L’arte è una questione politica, in cui tutti gli artisti dovrebbero avere un ruolo gestionale della cultura e della società di un paese. I politici? Semplicemente non esistono. È un’idea platonica quella che propone a un certo punto della nostra conversazione la fondatrice del Techism movement Krista Kim. Appassionata di moda, mondo con il quale ha recentemente collaborato, Krista medita e porta questa antichissima pratica nell’arte digitale da lei concepita, unendo a essa luci al LED e suoni in grado di aiutare a guarire il proprio mondo interiore. Art is a political issue, in which all artists should have a managerial role in the culture and society of a country. Politicians? They simply don't exist. It is a platonic idea that the founder of the Techism movement Krista Kim proposes at a certain point in our conversation. Passionate about fashion, a world with which she recently collaborated, Krista meditates and brings this ancient practice into the digital art she conceived, combining it with LED lights and sounds that can help heal her (and ours) inner world. Oh yeah, Krista just built a house on Mars.

Krista, quali sono state le influenze che ti hanno fatta avvicinare al mondo dell’arte?

- La meditazione è il fondamento della mia pratica artistica. Quando vivevo in Giappone, ho avuto un'illuminazione nel famoso giardino del tempio di Ryoanji a Kyoto. Questo è il giardino zen più antico del mondo, ha più di 1000 anni, e quando l'ho visto per la prima volta, mi sono resa conto che lo spazio vuoto tra le rocce era stato appositamente creato dai monaci zen perché sapevano che lo spazio vuoto avrebbe colpito lo sguardo del visitatore. Krista, what were the influences that brought you closer to the art world?

- Meditation is the foundation of my art practice. When I lived in Japan, I had an epiphany at the famous Ryoanji temple garden in Kyoto. This is the oldest Zen garden in the world, over 1000 years old, and when I encountered it for the first time, I realized that the empty space between the rocks were purposefully created by the Zen monks because they knew the empty space would enter into the minds of the viewer. This creates a zen experience. I was so inspired by this experience because I realized that art becomes a mirror of the mind. In fact, our environment and everything around us mirrors into our subconscious so we must be mindful and curate of our surroundings. I practice transcendental meditation daily, and my artwork is a mechanism of healing for me, so I believe that it can heals others. I use the lights of the digital screen, the Power of color and healing frequency music, to induce a state of altered consciousness in for the viewer. -

E a quello del digitale?

- Ero preoccupata del potere dei social media che modellano negativamente la salute mentale del mondo. Sapevo che questo sarebbe accaduto nel 2014, quando ho scritto il mio manifesto su Techism (movimento artistico fondato da Krista, ndr). And to that of digital?

- I was concerned with the power of social media negatively disrupting the mental health of the world. I knew that this would happen back in 2014 when I wrote my manifesto on Techism (Krista’s art movement, en). It is a call to action or artists to be involved at the Vanguard of technological innovation through collaboration with engineers and tech entrepreneurs in order, we ensure that future culture is balanced and humane. -

Da diversi anni, in particolare dal 2012 quando hai iniziato a creare i tuoi digital paintings attraverso l'utilizzo di luci al led, unisci appunto l'arte al mondo immateriale della tecnologia. Che cosa volevi ricercare all'epoca ed è così ancora oggi?

- Ero una pittrice espressionista-astrattista. Nel momento in cui sono passata dalla pittura all'arte digitale, stavo scrivendo la mia tesi per il programma finale del mio master a Singapore. La mia tesi era sul rapporto tra "luce e sublime". Lo schermo è usato nella nostra società per manipolarci, invece io volevo usarlo come mezzo di guarigione e meditazione per guarire ed equilibrare la nostra cultura. Credo che la meditazione ci salverà dalla macchina e l'arte ci salverà da noi stessi. Ho quindi iniziato a esplorare le frequenze del suono in combinazione con il colore e la luce con le mie composizioni di arte digitale. Oggi creo pareti LED su larga scala e collaboro con artisti specializzati nelle frequenze di guarigione per creare un'esperienza immersiva di meditazione ,attraverso il potere dell'arte. Ora sto producendo una sorta di tour mondiale, in cui collaborerà anche Jeff Shroeder (chitarrista degli Smashing Pumpkins, ndr). Dalla vendita della Mars House, la maggior parte dei proventi va al finanziamento del nostro tour mondiale per portare la salute mentale e la guarigione in tutto il mondo. -

