Una grande passione per la musica (ha partecipato al Festival di Sanremo), molta creatività alle spalle. Durante una faticosa ripresa da un intervento avvenuta durante la prima e difficile quarantena da Covid-19, Celeste Gaia dà vita a SENZAQUADRO. Il progetto dà vita a opere d’arte realizzate con cartoni riciclati provenienti dal packaging dei delivery, su cui, dopo averli dipinti scrive delle meta-frasi, dal significato che si fa significante. In questi giorni è alla Dutch Design Week e da li ci racconta la sua avventura.

A great passion for music (she attended the Sanremo Festival), a lot of creativity behind her. Celeste Gaia From an intervention recovery that took place during the first and difficult quarantine from Covid-19 she gives life to SENZAQUADRO. The project gives life to works of art made with recycled cartons from the delivery packaging, on which, after having painted them, she writes meta-sentences, with a meaning that becomes significant. These days she is at Dutch Design Week and from there she tells us about her adventure.

Celeste, SENZAQUADRO è nato durante la pandemia, come esattamente?

- Durante il lockdown ero in convalescenza (per un’operazione al polmone) e ho trovato un modo per trasformare una delle mie passioni, la pittura, in qualcosa che fosse un progetto legato soprattutto al riutilizzo di materiali di scarto e rifiuti. Per un po’ di mesi ho pensato di non buttare via nulla di quello che ordinavo/compravo online o consumavo. Il risultato è stato un accumulo infinito di packaging food delivery. Ho cercato un modo per creare una tela che avesse in sé anche la cornice, fosse un pezzo unico inscindibile, usando come materia prima tutti i rifiuti legati principalmente a quello che è il mondo dell’imballaggio. Dopo vari studi e sperimentazioni è nato SENZAQUADRO - cornici che parlano. -

Celeste, SENZAQUADRO was born during the pandemic, how exactly?

- During the lockdown I was convalescing (for a lung operation) and I found a way to transform one of my passions, painting, into something that was a project linked above all to the reuse of waste materials and waste. For a few months I thought about not throwing away anything I ordered/bought online or consumed. The result was an endless accumulation of food delivery packaging. I looked for a way to create a canvas that also had the frame in it, was an inseparable single piece, using all the waste mainly related to the world of packaging as a raw material. After various studies and experiments, SENZAQUADRO was born - frames that speak. -

"Delivery", nel frattempo, è diventata una parola comunissima, come ti sei relazionata con la nuova vita che temporaneamente abbiamo passato tutti?

- L’ho vista come un’opportunità per rimescolare le carte, non senza paure ovviamente, ma è stato in realtà un modo per scegliere tra un prima e un dopo. La possibilità di avere tutto on-demand e in minor tempo possibile - in alcune parti del mondo siamo fortunati anche se non sempre ce ne accorgiamo - condiziona ovviamente il nostro rapporto con il consumo. Ragionare sulle materie prime per me è stato il punto di partenza. Buttiamo via tantissimo, a volte l’imballaggio è più ingombrante del prodotto stesso. Volevo diventasse una risorsa. -

"Delivery", meanwhile, has become a very common word, how did you relate to the new life that we have all temporarily spent?

- I saw it as an opportunity to reshuffle the cards, obviously not without fear, but it was actually a way to choose between a before and an after. The possibility of having everything on-demand and in the shortest possible time - in some parts of the world we are lucky even if we don't always notice it - obviously conditions our relationship with consumption. Thinking about raw materials was the starting point for me. We throw away a lot, sometimes the packaging is more bulky than the product itself. I wanted it to become a resource. -

Cosa significa per te SENZAQUADRO?

- È prima di tutto un progetto di design legato ai rifiuti, è un modo per trasformare quello che andrebbe buttato in un complemento d’arredo, portatore di un messaggio consapevole senza per questo sottovalutarne l’estetica. È a tutti gli effetti un ibrido tra un brand e una forma d’espressione artistica, con uno schema compositivo semplice e proprio per questo modulabile. -

What does SENZAQUADRO mean for you?

- It is first of all a design project linked to waste, it is a way to transform what should be thrown away into a piece of furniture, the bearer of a conscious message without underestimating its aesthetics. It is to all intents and purposes a hybrid between a brand and a form of artistic expression, with a simple and modular composition scheme. -

Come scegli i colori? E le parole?

- Il colore di solito è strettamente legato a quello che voglio dire. Sono sempre stata attratta dal potenziale comunicativo intrinseco ad ogni gradazione o nuance di colore, è come se ognuno avesse in se una carica emotiva in grado di trasmettere un concetto. Il processo di creazione in questo senso è come se fosse uno solo, senza separazione: nella testa visualizzo un messaggio e cerco poi il modo migliore per renderlo dal punto di vista visivo, secondo quella che è la mia soggettività. -

How do you choose the colors? And the words?

