra. Finché non approda tra Parigi e San Benedetto del Tronto. Dove vive, lavora e fonda La Débraillée, il suo marchio di borse made in Italy. Al contrario del suo nomadismo per l’Europa, la designer è concentrata. Pratica. Sa dove vuole arrivare e sperimenta. Lo stesso dicono i suoi accessori, concepiti come oggetti di uso quotidiano. La incontro a Milano qualche settimana fa, alla fine della settimana della moda. Insieme parliamo dei suoi progetti, di come nasce un suo modello e del futuro.
Alice Rosignoli was born in Ciriè, in the province of Turin. Then she moves on, goes to London. Until she arrives between Paris and San Benedetto del Tronto. Where she ives, works and founds La Débraillée, her brand of made in Italy bags. Unlike her nomadism for Europe, the designer is concentrated. Practice. She knows where she wants to go and she experiences. The same is true of her accessories, conceived as everyday objects. I meet her in Milan a few weeks ago, at the end of the fashion week. Together we talk about her projects, how her model is born and the future.
Alice perché hai deciso di fondare La Débraillée?
- Nasco come product designer, dopo un percorso si studi a Firenze. Terminato, sono andata a Londra e poi a Parigi, dove lavoro per Lingne Roset. Grazie a quest’ultima esperienza, sono riuscita a interfacciarmi con delle concerie che mi fornivano pellame per la realizzazione di prototipi. In questo modo riuscivo a realizzare delle borse. Inizialmente per me e per gioco; poi, con il passaparola di amici e parenti, è diventato un progetto più importante e personale, La Débraillée. -
Alice why did you decide to found La Débraillée?
- I started as a product designer, after studying in Florence. After that, I went to London and then to Paris, where I work for Lingne Roset. Thanks to this last experience, I managed to interface with tanneries, who supplied me with leather for prototyping. In this way I was able to make bags. Initially for me and for fun; then, with the word of mouth of friends and relatives, it became a more important and personal project, La Débraillée. -

Facevi tu i primi pezzi?
- Sì. Li cucivo io e non erano il massimo (ride). Erano molto semplici. Oggi, per fortuna, ho trovato un laboratorio che è maestro in queste lavorazioni. In realtà anche i modelli attuali sono molto pratici, versatili. Sai che c’è? Io intendo la borsa come un oggetto d’uso. Ecco perché inizialmente erano pezzi realizzati solo in nero. Inoltre ogni prodotto è un continuativo. Rimane nel tempo… magari posso cambiargli il colore o pellame. Ecco tutto. -
Did you do the first pieces?
- Yes. I sewed them and they were not the best (laughs). They were very simple. Today, fortunately, I found a laboratory that is a master of these processes. In reality, even current models are very practical, versatile. Do you know what? I mean the bag as an object of use. That's why they were initially pieces made only in black. Furthermore, each product is a continuative. It remains over time... maybe I can change its color or leather. That's all. -
Quindi come nasce una tua borsa?
- Generalmente inizio con uno schizzo, poi prendo della stoffa o della pelle sintetica che assemblo. Ma è il prototipo che porto all’artigiano che poi realizzerà il modello vero e proprio. -
Then, how is your bag born?
- I generally start with a sketch, then I take fabric or synthetic leather that I assemble. But it is the prototype that I bring to the artisan who then realizes the actual model. -
La Débraillée collection
La parola francese débraillée significa trasandato, sciatto. Sul tuo sito scrivi che il nome è utilizzato per enfatizzare l’aspetto confortevole delle tue borse. Puoi approfondire questo concetto?
- Ho impiegato molto tempo per trovare il nome del brand. Tutto parte dai bohémien e dal loro spirito picaresco. Poi, in un dizionario di termini filosofici francesi ho trovato débraillée e mi è piaciuta. Si tratta di un termine alto, non è di uso comune. Inizialmente può sembrare un termine peggiorativo, ma in realtà, se pensi ai grandi boemi della storia e della letteratura, non lo è affatto. L'ho scelto per affermare il mio non voler essere fashion. Chi indossa le mie borse è così: una persona attenta al contenuto e a come è fatto, piuttosto che a come appare. -
The French word débraillée means unkempt, sloppy. On your website, you write that the name is used to emphasize the comfortable appearance of your bags. Can you tell more about this concept?
- It took me a long time to find this name for the brand. All start from the bohemians and their picaresque spirit. Then, in a dictionary of French philosophical terms I found débraillée and I liked it. It is a high term, not in common use. Initially it may seem a pejorative term, but in reality, if you think of the great bohemians of history and literature, it is not at all. I chose it to affirm my not wanting to be fashion. Who wears my bags is like this: a person who is attentive to the content and how it is made, rather than how it appears. -
Ma non è in antitesi con l’idea stessa di creare un prodotto fatto per essere venduto?
- Certamente cerco sempre di tenere in equilibrio il rapporto tra forma e contenuto. Quando progetto le mie borse ne studio sia l’aspetto pratico che estetico. L’obiettivo è di offrire un prodotto senza tempo, classico. Molto controcorrente rispetto al sistema moda attuale. Vorrei, con i miei pezzi, rispondere alle domande che ci poniamo tutti nel quotidiano, tipo: vado in un museo e dove lascio la giacca? a ballare? Nel primo caso la infilo nella borsa, nel secondo la porto al polso. -
But isn't it in contrast with the very idea of creating a product made to be sold?
- I certainly always try to balance the relationship between form and content. When I design my bags I study both the practical and aesthetic aspects. The goal is to offer a timeless, classic product. Very against the current fashion system. With my pieces, I would like to answer the questions we all ask ourselves in everyday life, like: I go to a museum and where I leave my jacket? and at the club? In the first case I put it in my bag, in the second I wear it on my wrist. -

