Un progetto d'arte partecipata nelle periferie (e oltre) è la storia di un amore nato a Milano

Milano per l’arte, la collettività. Le periferie, come Giambellino. Ma soprattutto per condividere la cultura, far crescere i suoi stessi attori e partecipanti. È l’obiettivo attuale di Milano Mediterranea, fondato da Rabii Brahim e la sua compagna Anna Serlenga, volto a coinvolgere artisti (di ogni medium e provenienza) e cittadini, senza alcun tipo di distinzione. Com’è umano che sia. E l’umanità è umanesimo, la sua definizione arcaica e, al tempo stesso attuale, contemporanea. Ed è dunque MiMed, raccontato dallo stesso Brahim, da Milano, passando attraverso Tunisi, dov’è nato.

Rabii da quale esigenza, anche personale, è nato il progetto Milano Mediterranea?

- Milano Mediterranea nasce per prima cosa come una continuazione di Corps Citoyen, un progetto nato a Tunisi nel 2013 che metteva in centro le pratiche partecipative all’interno dei processi di creazione artistica. Quando sono venuto a Milano avevo la necessità di creare uno spazio mio, uno spazio dove poter esistere ed esprimermi con la mia arte e il mio mestiere in prima persona e non tramite una narrazione bianca occidentale dominante, una narrazione che vuole parlare al posto mio e che mi coinvolge solo per utilizzarmi come parte della sua visione. Come artista non bianco non trovavo uno spazio che mi rappresentasse, e come me questo capita ogni giorno a tantissimi artisti senza voce. Per questo con la mia compagna di progetto e di vita Anna Serlenga abbiamo deciso di crearlo, questo spazio. Uno spazio dove non "si parla di" o "si lavora su" ma dove "si fa con”, e quando la narrazione riguarda una persona, si passa il microfono al protagonista. -

Rabii, from what need, even personal, was the Milano Mediterranea project born?

- Milano Mediterranea was first born as a continuation of Corps Citoyen, a project born in Tunis in 2013 that focused on participatory practices within the processes of artistic creation. When I came to Milan I had the need to create my own space, a space where I could exist and express myself with my art and my profession in the first person and not through a dominant western white narrative, a narrative that wants to speak for me and that engages me only to use me as part of his vision. As a non-white artist I couldn't find a space that represented me, and like me this happens every day to so many voiceless artists. For this reason, with my project and life partner Anna Serlenga we decided to create this space. A space where we don't "talk about" or "work on" but where "we do with", and when the narration concerns a person, we pass the microphone to the protagonist. -

Milano e il mondo mediterraneo, sembra una dicotomia.

- Secondo me Milano è anche mediterranea, personalmente quando vado in giro per le strade e i quartieri del centro e delle periferie sento parlare le lingue del mediterraneo, sento i profumi della cucina mediterranea ,la musica e i dialetti del nostro “mare bianco di mezzo”, come viene chiamato dalla sponda Sud. Milano è abitata dal mediterraneo nonostante la si percepisca come la vetrina della capitale europea, immagine narrata e raccontata da quelli che nei quartieri periferici non ci vanno, ma guardano la popolazione di questa città da dietro i vetri delle loro Tesla. -

- In my opinion Milan is also mediterranean, personally when I go around the streets and neighborhoods of the center and the suburbs I hear the languages ​​of the Mediterranean, I smell the scents of mediterranean cuisine, the music and the dialects of our "white sea in the middle", as it is called from the southern shore. Milan is inhabited by the mediterranean despite the fact that it is perceived as the showcase of the European capital, an image narrated and told by those who do not go to the suburbs, but look at the population of this city from behind the windows of their Tesla. -

E infatti il vostro obiettivo è quello di mettere in risalto anche la fama di Milano come un vero e proprio meltingpot. Le periferie esprimono chiaramente questo processo. Anche Giambellino?

