Cos’hanno in comune Umberto Eco, Gianni Agnelli e Lisa Borgiani? L’Europa. O meglio, una sua particolare visione. Se il premio Nobel la interpreta come un melting pot da condividere, l’industriale più chic del mondo spinge gli italiani a vederla in un’ottica globale. La fotografa veneta (1979), invece, la immortala. Attraverso scatti e interviste ai cittadini del Vecchio Continente, realizza un reportage dal titolo didascalico: What is Europe to you?. Ecco il suo racconto.

What do Umberto Eco, Gianni Agnelli and Lisa Borgiani have in common? Europe. Or rather, a particular vision of it. If the Nobel laureate interprets it as a melting pot to be shared, the most chic industrialist in the world pushes italians to see it in a global perspective. The venetian photographer (1979), on the other hand, immortalize it. Through shots and interviews with citizens of the Old Continent, she creates a reportage with the precise title: What is Europe to you?. Here is her story.

Lisa, la Gran Bretagna è appena uscita dall'UE. Durante il tuo viaggio hai intervistato, assieme a Marta Ottaviani, e ritratto diverse persone. Da qui è nato What is Europe to you?: quale opinione avevano a riguardo e qual è il tuo sentimento rispetto alla Brexit?

- Ritraendo e parlando con i cittadini europei ho percepito un grande dispiacere e preoccupazione per la Brexit. Alcuni temono possa essere l’inizio della frammentazione dell’Europa. Spero che questo mio lavoro aiuti a riflettere sul significato di Europa, ognuno dentro di noi e si riesca a capire l’importanza di essere uniti, in particolare in questo difficile momento. -

Lisa, Britain has just left the EU. During your trip you have interviewed, together with Marta Ottaviani, and portrayed several people. Hence What is Europe to you? was born: what opinion did they have about it and what is your sentiment regarding Brexit?

- In portraying and speaking with European citizens, I perceived great regret and concern for Brexit. Some fear it may be the beginning of the fragmentation of Europe. I hope that this work of mine helps to reflect on the meaning of Europe, each one within us and that we can understand the importance of being united, especially in this difficult moment. -

Torniamo all'inizio del progetto. Era il 2019. Come mai hai deciso di realizzarlo e quindi rappresentarlo attraverso la tua macchina fotografica?

- Per anni mi sono chiesta che cosa fosse l’Europa per me senza riuscire a darmi una vera risposta. Ho pensato così di chiederlo direttamente ai cittadini europei, attraverso lo strumento con cui mi esprimo meglio: la macchina fotografica. L’obiettivo è di ritrarre i singoli individui come parte di una comunità. Credo sia interessante rappresentare l’unicità dei loro volti e il loro background (ritraendoli e specificando il loro nome e la loro professione), inserendoli nel contesto in cui vivono (indicando il luogo) e facendo dialogare la loro immagine insieme alla parola chiave che esprime la loro idea di Europa mentre rispondono tutti alla stessa domanda: What is Europe to you?. Sarà interessante un giorno per le future generazione riflettere su questa indagine sociologica degli europei. Sarebbe bello che i giovani portassero avanti questo racconto anche in futuro. -

Let's go back to the beginning of the project. It was 2019. Why did you decide to make it and then represent it through your camera?

- For years I have wondered what Europe was for me without being able to give myself a real answer. So I thought of asking European citizens directly, through the tool with which I express myself best: the camera. The goal is to portray individuals as part of a community. I think it is interesting to represent the uniqueness of their faces and their background (portraying them and specifying their name and their profession), inserting them in the context in which they live (indicating the place) and making their image dialogue together with the keyword it expresses. their idea of ​​Europe while they all answer the same question: What is Europe to you?. It will be interesting one day for future generations to reflect on this sociological survey of Europeans. It would be nice for young people to continue this story also in the future. -

Guardando al nostro paese, Gianni Agnelli una volta ha detto: “Per essere italiani nel mondo, dobbiamo essere europei in Italia.” Sei d'accordo? Anche in base alle testimonianze che hai ascoltato.

- Sì, sono perfettamente d’accordo. E aggiungerei: “Per essere italiani in Europa dobbiamo essere europei nel mondo”. Sono convinta, anche in base alle risposte che ho raccolto, che ognuno di noi senta il bisogno di esprimere la propria identità e unicità per potersi sentire veramente parte di una comunità. -

Looking at our country, Gianni Agnelli once said: "To be Italian in the world, we must be European in Italy." Do you agree? Also based on the testimonials you have heard.

- Yes, I totally agree. And I would add: "To be Italian in Europe we must be European in the world". I am convinced, also on the basis of the answers I have collected, that each of us feels the need to express their identity and uniqueness in order to truly feel part of a community. -

Umberto Eco, per citare un altro grande del Novecento, sosteneva invece che a unirci fossero le arti in generale. E che il nostro saper fare riusciva ad andare oltre le evidenti barriere linguistiche che ci contraddistinguono. È l'arte il segreto della nostro unità?

- Credo di sì se pensiamo ad un concetto di arte esteso: l’arte di capire, l’arte di scrivere, l’arte di conoscere, l’arte di disegnare, l’arte di condividere e comunicare, l’arte di indagare, l’arte della comprensione… sono tutte arti importanti che abbiamo fatto crescere in un certo mondo nel corso degli anni e sui cui si basano i valori della nostra democrazia. -

Umberto Eco, to quote another great of the twentieth century, argued instead that we were united by the arts in general. And that our know-how was able to go beyond the obvious linguistic barriers that distinguish us. Is art the secret of our unity?

