Laura Forte
Questa intervistata è stata fatta qualche giorno prima della vittoria dell’Assamblage Award che Artistar ha dato a Laura Forte (1982), durante la Milano Jewelry Week. In realtà è solo l’ultimo di una serie di premi che la designer di gioielli di Copertino (Lecce) ha riscosso nella sua carriera. Dopo gli studi presso l’Accademia Orafa di Lecce, si trasferisce a Vicenza - capitale dell’oreficeria italiana - e diventa a tutti gli effetti orafa. Da quel momento la sua carriera e il suo nome diventano sempre più noti nel settore dell’oreficeria contemporanea. Su quest’ultima - oltre che sul suo approccio artistico-tecnico al gioiello - parliamo in questa conversazione.
This interview was made a few days before the Assamblage Award that Artistar gave to Laura Forte (1982), during the Milano Jewelry Week. Actually it is only the last in a series of awards that the jewelry designer from Copertino (Lecce) has received in her career. After studying at the Goldsmith Academy of Lecce, she moved to Vicenza - the capital of Italian jewelery - and in effect became goldsmith. From that moment her career and her name became increasingly known in the contemporary jewelery sector. On the latter - as well as on her artistic and technical approach to jewelery - we talk in this conversation.
Laura, come ti sei avvicinata al mondo del gioiello d’artista?
- Sono stata sempre affascinata dal mondo del design che rappresenta per me il sentimento estetico delle cose. Le mie opere nascono come pezzi unici o in edizione limitata dove la comunicazione si rivela un essenziale fattore esistenziale. -
Laura, how did you approach the world of artist jewelery?
- I've always been fascinated by the world of design that represents for me the aesthetic feeling of things. My works are born as unique or limited edition pieces where communication is an essential existential factor. -

A tale proposito, la tua breve biografia dice che i gioielli sono il modo in cui tu parli a te stessa. Pensando all'arte in generale, mi sembra un'affermazione particolare. Puoi approfondirla?
- Processi estetici, decorativi e di design divengono connettore di un'identità creativa dove l'arte svolge un ruolo fondamentale, divenendo il suo baricentro. Fare ed essere quindi tendono a coincidere come valore aggiunto in un’opera/non opera trasformandola in una poetica. L’arte diventa qualcosa di tangibile, di concreto, di esperienziale riducendo positivamente la distanza tra l'artista e lo spettatore. -
In this regard, your short biography says that jewelry is the way you talk to yourself. Thinking of art in general, it seems to me a particular statement. Can you go into it further?
- Aesthetic, decorative and design processes become a connector of a creative identity where art plays a fundamental role, becoming its center of gravity. Doing and being therefore tend to coincide as an added value in a work/none-work transforming it into a poetic. Art becomes something tangible, concrete, experiential, positively reducing the distance between the artist and the viewer. -

Molti dei tuoi lavori sono caratterizzati dalle linee geometriche. Da dove deriva questa scelta estetica?
- Come designer, il mio obiettivo deriva dalla necessità di veicolare contenuti particolari attraverso composizioni geometriche, nel modo più semplice possibile. Si tratta di un minimalismo formale a cui giungere, attraverso un lavoro di sottrazione e in un processo creativo di continua ricerca, della semplicità. -
Many of your works are characterized by geometric lines. Where does this aesthetic choice come from?
- As a designer, my goal comes from the need to convey particular contents through geometric compositions, in the simplest way possible. It is a formal minimalism that can be reached, through a work of subtraction and in a creative process of continuous research, of simplicity. -

Allo stesso modo, però, sono visibili degli spazi vuoti, in cui si vede, una volta indossati, la pelle o i capelli, nel caso degli orecchini. Che rapporto cerchi tra lo spazio, appunto, e la materia?
- Il mio studio si concentra principalmente tra materia e vuoto, le mie opere sono infatti concepite come spazi sgombri da riempire. Lo spazio è inteso come veicolo comunicativo, come fattore in grado di generare un’estetica, nonché la materializzazione di un tempo senza tempo. Considero il vuoto necessario quanto il silenzio per attivare quella parte di noi che ha più facile accesso alla fantasia, all'intuizione, alla visione di insieme, al pensiero laterale. -
In the same way, however, empty spaces are visible, in which one can see, once worn, the skin or hair, in the case of the earrings. What is the relationship between space, precisely, and matter?
- My research focuses mainly between matter and emptiness, my works are in fact conceived as uncluttered spaces to be filled. Space is intended as a communicative vehicle, as a factor capable of generating an aesthetic, as well as the materialization of a timeless time. I consider the emptiness as necessary as the silence to activate that part of us that has easier access to fantasy, intuition, overall vision, lateral thinking. -

Come nasce un tuo gioiello e come capisci che il risultato finale è quello giusto?
- I miei gioielli sono il risultato di un prodotto artistico che si sviluppa attraverso un immaginario creativo e intuitivo, dove elementi differenti tra loro si incontrano e si scontrano creando un unico linguaggio espressivo. Di nuovo, la mia visione parla di una percezione artistica tra spazio e vuoto rivelando la sua ineluttabilità di essere e divenire allo stesso tempo materia. La mia conclusione indica un concetto preciso: non ci sono scelte giuste o sbagliate, spesso è solo questione di alchimia. -
How is your jewel born and how do you understand that the end result is the right one?
- My jewels are the result of an artistic product that develops through a creative and intuitive imagery, where different elements meet and collide creating a unique expressive language. Again, my vision speaks of an artistic perception between space and emptiness revealing its ineluctability of being and at the same time becoming material. My conclusion indicates a precise concept: there are no right or wrong choices, often it is only a matter of alchemy. -
Parlando in generale, qual è lo stato di salute del gioiello contemporaneo?
- Il gioiello contemporaneo è ancora fragile nel suo intento seppur riesca a mettersi in scena attraverso performance e installazioni, tuttavia il suo potenziale mette in risalto il forte legame con il mondo dell'arte contemporanea. Esso diviene infatti un contenitore di emozioni, percezioni e visioni differenti per ogni artista che lo racconta in un lessico comune condiviso. -
Generally speaking, what is the state of health of contemporary jewelery?
- The contemporary jewel is still fragile in its intent even if it manages to get on stage through performances and installations, however its potential highlights the strong link with the contemporary art world. In fact, it becomes a container of different emotions, perceptions and visions for each artist who tells it in a common shared lexicon. -