Vorrei approfondire un po’ il tuo pensiero sul sistema moda e sull’essere controcorrente:
- Vorrei uscirne da questo sistema, non mi trovo molto bene. Pare sia importante vendere e basta. C’è poco interesse nel prodotto e quindi nel progetto. Per questo mi dirigo verso l’e-commerce, senza passare per altri canali. Il futuro è altro ed è quello a cui voglio puntare. Non amo particolarmente, inoltre, l’idea di fare acquistare un prodotto a prezzi altissimi quando è creato per l’uso quotidiano. Per cosa lo faccio se pochi possono permetterselo? -
I would like to delve a little into your thinking on the fashion system and on being against the current:
- I want to get out of this system, I don't feel very well. It seems to be important to just sell. There is little interest in the product and therefore in the project. This is why I head to e-commerce, without going through other channels. The future is something else and that's what I want to focus on. Furthermore, I don't particularly like the idea of buying a product at very high prices when it is created for everyday use. Why do I do it if few can afford it? -
Produci le borse presso una piccola azienda italiana: come l’hai trovata?
- Me l’ha consigliata un’amica che lavora nel settore. All’inizio ne ho visti tanti e non è stato per nulla facile. Molti non raggiungevano il livello di qualità che volevo, altri si sono comportati davvero male. Questa è un piccola realtà abruzzese, vicina alle Marche, e sono una famiglia con cui mi trovo molto bene. -
You produce the bags at a small Italian company: how did you find it?
- A friend who works in the field recommended it to me. At first I saw a lot of them and it wasn't easy at all. Many did not reach the level of quality I wanted, others behaved really badly This is a small reality in Abruzzo, close to the Marche, and they’re a family with whom I am relate very well. -

Cosa ti attende nel futuro?
- Sto cercando di organizzarmi per presentare una collezione all’anno, al fine di spostarmi ancora più in là rispetto alle tendenze di mercato attuali. In questa ci saranno i nuovi modelli, i quali andranno a sommarsi a quelli della collezione permanente, che voglio mantenere perché l’idea di creare qualcosa che poi diventa obsoleto nel giro di sei mesi non fa per me. Inoltre, continuerò a concentrarmi sulle forme e sperimentare con i pellami. -
What awaits you in the future?
- I'm trying to organize myself to present a collection per year, in order to move even further than the current market trends. In this there will be new models, which will be added to those of the permanent collection, which I want to keep because the idea of creating something that then becomes obsolete within six months is not for me. Furthermore, I will continue to focus on the forms and experiment with leather. -