- Color is usually closely related to what I want to express. I have always been attracted by the intrinsic communicative potential of every gradation or nuance of color, it is as if everyone had an emotional charge in themselves capable of transmitting a concept. The process of creation in this sense is as if it were one, without separation: in my head I visualize a message and then look for the best way to render it from a visual point of view, according to my subjectivity. -

Esiste un filo logico che li lega oppure è tutta una questione emotiva?

- Esiste un processo, non è immediato, richiede sempre tempo e ricerca. A volte posso iniziare con un’idea e lavorandoci si trasforma in altro. La parte legata alla pittura è quella più istintiva perché per me deve focalizzare un momento, uno stato d’animo, che come ogni cosa è in divenire, mentre per le parole serve molto più pensiero. -

Is there a logical thread that binds them or is it all an emotional matter?

- There is a process, it is not immediate, it always requires time and research. Sometimes I can start with an idea and working on it it turns into something else. The part linked to painting is the most instinctive one because for me it has to focus on a moment, a state of mind, which like everything is in the making, while words need much more thought. -

Sei anche cantautrice, la musica è un sottofondo delle tue giornate?

- La musica è da sempre la colonna sonora della mia testa, molte volte è un motore per la scrittura, aiuta a sintetizzare i concetti. Per quanto riguarda l’ascolto, come tutti dipende dal momento, potrei ascoltare una canzone che amo mille volte di seguito e ogni volta trovarci qualcosa di diverso. Credo sia questo il mistero e il bello della musica: il suo fluire senza essere mai uguale. -

You’re also a songwriter, is music a background of your days?

- Music has always been the soundtrack of my head, many times it is an engine for writing, it helps to synthesize concepts. As for listening, like everyone else it depends on the moment, I could listen to a song that I love a thousand times in a row and find something different each time. I think this is the mystery and the beauty of music: its flow without ever being the same. -

Cosa ti auguri diventi il tuo progetto?

- Mi auguro che cresca sempre di più e che diventi un modo di esprimersi anche per altri. Sia dal punto di vista del prodotto, sto facendo studi per sperimentare in futuro anche con altri tipi di rifiuti, sia dal punto di vista del brand. Ho avuto bellissime esperienze con persone che hanno scelto di dire qualcosa d’importante attraverso un SENZAQUADRO (attuando una vera e propria personalizzazione) e per me è stato stupendo poter collaborare in questo senso. -

What do you hope your project becomes?

- I hope that it grows more and more and that it becomes a way of expressing themselves for others as well. Both from the point of view of the product, I am doing studies to experiment in the future with other types of waste, and from the point of view of the brand. I have had wonderful experiences with people who have chosen to say something important through a SENZAQUADRO (implementing a real customization) and for me it was wonderful to be able to collaborate in this sense. -

In effetti dal 16 al 24 ottobre fai parte della mostra ONLY GOOD NEWS alla PENNINGS FOUNDATION, dove presenti due opere per te molto importanti, ce le racconti?

- Sono molto felice di partecipare all Dutch Design Week insieme al distretto di Isola. Porto due pezzi, il numero 73 è della linea Manifesto, contiene circa mezzo kilo di rifiuti e il messaggio “In the present this sound of the world makes horses go wild” esprime il suono del mondo che influenza e contrasta e allo stesso tempo alimenta il nostro marasma interiore che non si può separare dal nostro corpo: è un tutt’uno ed è proprio il continuo mescolarsi d’impulsi differenti (dall’esterno verso l’interno) che porta a creare, mantenendo viva e in movimento ogni forma di espressione artistica. Il SENZAQUADRO numero 74 appartiene alla linea Colore e ha invece come messaggio “Endless” che è per me fortemente positivo: rappresenta il ciclo continuo di rinascita dei rifiuti (la trasformazione in qualcosa di esteticamente migliore) e soprattutto della creatività, che è in grado di auto-alimentarsi in un processo continuo di ricerca e sperimentazione. -

In fact, from 16 to 24 October you are part of the ONLY GOOD NEWS exhibition at the PENNINGS FOUNDATION, where you present two works that are very important to you, can you tell us about them?

- I am very happy to participate in Dutch Design Week together with the Isola district. I bring two pieces, number 73 is from the Manifesto line, contains about half a kilo of waste and the message "In the present this sound of the world makes horses go wild" expresses the sound of the world that influences and contrasts and at the same time feeds the our inner chaos that cannot be separated from our body: it is a whole and it is precisely the continuous mixing of different impulses (from the outside towards the inside) which leads to the creation, keeping alive and in motion every form of artistic expression. The SENZAQUADRO number 74 belongs to the Colore line and instead has an “Endless" message which is highly positive for me: it represents the continuous cycle of rebirth of waste (the transformation into something aesthetically better) and above all of creativity, which is able to self-nourishing in a continuous process of research and experimentation. -
