Nel romanzo di Nicoletta Verna Il Valore Affettivo (Einaudi) conosciamo Bianca, una donna che ne ha viste tante. Precoce, che è diventata tale troppo presto, a soli sette anni. A quell’età, infatti, assiste all’evento che le scombinerà il baricentro e ogni sua convinzione: la morte di sua sorella Stella. Da quel momento, crescere diventa per Bianca un percorso agognate e costantemente teso fra una lotta persa in partenza: riportare sua sorella nel presente.
Bianca nel frattempo è cresciuta. Si è creata un’immagine di sé che la inserisce perfettamente nel sistema sociale in cui vive. È sbobinatrice di interviste per il settore marketing, compagna ideale di un noto cardiochirurgo, Carlo, che apparentemente venera, ma non come persona, piuttosto come mero strumento per arrivare al suo scopo. In questo romanzo familiare si delineano tutte le sfaccettature dei personaggi, le loro fragilità e la loro interpretazione di una vita ingiusta, cinica, soffocante e senza esclusioni di colpi.
How to react to a catastrophic event, able to undermine one's point of view on the world and all the certainties that were firmly established until its occurrence?
In Nicoletta Verna's novel Il valore affettivo (Einaudi) we meet Bianca, a woman who has seen many. Precocious, who became precocious too soon, only seven years old. At that age, in fact, she witnesses the event that will upset her center of gravity and her every belief in her: the death of her sister Stella. From that moment on, growing up becomes for Bianca a longed-for and constantly tense path between a lost struggle: to bring her sister back to the present.
Bianca has grown up in the meantime. She has created an image of herself that fits her perfectly into the social system in which she lives. She edits interviews for the marketing sector, she is the ideal companion of a well-known heart surgeon, Carlo, whom she apparently venerates, but not as a person, rather as a mere tool to achieve her purpose. In this family novel all the facets of the characters are outlined, their fragility and their interpretation of an unfair, cynical, suffocating and no holds barred life.
La grammatica della Verna, rigorosamente in prima persona, ci obbliga a immedesimarci nei personaggi, vivere la loro stessa frustrazione e ossessione nella ricerca di sé e nel riuscire a definire la propria persona. Il passaggio con cui l’autrice lo racconta è sottile e si basa tutto sul rapporto fra sorelle. Rapporto, questo, per sua natura complicato che si definisce tra la venerazione di chi è più grande e la frustrazione di non esserne mai all’altezza, con la conseguente ricerca incostante di un dialogo, che puntualmente sconta la differenza di età.
Verna's grammar, strictly in the first person, forces us to identify with the characters, to experience their own frustration and obsession in the search for oneself and in being able to define one's own person. The passage with which the author tells it is subtle and is entirely based on the relationship between sisters. This relationship, by its very nature, is complicated and is defined between the veneration of those who are older and the frustration of never being up to it, with the consequent erratic search for a dialogue, which punctually discounts the age difference.
In questa vita ricca di aspettative che regolarmente disattende, Nicoletta Verna inserisce la figura dell’uomo svalutandola e rapportandola a un semplice mezzo che fa da cornice all’esistenza dilaniata della protagonista. Messo lì, apparentemente senza valore.
Nel dilemma esistenziale di Bianca, alimentato dal senso di colpa per la perdita della sorella, vediamo un’anima sfocata, in una ricerca esasperata di senso. Bianca è un fantasma di sé che tende a vivere immersa nel passato, dimenticandosi della generosità del presente nell’offrirle occasioni di redenzione che lei, ormai cieca, non riesce a scorgere.
In this life full of expectations that regularly disregards, Nicoletta Verna inserts the figure of man devaluing it and relating it to a simple means that frames the torn existence of the protagonist. Placed there, apparently worthless.
In Bianca's existential dilemma, fueled by the sense of guilt for the loss of her sister, we see a blurred soul in an exasperated search for meaning. Bianca is a ghost of herself who tends to live immersed in the past, forgetting the generosity of the present in offering her opportunities for redemption that she, now blind, cannot see.
La televisione che racconta del disastro della Concordia, a suggerirci le coordinate temporali in cui si svolge il racconto, e le barbie che nascono con scopo ludico, ma che inevitabilmente instillano nella bambina un’ambizione troppo grande di una finta perfezione che però lascia un’ossessione del tutto reale: sono elementi ricorrenti nel libro. In questo modo l’autrice si svela un po’, suggerendo la sua deformazione professionale come esperta del web marketing.
The television that tells of the Concordia disaster, to suggest the temporal coordinates in which the story takes place, and the barbies that are born with a playful purpose, but which inevitably instill in the child too great an ambition of a fake perfection that however leaves a completely real obsession: they are recurring elements in the book. In this way the author reveals herself a little, suggesting her professional deformation as an expert in web marketing.
Con questo romanzo vengono messe a nudo le devastazioni psicologiche all’interno delle famiglie disfunzionali, evidenziando come quella che dovrebbe essere il primo centro di socialità e la prima forma di scuola per ognuno, sia inevitabilmente un segno indelebile che andrà a condizionare il proprio approccio alla vita; per quanto uno si convinca di poter cancellare tutto e rinascere autonomamente, libero dai retaggi del passato.
Il Valore Affettivo, con la sua analisi dettagliata del tempo, della paura di vivere un futuro tanto doloroso e catastrofico quanto il passato, ottiene la Menzione Speciale della Giuria al Premio Calvino 2020.
With this novel the psychological devastation within dysfunctional families is exposed, highlighting how what should be the first center of sociality and the first form of school for everyone, is inevitably an indelible sign that will affect one's approach to life; however much one is convinced that one can cancel everything and be reborn autonomously, free from the legacies of the past.
Il Valore Affettivo, with its detailed analysis of time, of the fear of living a future as painful and catastrophic as the past, gets the Special Mention of the Jury at the Premio Calvino 2020.