For several years, especially since 2012, when you started creating your digital paintings through the use of LED lights, you have been combining art with the immaterial world of technology. What did you want to research at the time and is it still the case today?

- I used to be an abstract expressionist painter. At the time when I switched from painting into digital art, I was writing my thesis for my masters of final program in Singapore. My thesis was "light and the sublime." The screen is used used in our society to manipulate us, but I wanted to use the screen as a Medium of Healing and Meditativeness in order to heal and balance our culture. I believe that meditation will save us from the machine and art will save us from ourselves. I then began to explore Healing sound frequencies in combination with color and light with my compositions of digital art. I create large scale LED walls and I collaborate with sound healing frequency artists to create an immersive experience of meditativeness through the power of art. I am now producing the continuing world tour and Jeff Shroeder (Smashing Pumpkins’ guitarist, en) will collaborate. From the sale of Marks house, the majority of proceeds go toward financing of our world tour to bring mental health and healing around the world. -

Parliamo allora del Techism movement di cui sei fondatrice nel 2014. Ci spieghi in cosa consiste?

- L'artista porta sempre umanità nel mondo. Gli artisti sono quelli che dovrebbero guidare la cultura, non i tecnocrati e gli imprenditori tecnologici. Attualmente contiamo il maggior numero di persone depresse e ansiose di tutti i tempi penso proprio a causa dei social media, in particolare Facebook. L'app è progettata per renderci dipendenti e nutrirci delle nostre debolezze umane. Questo è quello che succede quando non hai creativi al tavolo di discussione mentre si creano nuove aziende, le quali modificano la cultura e apportano profondi cambiamenti nelle dinamiche umane. Per rendere il mondo più umano, l’artista deve essere in prima linea nell'innovazione tecnologica perché siamo motivati ​​a rendere il mondo più bello e vivibile. La collaborazione di artisti, ingegneri e imprenditori tecnologici garantisce l'equilibrio e l'armonia tra uomo e tecnologia. Di recente sono diventata Global Ambassador per una start up chiamata Superworld. È un'azienda che ha creato un'interfaccia AR (Augmented Reality, realtà aumentata, ndr) in tutto il mondo. In fact you are the founder in 2014 of an artistic current called Techism movement. Can you explain to us what it consists of?

- Artist always bring humanity into the world. Artists are the ones who should be leading culture, not technocrats and technology entrepreneurs. So far, we are experiencing the greatest numbers of depression and anxiety in history because of social media especially Facebook. If we look at how Facebook has led our culture for the past decade, it has been used to exploit us and mine data to sell it to third parties. The app is designed to make us addicted and feed off of our human weaknesses. This is what happens when you do not have artists at the table when you were creating a new company that shifts culture and makes profound changes in human dynamics. In order to make the world more humane, Artist must be at the forefront of technological innovation because we are motivated by making the world more beautiful and humane. The collaboration of artists and engineers and tech entrepreneurs ensures that there is balance and harmony between man and technology. I have recently become the Global Ambassador for a start up called Superworld. It’s a company that has created an AR (Augmented Reality, en)interface around the world. They are selling virtual real estate based on actual real estate, where you can create and buy place 3-D Programmable digital assets in the virtual spaces for others to see and share. With this technology we will see a great creative renaissance. This is also Techism in action, and my work with Superworld will demonstrate this. We want to make the world beautiful. We want to make the world better. We think long term about humanity first. -

A proposito di web: vanti su Instagram quasi trenta mila followers. Per una persona che mette in mostra solo il suo lavoro è una rarità. Eppure le tue opere digitali conquistano sempre di più il pubblico. Anche quello della moda. Com'è nata la collaborazione con il direttore creativo di Lanvin Olivier Lapidus per la collezione invernale del 2018?

