"La simmetria dei desideri" di Eshkol Nevo
1998. Estate israeliana. Mondiali di calcio. Quattro amici che scandiscono la loro vita in questo lasso di tempo e, così, Yuval, Amichai, Ofir e Churchill si inventano un modo, un gioco in cui ognuno di loro esprime tre desideri che vorrebbero vedere realizzati entro i prossimi quattro anni. I desideri andranno in una scatola e verrà aperta solo in occasione della finale dei mondiali del 2002. Tutto ciò fa da contorno a una grande storia d’amore tra Yuval, il narratore, e Yaara.

Four friends who mark their life in this period of time and, thus, Yuval, Amichai, Ofir and Churchill come up with a way, a game in which each of them expresses three wishes that they would like to see fulfilled within the next four years. The wishes will go into a box and will only be opened on the occasion of the 2002 World Cup final. During those matches they share everything: their chatter ranges from the music of their favorite band, from memories related to high school desks to enrollment in the Intifada in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, work problems and falling in love. The friendship is held strong despite the conflicts that will arise and the problems that the four friends will have to face along their path. All this surrounds a great love story between Yuval, the narrator, and Yaara.

La simmetria dei desideri è un romanzo ambientato in una strada esplosa troppe volte, ma la penna di Eshkol Nevo è così abile da non farci pesare la bruttezza di un conflitto dalla storia lunghissima, sullo sfondo infatti la Seconda Intifada e una società in cui vivere alquanto difficile. È la vita di quattro ragazzi che hanno desideri normalissimi e vivono con fin troppa consuetudine una città dalla ferita aperta, tale da non farcelo notare. La loro è un’amicizia che supera le difficoltà della vita nonostante le differenze dei loro approcci nell'affrontarle. Il loro legame è un bene prezioso che va coltivato con pazienza e dedizione, ma deve essere reciproco. Il protagonista, lo spirito dell'amicizia, ci insegna che il tempo non conta, anzi accresce con quando le esperienze si fanno comuni. Una lettura che sa di malinconia per le amicizie perse ma che sprona a farsene di nuove, non tralasciando una profonda riflessione su proprio vissuto.
La simmetria dei desideri is a novel set in a street that has exploded too many times but Eshkol Nevo's pen is so skilled that it does not make us weigh the ugliness of a conflict with a very long history, in the background in fact the Second Intifada and a rather difficult society to live in. It’s the life of four young people who have very normal desires and who live too much in a city with an open wound, such as not to let us notice it. Theirs is a friendship that overcomes the difficulties of life despite the differences in their approaches in dealing with them. Their bond is a precious asset that must be cultivated with patience and dedication, but it must be mutual. The protagonist, the spirit of friendship, teaches us that time does not count, indeed it increases with when experiences become common. A reading that smells of melancholy for lost friendships but that spurs you to make new ones, not neglecting a profound reflection on your own experience.
Parlare di amicizia può sembrare così poco originale nel nostro oggi, ma Nevo riesce nel difficile compito di descrivere le diverse personalità di quattro amici senza mai cadere in cliché e senza che vi sia mai nulla di scontato. Ci dimostra che si può stravolgere la propria visione delle cose e poi anche ritornare indietro, senza ipoteche sul futuro.
Un libro delicato e sorprendente sulle relazioni e sulla capacità di mettersi in discussione. Ci insegna che si può toccare il fondo ma poi tentare di risalire. Un libro che altro non è se non un richiamo che conduce l’anima su sentieri profondi, così umani e così puramente semplici, ma che la frenesia del nostro mondo non ci permette, spesso, di farci capire che dietro alla apparente banalità delle cose si cela la chiave di lettura del tutto. “La simmetria dei desideri” narra l'essenza dell'amicizia, quella di cui scrivono i libri, ma che sa essere anche reale, illogica, generosa, arrabbiata, fraterna, dedita.
Talking about friendship may seem so unoriginal in our day, but Nevo succeeds in the difficult task of describing the different personalities of four friends without ever falling into cliché and without ever being taken for granted. It shows us that one can distort one's vision of things and then also go back, without mortgaging on the future.