- I think so if we think of an extended concept of art: the art of understanding, the art of writing, the art of knowing, the art of drawing, the art of sharing and communicating, the art of investigating , the art of understanding… these are all important arts that we have grown in a certain world over the years and on which the values ​​of our democracy are based. -

What is Europe to you? è in continua evoluzione. State facendo una raccolta fondi attraverso The Art of Nets. Perché è così importante far sapere al pubblico cosa ne pensano i cittadini di questa istituzione?

- Ritengo che la costruzione di un puzzle europeo sia necessario e urgente per mostrare ai cittadini e alle Istituzioni l’importanza del fenomeno che stiamo vivendo. Sono convinta che la reale percezione di ogni singolo cittadino (lo studente, l’imprenditore, l’impiegato, il pensionato, il professore, l’immigrato, l’intellettuale, il macellaio, l’artista…) sia diversa da quella percepita dalla comunità e dalle Istituzioni e spero che questo lavoro possa mostrare e lasciare una traccia di tutte queste diversità (linguistiche, sociali o culturali) che ci contraddistinguono, per rafforzare l’identità collettiva della società. Per questo anche grazie alla collaborazione con il Master in Digital Strategy del Politecnico di Milano. Abbiamo sviluppato quattro strategie digitali per coinvolgere e rendere i cittadini europei parte attiva di questo lavoro: sia quelli che vivono nelle grandi città, sia quelli dei paesi, hanno il diritto di esprimere e condividere il loro sentimento nei confronti della loro Europa con immagini e parole. -

What is Europe to you? is constantly evolving. You're doing a fundraiser through The Art of Nets. Why is it so important to let the public know what citizens think of this institution?

- I believe that the construction of a European puzzle is necessary and urgent to show citizens and institutions the importance of the phenomenon we are experiencing. I am convinced that the real perception of each individual citizen (the student, the entrepreneur, the employee, the pensioner, the professor, the immigrant, the intellectual, the butcher, the artist…) is different from that perceived by the communities and institutions and I hope that this work can show and leave a trace of all these differences (linguistic, social or cultural) that distinguish us, to strengthen the collective identity of society. For this reason, also thanks to the collaboration with the Master in Digital Strategy of the Politecnico di Milano. We have developed four digital strategies to involve and make European citizens an active part of this work: both those who live in large cities and those in countries have the right to express and share their sentiment towards their Europe in images and words. -

Rispetto alla crisi attuale dovuta al Covid-19 pensi che l'Unione stia agendo come da principio oppure "ognuno si salva da solo”

- Non sono un’esperta ma mi sembra che l’Unione Europea stia facendo il possibile per salvare la nostra Europa. È evidente che abbia enormi difficoltà di comunicazione. Manca una vera e diretta connessione tra Istituzioni e cittadini e molti europei percepiscono questa mancanza in modo evidente, quasi come un abbandono. Credo l’arte debba avere il suo ruolo per connettere tutto questo. -

Compared to the current crisis due to Covid-19, do you think that the Union is acting as in principle or "everyone saves himself"

- I am not an expert but it seems to me that the European Union is doing everything possible to save our Europe. It is evident that he has enormous communication difficulties. There is no real and direct connection between institutions and citizens and many Europeans perceive this lack in an evident way, almost as an abandonment. I believe art must have its role to connect all this. -

Facendo una summa di tutto ciò che hai visto finora. Alla fine credi che l'unità è una questione di apparenza solamente o si respira davvero tra i vari Stati?

- Sono rimasta veramente sorpresa nel vedere quanti cittadini mostrino fiducia e ottimismo nei confronti dell’Europa. Ascoltando le loro storie è bello vedere come spesso l’Europa abbia migliorato la loro vita. Certo, ci sono moltissime cose da sistemare e da cambiare ma se ci crediamo e lo faremo tutti insieme potremo trarne solo dei vantaggi. -

Summing up everything you've seen so far. In the end, do you believe that unity is a matter of appearance only or does it really exist between the various states?

- I was really surprised to see how many citizens show confidence and optimism towards Europe. Listening to their stories it is nice to see how often Europe has improved their lives. Of course, there are many things to fix and change but if we believe in it and we will do it all together we can only benefit from it. -

Cos'è per te l’Europa?

- Quello che sto rappresentando: un collage di ritratti e parole composto da singole identità inserite in una comunità. -

What is Europe to you?

- What I am representing: a collage of portraits and words composed of individual identities inserted in a community. -

Grecia, Germania, Milano e Roma. Prossime tappe e perché?

- Le prossime tappe saranno Madrid, Bruxelles, Parigi, Dublino e le altre a seguire. Immagino già una mostra dove si potranno vedere insieme i volti e le parole di italiani, francesi, tedeschi, spagnoli, irlandesi, belgi, austriaci e tutti gli altri. Un giorno, con orgoglio, intitoleremo questa mostra: Gli Europei del XXI° secolo. -

Greece, Germany, Milan and Rome. Next places and why?

- The next stops will be Madrid, Brussels, Paris, Dublin and the others to follow. I already imagine an exhibition where the faces and words of Italians, French, Germans, Spaniards, Irish, Belgians, Austrians and all the others can be seen together. One day, we will proudly title this exhibition: The Europeans of the 21st century. -