- In realtà siamo più ambiziosi di così: il nostro obiettivo è di spostare il centro, ovvero far sì che questo quartiere, come tanti altri, possa essere il centro, centro di cultura, di arte, di bellezza e di economia. E siamo convinti che è possibile che questo processo venga fatto con chi il quartiere lo abita e lo vive, senza dover essere escluso e sentirsi costretto ad andare via. Un’utopia? Forse si, ma ci crediamo. -

- We're actually more ambitious than that: our goal is to move the center, meaning that this neighborhood, like so many others, can be the center, the center of culture, art, beauty and the economy. And we are convinced that this process can be done with those who inhabit and experience the neighborhood, without having to be excluded and feel forced to leave. A utopia? Maybe yes, but we believe it. -

Arte partecipata e Milano, poi il mare. Come avete organizzato il tutto?

- Milano Mediterranea come idea, struttura e progetto è stato scritto e sviluppato dentro la prima sessione della scuola dei quartieri, il progetto del comune di Milano, ed ha vinto un finanziamento che ci ha permesso di cominciare a concretizzare le nostre idee. Tuttavia sapevamo che da soli non saremmo andati da nessuna parte. Per questo abbiamo chiesto l'aiuto a quelli che oggi sono i pilastri di Milano Mediterranea e che alla fine citerò tutti: un gruppo di professionisti della comunicazione, della organizzazione, della progettazione e della tecnica, e prima di tutto un comitato di quartiere, un comitato composto da abitanti attivi, operatori giovani e meno giovani, di diverse competenze, di diversa provenienza, che da tempo lavorano nel quartiere. Con questo comitato prendiamo le decisioni e facciamo le scelte dei progetti. -

Participatory art and Milan, then the sea. How did you organize everything?

- Milano Mediterranea as an idea, structure and project was written and developed within the first session of the school of neighborhoods, the project of the municipality of Milan, and won a grant that allowed us to start putting our ideas into practice. However, we knew that alone we would not go anywhere. This is why we asked for the help of those who are today the pillars of Milano Mediterranea and who I will mention all of them in the end: a group of communication, oganization, planning and technical professionals, and first of all a neighborhood committee, a committee made up of active inhabitants, young and old workers, with different skills, from different backgrounds, who have been working in the neighborhood for some time. With this committee we make decisions and make the choices of the projects. -

- Possono partecipare tutti gli artisti senza limite di età, di disciplina o di provenienza. -

- Ancora meglio per noi: chi conosce, chi può rappresentare un territorio più di una persona che lo abita? -

Povertà, delinquenza, analfabetismo: cliché o qualcosa di concreto che grazie alla cultura può essere risolto?

- Sono delle cose concrete che vanno risolte con gli strumenti giusti. La cultura per un povero è un lusso mentre il lavoro è un bisogno.Il nostro ruolo qui è un ruolo politico, non stiamo facendo della cultura in questo contesto per tappare i buchi che hanno lasciato la politica economica e quella delle infrastrutture. Stiamo facendo cultura per prima cosa perché è un diritto. Noi pensiamo che l'accessibilità alla cultura debba essere garantita per tutti. In secondo luogo per far sì che le voci della periferia prendano spazio e vengano ascoltate, non attraverso lo strumento del “racconto della sfiga” ma con dignità e qualità. perché le soluzioni ci sono, ma la volontà politica no. -

Poverty, delinquency, illiteracy: clichés or something concrete that thanks to culture can be solved?

- These are concrete things that must be solved with the right tools. For the poor, culture is a luxury while work is a need. Our role here is a political one, we are not making culture in this context to plug the holes left by economic and infrastructure policy. We are making culture first because it is a right. We think that accessibility to culture should be guaranteed for everyone. Secondly, to ensure that the voices of the periphery take up space and are listened to, not through the tool of the "bad luck story" but with dignity and quality. because the solutions are there, but the political will is not. -

Pensate di espandere MiMed anche alle altre periferie?

- È un sogno realizzabile, Pensiamo che MiMed possa essere un protocollo valido per vari contesti. Ci stiamo lavorando da un po’. Uno dei prossimi progetti di Milano Mediterranea sarà la scuola decoloniale, dove faremo incontri, formazione, passaggio di protocolli e scambio di pratiche. -

Are you thinking of expanding MiMed to other peripherals as well?

