SKUA: dal cucire scarpe a piedi nudi al creare un brand sostenibile, inclusivo e, diciamolo, cool

La storia della moda è piena di coppie vincenti di stilisti e creativi i quali si danno man forte nel creare collezioni. Anche in epoca contemporanea è così. Una di queste realtà è SKUA Studio, progetto di scarpe dal gusto unico e dalla manifattura squisita, fondato in quel di Utrecht dal duo Anousjka Röben e Naomi Hille. Le donne si sono incontrate durante il loro percorso di studi, capendo ben presto quali fossero le loro affinità, riassumibili in: artigianalità, sostenibilità, bellezza e inclusività. A proposito di quest’ultima, le loro creazioni sono disponibili in tutte le taglie, per ognuno di noi. Tra una risata e l’altra, senza svelare troppo i loro segreti di produzione, perché non si sa mai che le spie del concetto di fast fashion fossero in ascolto, ci raccontano la loro storia recente.

The history of fashion is full of winning pairs of designers and creatives who brings courage to themself in creating collections. This is also the case in the contemporary era. One of these realities is SKUA Studio, a shoe project with a unique taste and exquisite manufacturing, founded in Utrecht by the duo Anousjka Röben and Naomi Hille. The women met during their studies, quickly understanding their affinities, which can be summarized in: craftsmanship, sustainability, beauty and inclusiveness. Speaking of the latter, their creations are available in all sizes, for everybody. Between one laugh and another, without revealing their production secrets too much, because who knows if the fast fashion spies are around, they tell us their recent story.

Naomi, Anousjka vi siete conosciute all’università, vero? Qual è stata la vostra prima impressione l'una dell'altra?

- Anousjka: Che fosse strana ma simpatica (ride,ndr). -

- Naomi: All’università ci hanno insegnato che non si poteva cucire vestite scomode, con i tacci, mentre noi il primo giorni li indossavamo entrambi. Così, di lì a breve, abbiamo iniziato a cucire scalze. È stato un bell’incontro. -

- Anousjka: Non ci conoscevamo prima, ma poi abbiamo condiviso momenti bellissimi, anche imbarazzanti insieme all’università, rompendo così il ghiaccio e iniziando a parlare. -

- Naomi: Inoltre eravamo entrambe così schiette nel linguaggio delle forme (delle scarpe) e nei colori brillanti che usavamo che eravamo molto interessati ai lavori l’una dell'altra. Abbiamo iniziato ad aiutarci a vicenda e ha funzionato sin dall'inizio. È folle, ma la pensiamo allo stesso modo. -

Naomi, Anousjka you met at university, right? What was your first impression of each other?

- Anousjka: Weird but nice (she laughs, ed). -

- Naomi: We were told to not stitch with out platform shoes on and the both of us were wearing them so one of the first days in school the both of us were stitching barefoot. -

- Anousjka: We didn't really know each other yet, but all the time we were sharing awkward moments together in school so at one point we just had to break the ice and start talking. -

- Naomi: Plus we were both so outspoken in the shape language and bright colors we used that we were very interested in each others works. We started helping eachother out and it just clicked from the start. It's insane but we really think in the same way. -

SKUA Studio

Poi avete collaborato per alcune sfilate ma è stato solo nel 2019 che è nato SKUA Studio. Con quali obiettivi?

- Anousjka: Per l’università dovevamo realizzare una scarpa sportiva per una mostra di sneaker alla Dutch Design Week ospitata da Dutch Leather e dallo Shoe Museum, abbiamo deciso che volevamo lavorare insieme al progetto e realizzare una mini collezione dato che lo avevamo molte idee che si sono unite a vicenda. -

- Naomi: Sì, e lì SKUA Studio è nato con l'idea che tutto fosse fatto a mano, nel nostro atelier. A quel tempo stavamo entrambe studiando, ma abbiamo deciso di lasciare il nostro lavoro nei bar in cui lavoravamo e ci siamo semplicemente prese il rischio di tuffarci nell'artigianato della produzione di scarpe, totalmente ignare su come o cosa sarebbe successo. -

- Anousjka: Era tutto o niente, ma l'amore per il mestiere ci ha dato il potere di far accadere qualcosa. -

- Naomi: Questo è anche ciò che ci muove ogni giorno, ci siamo sentite come se dovessimo fare la nostra parte nel mantenere vivo il mestiere ma lo mescoliamo con tecniche moderne. Riteniamo inoltre che la durata e la produzione locale siano molto importanti a cui pensare, mentre fuori vive la pazza società "veloce". -

Then you collaborate for some fashion shows but it was only in 2019 the SKUA Studio was born. With what purposes?

