Secondo Ernest Hemingway non si deve mai andare in vacanza con qualcuno che non si ama. E allora viaggiamo da soli, se proprio non si ha qualcuno d'amare. Prendiamo la macchina, il treno, l'aereo o qualsiasi altro mezzo e partiamo. C'è anche chi dice che non importa la meta, ma il tragitto per arrivarci. Vero, ma vi è una grande differenza tra giungere, ad esempio, in un paese con una cultura simile alla nostra, ovvero quella occidentale, e uno, invece, che è diametralmente opposto per usi e costumi. Le religioni, le tradizioni, il paesaggio sono tra i fattori più in grado di tutti a definire un luogo. E di conseguenza anche un percorso, turistico o meno.

I fotografi sono gli artisti che sicuramente riescono a fare un ritratto di una nazione con un solo scatto. Che rappresentino paesaggi privi di passaggio umano oppure donne, uomini o bambini, sono forse gli unici a catturare la vera essenza di un paese. E per compiere questo prodigio devono per forza viaggiare. Dal fotografo brasiliano Sebastião Salgado - celebri sono i suoi reportage sulle migrazioni umane, contenuti nei volumi In Cammino e Ritratti di bambini in cammino (Contrasto editore) - fino a Franco Fontana, il quale con il suo intuito cromatico e la capacità di insinuarsi in angoli del mondo (soprattutto dell'Italia) riesce a rendere pittoriche delle fotografie magistrali. Dunque la fotografia non è solo un mezzo per raccontare ma anche per far sognare, specialmente coloro che non possono viaggiare realmente, ma solo attraverso le immagini.

And to perform this prodigy they must travel. From the brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado - his reportages on human migration, contained in the volumes In Cammino and Ritratti di bambini in cammino (Contrasto editore) - are famous, up to Franco Fontana, who with his chromatic intuition and the ability to insinuate himself in corners the world (especially Italy) manages to make pictorial masterful pictures. In passato pochi hanno i mezzi per spostarsi: viaggiare costa. Sono i privilegiati a potersi permettere navi da crociera e treni da mille e una notte. Ma senza arrivare all'autostop, basta noleggiare una macchina, imparare bene le strade e via, verso la destinazione del giorno, la quale può essere la propria casa. Il luogo delle origini. Marianna Quartuccio è una fotografa che vive a Milano da anni ormai. Da qualche settimana è tornata nella sua terra, a Torre Annunziata, in provincia di Napoli. Con la sua macchina fotografica inizia un reportage (ancora work in progress) sui pescherecci del porto e i suoi protagonisti: i pescatori.

Gianni Berengo Gardin non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni. Il fotografo per eccellenza del bianco e nero è maestro assoluto nel far viaggiare e nel farlo lui stesso. Con la sua macchina fotografica è capace di immortalare luoghi, situazioni e persone da più di 60 anni. Nonostante la sua origine ligure è Venezia la città che lo accoglie e lui ricambia dando di lei le immagini più belle della storia. Molti esploratori, del Novecento e dei Duemila, esplorano con occhi diversi la Serenissima dopo essersi imbattuti nei suoi scatti.
