Under Milano
Se Sant’Elia concepisce La Città che Sale nei primi anni del Novecento, ora, a essere studiata, indagata e sperimentata è l’urbe che si cela sotto l’asfalto, e che si traduce con il nome di metropolitana. O UNDER Milano, il progetto fotografico curato da Tiziano Demuro e Sergio Raffaele. I due professionisti raccontano discretamente e con un’estetica puntuale i frequentatori delle linee verde, gialla, rossa e lilla. Un bacio, un occhio stanco, una scarpa particolare o un libro interessante vengono rappresentati nei loro scatti e raccontati per noi.
If Sant’Elia conceives La Città che Sale in the early twentieth century, now, to be studied, investigated and experimented is the city which is hidden under the asphalt, and which translates to the name of the underground. Or UNDER Milano, the photographic project curated by Tiziano Demuro and Sergio Raffaele. The two professionals discreetly tell the visitors of the green, yellow, red and lilac lines with a precise aesthetic. A kiss, a tired eye, a particular shoe or an interesting book are represented in their shots and told for us.

Sergio, Tiziano, intanto raccontate come vi siete incontrati e quando, nel vostro percorso, è nata l'idea di UNDER Milano?
- Ci siamo conosciuti un paio di di anni fa in Accademia di Belle arti di Brera, entrambi frequentavamo un corso di laurea Magistrale in fotografia e condividevamo il desiderio di lavorare a un progetto collettivo. L'ambiente metropolitano ci ha sempre attratto e avevamo già iniziato a esplorarlo autonomamente. Quando abbiamo scoperto questo interesse comune, in maniera piuttosto spontanea, è nato UNDER Milano. -
Sergio, Tiziano, tell us how you met and when, on your journey, the idea of UNDER Milano was born?
- We met a couple of years ago in the Accademia di Belle arti di Brera, we both attended a master's degree course in photography and shared the desire to work on a collective project. The metropolitan environment has always attracted us and we had already begun to explore it independently. When we discovered this common interest, rather spontaneously, UNDER Milano was born. -

Entrambi usate la metropolitana per spostarvi in città, quindi conoscete bene i frequentatori come voi di questo mezzo pubblico. Secondo voi ci sono dei punti in comune tra i pendolari o la città è così eterogenea che è difficile tracciare un filo rosso?
- Ogni giorno la metropolitana milanese è utilizzata da più di un milione di passeggeri che si spostano da un punto all'altro della città. Non dimentichiamo mai che fotografiamo persone reali e ci piace agire nel rispetto più totale della loro persona, entrare nel loro mondo in punta di piedi, cogliendo attimi di quotidianità che danno la suggestione di storie intime e personali. In questo viaggio ogni passeggero porta con se le proprie preoccupazioni, gioie, dispiaceri, legami. Il nostro interesse è quello di creare un racconto emozionale, a volte astratto, ma interpretabile da ognuno di noi tramite il proprio vissuto, non una fredda documentazione antropologica del sottosuolo milanese. Vogliamo rileggere quello che ci circonda, con un focus su dettagli semplici e cercando di trasporre in un'immagine le atmosfere e le sensazioni che sentiamo. Mani, oggetti, spazi, particolari di persone o i loro atteggiamenti, entrano a far parte dell'immaginario personale che UNDER Milano vuole creare perché divenga un nuovo immaginario collettivo. -
You both use the subway to get around the city, so you know well people like you in this public transport. Do you think there are common points between commuters or is the city so heterogeneous that it is difficult to draw a red thread?
- Every day the Milan metro is used by more than a million passengers who move from one point to another in the city. We never forget that we photograph real people and we like to act in total respect for their person, to enter their world on tiptoe, taking moments of everyday life that give the suggestion of intimate and personal stories. In this journey, each passenger brings with them their worries, joys, sorrows, ties. Our interest is to create an emotional story, sometimes abstract, but interpretable by each of us through his own experience, not a cold anthropological documentation of the Milanese subsoil. We want to reread what surrounds us, with a focus on simple details and trying to transpose the atmospheres and sensations we feel into an image. Hands, objects, spaces, details of people or their attitudes, become part of the personal imagination that UNDER Milano wants to create so that it becomes a new collective imagination. -