- Anousjka: For school we were supposed to make a sneaker for a sneaker exhibition at the Dutch Design Week hosted by the Dutch leather and the Shoe Museum, we decided we wanted to work together on the project and make a mini collection since we had so many ideas that complimented each other. -

- Naomi: Yeah, and there SKUA Studio was born with the idea that everything was made by hand locally in our own atelier. At that time we were both studying but decided to give up our job at the bars we both worked in and we just took the risk of diving into the craftmanship of shoemaking a full 100 percent without knowing how or what was going to happen. -

- Anousjka: It was all or nothing, but the love for the craft gave us the power to make something happen. -

- Naomi: This is also what drives us, we felt like we had to do our part in keeping the craft alive but we mix it with modern techniques. We also feel like durability and local production is very important to think about in this crazy “fastpaced" society. -

Sono sempre gli stessi?

- Naomi: Di ​​sicuro! Manteniamo le ambizioni e gli obiettivi molto vicini ai nostri cuori, è un aspetto che prendiamo molto sul serio. Manteniamo l'intero processo nel nostro atelier, dalla progettazione alla lavorazione dei tacchi e al rivestimento fino al processo di imballaggio. Questa è la nostra storia. -

- Anousjka: Certamente diventa sempre più difficile ogni volta che cresciamo un po' di più, ma troviamo soluzioni per mantenere l'intero processo nelle nostre mani. La vediamo solo come una bella sfida e va bene così, ci piace. -

Are they still the same?

- Naomi: For sure! We keep the ambitions ands goals very close to our harts, this is something we take very seriously. We keep the whole process in our own atelier from design to pooring the heels and coating them to the process of packing. This is part of the whole story for us. -

- Anousjka: It is getting more difficult everytime we grow a bit more, but we make up solutions to keep the whole process in our own hands. We just see it as a nice challenge and we love ourselves a good challenge. -

Le vostre scarpe stanno diventando piuttosto celebri, soprattutto per via del tacco. Come concepite questo particolare dettaglio della scarpa?

- Anousjka: Facciamo tutto il possibile per proteggere le nostre forme distintive, quindi preferiamo non raccontare questi aspetti. -

- Naomi: Più che altro perché siamo molto consapevoli che al momento esiste un'industria della moda fast in cui molto viene copiato solo per rendere il prodotto più economico e veloce. -

Your shoes are becoming well known, especially because of the heel. How do you conceive this particular shoe detail?

- Anousjka: We do everything we can to protect our signature shapes. -

- Naomi: We are very much aware that there is a fast fashion industry at the moment where a lot is being copied just to make the product cheaper and faster. -

Come e per chi nasce una scarpa SKUA?

- Naomi: Per tutt* coloro che vogliono far parte della storia di SKUA! Creiamo scarpe di ogni taglia. Quindi, per chiunque ami i tacchi non ci siamo, non abbiate paura. -

- Anousjka: Le scarpe sono lì per le persone che hanno il coraggio di vivere e correre dei rischi proprio come abbiamo fatto noi nel momento in cui abbiamo rinunciato a tutto per tuffarci in questo mestiere. -

- Naomi: Anche la nostra collezione si basa su personaggi forti e ogni modello di scarpa ha una musa diversa. Per esempio, la Valentina Vanguard si basa sulla prima donna che è andata nello spazio: Valentina Teresjkova. -

How and for whom is a SKUA shoe born?

- Naomi: For everyone who wants to be part of the SKUA story. We create shoes in every size so everyone who wants to walk in heels, please be you, don't hold back! -

- Anousjka: The shoes are there for the people that dare to just go and take risks just like we did the moment we gave up everything to dive into this craft. -

- Naomi: Our collection is also based upon strong characters like this and every shoe model has a different muse. For instance, the Valentina Vanguard is based upon the first woman that went to space: Valentina Teresjkova. -

Quali sono i vostri riferimenti creativi?

- Naomi: Se stai parlando della nostra ispirazione, allora possiamo solo dirti che viene da tutto ciò che ci circonda. Siamo letteralmente in contatto ogni giorno e quando non siamo insieme ci scambiamo foto di architetture, persone che amiamo, prodotti che ci piacciono. -

- Anousjka: È sempre un processo molto intuitivo e riguarda anche l’ambiente in cui ci troviamo.-

- Naomi: A volte è anche un “errore” a spingerci a sperimentare nuove shilouette o tecniche, magari apprese, quest’ultime, facendo una collaborazione. Anche il pellame può dirci cosa dobbiamo farne di esso. -

- Anousjka: È divertente, spesso capiamo già prima le tendenze moda che arriveranno, a volte le accogliamo ma accade molto più spesso di rimanere nella nostra piccola bolla e creare qualcosa che vogliamo indossare noi stesse e che sia senza tempo. -

What are your creative references?

