"What would happen if?" la mostra che non c'è

Cosa succederebbe se un giorno scoprissimo, magari appena alzati e con in programma una routine ferrea, che la situazione in cui viviamo attualmente, ovvero quella della pandemia, è una bufala totale? Oppure, cosa accadrebbe se, sempre lo stesso dì e alla medesima ora, realizzassimo che il futuro che ci viene prospettato, nuovo diverso e roseo, è un’utopia su tutti i fronti? Da quello socio-politico passando all’aspetto economico di esso fino a quello ambientale. E siccome non ci piace lasciare fuori dal coro l’elemento culturale beh, aggiungiamo anche quello. Ecco se ambe due le condizioni dovessero concretizzarsi allora sarebbe meglio che la NASA si sbrighi a mandare le menti migliori della nostra generazione - tanto per usare citazioni - su Marte, cercando di ricostruire almeno un po’ di civiltà perduta.

What would happen if one day we discover, perhaps as soon as we get up and with a strict routine planned, that the situation in which we currently live, or that of the pandemic, is a total hoax? Or, what would happen if, always on the same day and at the same time, we realized that the future that is presented to us, new, different and rosy, is a utopia on all fronts? From the socio-political one through the economic aspect of it to the environmental one. And since we don't like to leave the cultural element out of the chorus, well, let's add that too. So if both conditions were to materialize, then it would be better for NASA to hurry up and send the best minds of our generation - just to use quotes - to Mars, trying to rebuild at least some lost civilization.

What would happen if? The choice of build an alternative future. È una delle tante mostre che prima del covid avrebbero certamente aperto con successo. Quindici artisti contemporanei genovesi e non sono stati riuniti in una collettiva in quel di Palazzo Ducale a Genova, nell’ambito del progetto europeo CreArt, piattaforma sulla quale, giocoforza, è stato possibile vedere l’esposizione dal 19 febbraio, giorno in cui si sarebbe dovuta tenere l’inaugurazione, alla presenza degli artisti e delle istituzioni. I temi da trattare, elaborare, incorniciare, installare o scolpire riguardavano la rivisitazione da parte dei creativi di eventi sia storici sia attuali e come questi abbiano influenzato la loro vita. Dalla politica alla tematiche ambientali, ogni lavoro propone a suo modo una riflessione sui topics che più di tutti stuzzicano l’immaginazione dei partecipanti all’evento. Digitale ovviamente.

What would happen if? The choice of build an alternative future. It is one of the many exhibitions that would certainly have successfully opened before the covid. Fifteen Genoese contemporary artists and they have not been gathered in a collective exhibition in the Palazzo Ducale in Genova, as part of the european CreArt project, a platform on which, of course, it was possible to see the exhibition from February 19, the day in which it should have been hold the inauguration, in the presence of artists and institutions. The themes to be dealt with, elaborated, framed, installed or sculpted concerned the reinterpretation by creatives of both historical and current events and how these influenced their lives. From politics to environmental issues, each work proposes in its own way a reflection on the topics that most of all excite the imagination of the participants in the event. Digital of course.

Scomodando ancora la NASA, l’agenzia ci scuserà l’impellenza ma qui c’è in ballo la cultura, Vesna Salamon, tra i quindici artisti di What would happen if? ha presentato Extreme Planet Makeover (2017), una serie di light box ispirata a un'applicazione della NASA che, valutando i danni dell'impatto umano sulla natura, ci proietta in un futuro dove l’umanità colonizzerà altri pianeti per perpetuare la specie. Anche Anti-cool con il video Luna (2020) propone una stratificazione di immagini e suoni in cui l'artista esplora la natura ciclica della vita sulla terra, l’effetto della luna piena sulla natura e sulla riproduzione umana. Il fine è quello di stimolare a una riconciliazione con l’ambiente trascurato inverosimilmente negli ultimi decenni.

E poi c’è il discorso politico, sempre ironico ed esteticamente preciso di Stefano Serretta. L’interprete fissa il suo lavoro su tutte le finestre e pareti di Palazzo Ducale, diffondendosi come un parassita. Solo che il virus questa volta non è il Covid-19 ma chi dovrebbe essere in grado di gestire la situazione da esso causata: il politico. Anche se Serretta non lo esprime esplicitamente. Anzi lo caricaturizza, unendo messaggi trovati su piattaforme di comunicazione online con figure mostruose e grottesche, andando così a disegnare un universo distopico segnato da sentimenti di ansia sociale e controllo autoritario.

Also Anti-cool with the video Luna (2020) proposes a layering of images and sounds in which the artist explores the cyclical nature of life on earth, the effect of the full moon on nature and human reproduction. The aim is to stimulate a reconciliation with the environment unlikely neglected in recent decades.

And then there is Stefano Serretta's political discourse, always ironic and aesthetically precise. The interpreter fixes his work on all the windows and walls of the Palazzo Ducale, spreading like a parasite. Except that this time the virus is not Covid-19 but who should be able to manage the situation caused by it: the politician. Although Serretta does not express it explicitly. Indeed he caricatured it, combining messages found on online communication platforms with monstrous and grotesque figures, thus creating a dystopian universe marked by feelings of social anxiety and authoritarian control.

La collettiva What would happen if? The choice of build an alternative future. è un pretesto perfetto per porre un ultimo quesito: e se non ci fossero più mostre? È necessario che si continui a promuovere l’efficacia della presenza, della sensualità dell’evento vissuto in uno spazio concreto. Ed è essenziale, al contrario, il non fare passare il messaggio che “tanto le esposizioni possono essere viste online”. No niente di più disumano. E costruire un futuro post-pandemia senza umanità, data dalla cultura, dall’arte e dai dibattiti delle idee, non è una distopia, si tratta semplicemente di qualcosa di impensabile. Almeno (e per fortuna) per alcuni.

The collective What would happen if? The choice of build an alternative future. is a perfect pretext to ask a final question: what if there were no more exhibitions? It is necessary to continue to promote the effectiveness of the presence, of the sensuality of the event experienced in a concrete space. And it is essential, on the contrary, not to get across the message that “both exhibitions can be seen online”. No, nothing more inhumane. And building a post-pandemic future without humanity, given by culture, art and the debates of ideas, is not a dystopia, it is simply something unthinkable. At least (and thankfully) for some.