- It's a dream come true. We think that MiMed can be a valid protocol for various contexts. We've been working on it for a while. One of the next projects of Milano Mediterranea will be the decolonial school, where we will hold meetings, training, transfer of protocols and exchange of practices. -

Su quale base selezionerete gli artisti che parteciperanno alle prossime residenze?

- L’unico criterio che ci guida è che la proposta o il progetto debba essere pensato per il quartiere e con il quartiere. E Milano Mediterranea dichiara che nelle sue scelte privilegia le proposte degli artisti delle diaspore o con background migratorio, tenendo in considerazione sempre la qualità della proposta. Successivamente la direzione artistica di MiMed studia e discute i progetti con il comitato del quartiere, decidendo alla fine insieme sulla base del consenso ottenuto. -

On what basis will you select the artists who will participate in the next residencies?

- The only criterion that guides us is that the proposal or project must be designed for the neighborhood and with the neighborhood. And Milano Mediterranea declares that in its choices it favors the proposals of artists from the diasporas or with a migration background, always taking into consideration the quality of the proposal. Subsequently, the artistic direction of MiMed studies and discusses the projects with the neighborhood committee, ultimately deciding together on the basis of the consensus obtained. -

Sei tunisino: come ti ha accolto Milano quando l’hai vista per la prima volta?

- Milano è una bellissima città per i turisti, e la mia prima volta come turista mi è veramente piaciuta. Non che ora non mi piaccia; tuttavia nella prima fase di visita, di osservazione e basta, si coglie solo la bellezza. Poi vivendo qui capisci che Milano non è solo Piazza del Duomo o Corso Como. -

You are tunisian: how did Milan welcome you when you saw it for the first time?

- Milan is a beautiful city for tourists, and my first time as a tourist I really enjoyed it. Not that I don't like it now; however in the first phase of the visit, of observation and that's it, only the beauty is captured. Then living here you understand that Milan is not just Piazza del Duomo or Corso Como. -

E quando hai incontrato per la prima volta la tua compagna Anna avete pensato sin da subito a realizzare un progetto così?

- In realtà la prima volta abbiamo pensato di andare a bere qualcosa e ballare. Più tardi, a un certo punto della serata ,Eravamo seduti e Anna mi ha parlato di un'idea sua di realizzare uno spettacolo che si chiama Mouvma: questo è stato il nostro primo progetto insieme. Da quella collaborazione ci è venuta voglia di continuare insieme, sia nella vita che nel lavoro. Da uno spettacolo siamo arrivati a formare una compagnia, e poi a pensare una realtà che si chiama MiMed. E intanto si è concretizzato un progetto di vita. -

And when you met your partner Anna for the first time, did you immediately think about creating a project like this?

- Actually the first time we thought we'd go for a drink and dance. Later, at one point in the evening, We were sitting and Anna told me about an idea of ​​hers to make a show called Mouvma: this was our first project together. From that collaboration we felt the desire to continue together, both in life and in work. From a show we came to form a company, and then to conceive a reality called MiMed. And in the meantime, a life project took shape. -

Un pensiero per l’arte?

- Il mio pensiero per l’arte è che spero che l’arte paghi. Che l’arte possa ricompensare degnamente noi artisti, i cittadini e tutti quelli che mettono tutte le loro energie, le loro idee, il loro tempo per poter produrre o realizzare un'opera d'arte o un progetto artistico. Sogno che questa precarietà finisca e che tutti noi possiamo dedicarci a creare arte senza dover lavorare mesi e mesi a cercare gli spiccioli per farlo. -

A thought for art?

- My thought for art is that I hope art pays off. May art worthily reward us artists, citizens and all those who put all their energies, ideas and time into producing or realizing a work of art or an artistic project. I dream that this precariousness will end and that we can all dedicate ourselves to creating art without having to work months and months looking for the spare change to do it. -