- Naomi: If you're talking about where our inspiration is coming from then we can only tell you that it's coming from all around us. We are literally in contact all day and when we are not together we send each other pictures of architecture, people we love, products we like. -

- Anousjka: It is always a very intuitive process and also a lot about ambiance.-

- Naomi: Sometimes it's a happy accident from the last time we made a shoe or a new technique we learned from doing a collaboration or a piece of leather that tells us what we need to do with it. -

- Anousjka: It's funny that we often feel what is coming in fashion, but we also choose most of the times to just stay in our little bubble and make something we want to wear ourselves and something timeless. -

SKUA Studio

Ovviamente non è facile fondare un marchio di moda, che difficoltà avete incontrato?

- Naomi: Per iniziare con un marchio di scarpe in particolare hai bisogno di molte attrezzature e macchinari. -

- Anousjka: Ad esempio per fare una scarpa hai già bisogno di circa cinque macchine diverse e, da non sottovalutare, un grande atelier con spazio per mettere tutte queste macchine. -

- Naomi: Sì, quindi se vuoi iniziare a fare scarpe da te devi investire molto. -

- Anousjka: Inoltre siamo entrambe designer e creatrici, ma tutto l’aspetto del marketing... pazzesco, è un'altra cosa (ride, ndr). -

- Naomi: Sì, puoi dire che non è la nostra abilità più forte, ma da un mese siamo partner di una società di pubbliche relazioni a Parigi chiamata L'appart PR. -

Obviously it is not easy to found a fashion brand, what difficulties did you encounter?

- Naomi: To start with a shoe brand specifically you need a lot of equipment and machinery. -

- Anousjka: For example to make a shoe you already need about five different machines and do not forget about a big atelier with space to put all this machines in. -

- Naomi: Yeah so if you want to start making shoes yourself you need to invest a lot. -

- Anousjka: Also we are both designers and makers but the whole marketing… “mannnn" that is something else (she laughs, ed). -

- Naomi: Yeah, you can say it is not our strongest skill, but since a month we are now partnered up with a PR company in Paris called L'appart PR. -

Entrambe definite SKUA un marchio con un approccio sostenibile. Dove troviamo questo concetto nelle tue scarpe?

- Naomi: È proprio nella produzione locale, nel fare tutto a mano e nella durabilità della pelle che usiamo. Ci assicuriamo che le scarpe siano realizzate con pelle di qualità proveniente dall'Europa. -

- Anousjka: Cerchiamo sempre materiali sostenibili, ma per le scarpe non c'è molto che possa competere con la vera pelle, poiché si tratta principalmente di prodotti super chimici che non durano mai a lungo. -

You both define SKUA a brand with a sustainable approach. Where do we find this concept in your shoes?

- Naomi: It is really in the local production, doing everything by hand and the durability of the leather we use. We make sure the shoes are made from quality leather that comes from Europe. -

- Anousjka: We always look for sustainable materials but for shoes there is not much that can compete with real leather since it is mostly super chemical products that will not last long. -

Fate anche molti collaborazioni. Una, ad esempio, è stata con la stilista Florentina Leitner. Ne avete altre in programma?

- Anousjka: Abbiamo lavorato con Marc Martha per la sua collezione Master ad Anversa e al momento siamo impegnati a realizzare una piccola produzione insieme. -

You also make a lot of collaboration. One, for example, was with fashion designer Florentina Leitner. Do you have any more planned?

- Anousjka: We worked with Marc Martha for his Master collection in Antwerp and we are busy at the moment to make a little production together. -

La moda è?

- Naomi: Esprimere se stessi nel modo in cui si desidera. È un'estensione della tua persona. -

- Anousjka: la moda è uno specchio della società e a volte anche preoccupante. -

- Naomi: Sta anche danneggiando il mondo in molti modi. -

- Naomi: Con questo in mente cerchiamo di creare un po' di consapevolezza per il modo in cui sono fatte le scarpe e continuiamo a perseguire i nostri sogni e le nostre passioni. -

Fashion is?

- Naomi: Expressing yourself the way you want an extension of your persona. -

- Anousjka: fashion is a mirror of society and also troubling sometimes as well. -

- Naomi: It’s also harming the world in many ways. -

- Anousjka: We try to reduce our footprint in the industry by being concious with the materials we use and the way we work at the same time we also set the bar high to keep on creating the things we love the most. -

- Naomi: With this in mind we try to create some awareness for the way shoes are made and keep on pursuing our dreams and passions. -