La metro è un mezzo veloce. C'è chi sale per una fermata e chi, invece, va da un capo all'altro della linea. Come riuscite a cogliere l'attimo?
- La concezione bressoniana del cogliere l'attimo, inteso come momento decisivo, non ci appartiene. La situazione eccitante o la persona anomala non sono chiavi di ricerca che ci siamo dati. Siamo dell'idea che ogni attimo, ogni dettaglio, anche e sopratutto quelli che sembrano più banali sono quelli quelli che vanno colti e hanno in sé quelle suggestioni che cerchiamo per il nostro racconto. Sta al fotografo trovare la chiave giusta per renderli importanti. Detto questo, durante i nostri spostamenti in metro abbiamo sempre con noi le nostre macchine fotografiche e siamo sempre pronti a scattare per raccontare quello che colpisce la nostra attenzione. -
The metro is a fast way. There are those who go up for a stop and those who go from one end of the line to the other. How do you manage to seize the moment?
- The Bressonian conception of seizing the moment, understood as a decisive moment, does not belong to us. The exciting situation or the abnormal person are not the research keys we have given ourselves. We are of the opinion that every moment, every detail, even and especially those that seem more trivial are those that must be caught and have within them the suggestions that we seek for our story. It is up to the photographer to find the right key to make them important. Having said that, during our journeys we always have our cameras with us and we are always ready to shoot to tell what strikes our attention. -

Scattate assieme?
- Capita di scattare assieme ma per lo più fotografiamo nei nostri spostamenti quotidiani per raggiungere il luogo di lavoro, un aperitivo con gli amici, semplici commissioni. I nostri scatti nascono vivendo la metropolitana come parte di quel milione e mezzo di vite che ogni giorno l'attraversa. -
Do you shoot together?
- It happens to shoot together but mostly we photograph in our daily trips to reach the workplace, an aperitif with friends, simple errands. Our shots come from living the subway as part of that million and a half lives that pass through it every day. -
Con quale criterio selezionate le immagini da inserire sul vostro account di Instagram?
- Postiamo su Instagram una foto al giorno. Instagram è il nostro diario quotidiano, non programmiamo troppo i nostri post ma la scelta è spesso emotiva. La nostra forza è aver ben chiaro cosa vogliamo raccontare e come lo vogliamo fare. Difficilmente, anche le persone che ci conoscono, riescono a capire chi ha scattato una foto. E quando provano a indovinare, sbagliano sempre. Questo ci diverte e ci fa piacere perché abbiamo dato al progetto un stile ben definito. -
With what criteria do you select the images to be added to your Instagram account?
- We post on Instagram a photo a day. Instagram is our daily diary, we don't program our posts too much but the choice is often emotional. Our strength is to be clear what we want to tell and how we want to do it. Hardly even the people who know us can understand who took a photo. And when they try to guess, they always make mistakes. This amuses us and pleases us because we have given the project a well-defined style. -

C'è un episodio particolare a cui avete assistito e che avete immortalato?
- Sono tanti gli episodi che hanno colpito la nostra attenzione, come accennavamo, a volte ordinari ma ai nostri occhi carichi di suggestione. Ci siamo trovati di fronte ad atteggiamenti buffi e li abbiamo raccontati con dei video sulle stories Instagram. È un aspetto che ci diverte. -
Is there a particular episode that you have witnessed and that you have immortalized?
- There are many episodes that have caught our attention, as we mentioned, sometimes ordinary but in our eyes full of suggestion. We found ourselves faced with funny attitudes and we told them with videos on Instagram stories. It is an aspect that amuses us. -
Al momento UNDER Milano è una pagina su un social con tanto potenziale, magari per una mostra. Voi cosa prevedete per il suo futuro?
- UNDER Milano si sta facendo conoscere su Instagram ma è stato concepito come un progetto editoriale. Ci siamo dati due anni per esplorare e raccontare la metropolitana milanese e il prossimo passo sarà quello di concretizzare il progetto in un libro. Scattiamo in questa ottica e man mano stiamo lavorando su un editing ben preciso. -
At the moment UNDER Milano is a page on a social network with a lot of potential, perhaps for an exhibition. What do you foresee for its future?
- UNDER Milano is making itself known on Instagram but it was conceived as an editorial project. We took two years to explore and tell the Milan underground and the next step will be to make the project concrete in a book. We take this perspective and gradually we are working on a very precise editing. -