- Olivier ha scoperto il mio lavoro su Internet e mi ha contattato direttamente per proporre una collaborazione. Era più o meno nell’ottobre del 2017 e ho subito colto l'occasione. È stato un vero sogno che si è avverato l’assistere alla nostra sfilata di moda per la collezione autunno inverno 2018 a Parigi. Hanno scelto cinque delle mie opere come ispirazione per l'intera cartella colori della collezione. Le nostre sneakers Krista Kim erano molto popolari e anche le borse sono andate subito sold out. In futuro farò ancora lavori così, sotto forma di NFT (Non Fungible Token). -

Speaking of the web: you have almost thirty thousand followers on Instagram. For a person who only showcases her work it is a rarity. Yet your digital works are conquering the public more and more. Even that of fashion. How did the collaboration with Lanvin creative director Olivier Lapidus for the 2018 winter collection start?

- Olivier came across my work on the Internet and he contacted me directly to propose a collaboration. Was around October 2017, and I immediately excepted the opportunity. It was a real dream come true to attend our fashion show for the fall winter collection in 2018 in Paris. They chose five of my artworks as the inspiration for the entire color card of the collection. Ours Krista Kim sneakers were super popular and the handbags also were sold out. I will pursue more of these projects in the near future as a NFTs (Non Fungible Token). -

Ti affascina la moda e se sì quali sono gli aspetti che ti attraggono di più?

- Adoro la moda e sono sempre alla ricerca di nuovi modi per integrare le mie opere d'arte e i miei progetti attraverso la collaborazione con questo mondo. Ho progetti NFT in arrivo quest'anno nei campi dell’alta gioielleria, delle borse, dell’interior design e altro ancora. Sarà un futuro molto eccitante. Sono sempre alla ricerca di opportunità per spingere i confini nella moda e presentare una visione futurista di come essa potrebbe essere. -

Are you fascinated by fashion and if so what are the elements that attract you the most?

- I adore fashion, and I am always exploring new ways to integrate my artwork and projects through collaboration. I have NFT projects coming this year in fine jewelry, handbags, interior design, and more. It's going to be a very exciting future. I am always looking for opportunities to push boundaries in fashion and to present a futurist vision of how fashion could be. -

Siamo appena arrivati su Marte, la Nasa lo ha comunicato qualche settimana fa con delle immagini mozzafiato. Anche tu sei in un certo senso approdata sul pianeta rosso con l'ultimo progetto intitolato Mars House, la prima casa digitale, al quale hai accennato brevemente prima. Con quale scopo?

- Durante la fase più drammatica del Covid dell’anno scorso, mi è venuto in mente di creare la mia casa dei sogni. In qualità di artista digitale, voglio creare substrati per schermi LED per i soffitti, pareti e pavimenti, per una casa ultra moderna, come se fosse una scultura luminosa sempre rivolta all’obiettivo di “guarire” l’umano. Volevo creare una casa che fosse una scultura di luce per la meditazione e il design futurista utilizzando materiali sostenibili. Ho integrato elementi di design di arredo realizzati con vetro temperato. Questi mobili in vetro saranno creati in collaborazione con il prestigioso Studio Berengo di Murano, in Italia. Collaborano con i migliori artisti di tutto il mondo, incluso Ai Wei Wei, per realizzare sculture e opere d'arte in vetro. Volevo dimostrare il fatto che le nostre case possono guarire, attraverso il potere dell'arte. Credo che il futuro del lusso stia sfruttando la tecnologia all'avanguardia per riscoprire il benessere e l’umanità. -

We have just arrived on Mars, NASA communicated it a few weeks ago with breathtaking images. You too have in a sense landed on the red planet with the latest project entitled Mars House, the first digital home, which you told a bit before. With what purpose?

- During the height of the Covid lockdown last year, I was inspired to create my dream home. As a digital artist, I want to create LED screen substrates for the ceilings walls and floors, for an ultra modern home as a light sculpture for healing. I wanted to create a home that is a sculpture of light for meditativeness and futurist design using sustainable materials. I integrated design elements of furniture created with tempered glass. These glass furniture pieces will be created in collaboration with the prestigious Berengo Studio in Murano Italy. They collaborate with top artist around the world including Ai Wei Wei to realize glass sculpture and artworks. I wanted to present my thesis that our homes can heal, through the power of art. I believe that the future of luxury is harnessing cutting edge technology for wellness and humanity. -

Continui a parlare di meditazione. Ritieni sia un fattore imprescindibile se si vuole sopravvivere nella vita digitale e vera al caos esistente sui social media?

- Sì. Credo che abbiamo bisogno di una pratica quotidiana di meditazione per sopravvivere all'era digitale. Soprattutto quando entreremo in stili di vita di realtà aumentata. Dobbiamo essere in grado di connetterci in silenzio alla nostra spiritualità e umanità. Se non abbiamo questa tradizione o pratica, entro poche generazioni, potremmo perdere i nostri lati più umani. La nuova tecnologia è così potente che ha la capacità di controllarci attraverso algoritmi e livelli subconsci. È molto pericoloso se non hai un meccanismo di salute mentale e per ottenerla, secondo me, l’unica via è la meditazione. -

You keep talking about meditation. Do you think it is an essential factor if you want to survive in the digital and real life the chaos existing on social media?

- Sure. I believe that we need to have a daily practice of meditation in order to survive the digital age. Especially when we are going to enter augmented reality lifestyles. We need to be able to connect in silence to spirituality and humanity. If we do not have this tradition or practice, within generations, we can become inhuman. New technology is so powerful that it has the ability to control us through algorithms and subconscious levels. It is very dangerous if you don't have a mechanism of mental health, and the ultimate practice is meditation. -

Eppure, nonostante tu stessa cerchi di promuovere un modo più umano di utilizzare questi mezzi, alla fine li usi per fare la tua arte, non solo per promuoverla. Non ti sembra una contraddizione?

Yet, although you yourself try to promote a more humane way of using these tools, you ultimately use them to make your own art, not just to promote it. Doesn't that seem like a contradiction to you?

- I believe that getting my message across every social media platform is very important. The more exposure I have, the more education people receive about the importance of meditation and mental health. It is just the nature of our times. If I do not get my message out into the public, then I would be failing as an artist. —

Parliamo di Superrare e la Crypto art che è esplosa durante la pandemia. Fare arte in questo modo non toglierà per sempre la gente dai musei, dalla bellezza di trovarsi di fronte a un quadro o a una scultura?

- Non credo che l'arte tradizionale o l'arte analogica scompariranno. Credo che il mondo dell'arte abbia la capacità di accogliere una grande varietà di arti appunto, come dovrebbe sempre fare. Let's talk about Superrare and the Crypto art that exploded during the pandemic. Will making art in this way take people away from museums, from the beauty of being in front of a painting or a sculpture forever?

- I do not believe that traditional art or analogue art, will disappear. I believe the art world has the capacity to accommodate a vast variety of art, as it should. However, I do believe that in order for museums to survive, there must be an interactive and an AR experiential component to their programming in order to attract Digital natives. Museums must evolve and adjust to society. I love the beauty of a painting on the wall. There will always be a special connection to classical art forms, this is simply a matter of market preference and trends. Perhaps they will not be as popular, but they will always be around. -

Ci porterai su altri pianeti in futuro?

- Questa è un’idea molto interessante e apprezzo la tua domanda. - This is a very interesting proposition, and I appreciate your question.
